That is where the expanded convention center will be. If built, that blank wall will disappear.

At least it is a good design except for the pool location. I'd think it will get a bit to much shade from the Four Seasons Residences building. Maybe ok during prime summer days but I wonder about spring and fall with the lower angle sun causing to much shade. I would have wanted the pool out on the edge of San Jacinto not Cesar Chavez. Lets hope they ran some sun angle models and got it right.

I find it interesting how different parts of downtown have such different purposes but the development is going strong in each sector. In other words, lots of hotels on the eastern end, offices in the middle, and condos on the west side. Kinda cool. Should give each sector it's own little culture.

With the various entertainment districts at the boundary lines between the different "sectors"

From the 05/22 Design Commission meeting:

Residents of the Four Seasons condos across the street are fighting this project, and the Design Commission postponed any discussion about the FAR increase needed to move this project forward until a future meeting. The Marriott Rep was not happy.

Well, if you live downtown, there is a good chance that your views are not going to be protected forever. What can four seasons really do about this project moving forward besides throw a fit and slow things down. I wish I had one of those huge balconies on the four seasons.

They can't do anything. Also. When I bought my condo, they made sure to tell me up front that the views weren't protected. (Not that I didn't know that already) I may even have signed something confirming that I knew that was the case. I don't remember.

At any rate, what a bunch of a-holes these people are for throwing a fit. They knew better (or were willfully ignorant) when they bought their units. The developers could have made the building's tower cover the entire site from east to west. But they didn't.

This. I think a major question is if the design changes if the convention center is not expanded or if they decide to expand south or east. That might mean that entire north wall will lose windows since it will face the rest of the block which could have future development that would run to the top of the current proposal. That's why the Westin and Aloft Hotel have those awful sides. I don't think the Hideout has been renovated enough to lose its designation of a historical preserved building but I guess you never know. They have to inspect the old Pita Pit or Wholly Cow burger (whichever it was) to make sure that it was no longer eligible for the historical preservation program. I love the Hideout but it would be kind of nice to see another building go up to block that blank Aloft loft. Maybe another part of that block could get a high-rise and accomplish the same thing.

I really hope we have an answer to the convention center soon and the western expansion proposal passes. That would be a really cool block and help so much with the Austin economy. We would just lose a lot of nice restaurants. I'm sure PF Changs, Flemings and Fogo would find a new home but it might be the end for the Vince Young Steakhouse. I think the bottom floor of the convention center will have space for restaurants but I could be wrong about that.

There are proposals to expand the convention center south and east as well as the preferred western option.

Back on June 5th the Design Commission voted 6-3 in favor of the density bonus (F.A.R. increase). So the concerns of some Four Season's residents only ended up causing a about a two week delay.
