Absolutely! That is a game-changer for sure, especially with the other vacant lot down Pender (just east of Main) about to be built on. Very cool.

With the retail east of Main seemingly doing fairly in the area well I think that those units should help with bringing some more variety to the area.

I'm truly impressed by the amount of development going on in Chinatown. The City's land use policy review and upzoning of Chinatown has had the desired effect of spurring sympathetic new development in the area.

Totally agree, this is huge step forward for Chinatown. This has potential to not only build and uplift Chinatown but also spur development/clean-up of the rest of the DES as downtown development would likely continue East.

Honestly, it looks like Chinatown is following it's country namesake with all of the new construction/towers, lol. If you've been to China recently, you might agree there's similarities.

This is the sort of scale that should be built along Cambie, especially around stations.

Went to the pre-rezoning open house for 105 Keefer this evening, looks really good, public appears supportive as well. A shame there will be 50' of frontage left between them and the Keefer Bar. But I understand that property has just changed hands and probably won't remain as parking for long either.

To be honest I think it s good that they weren't able to tie up that piece. I think a 50 foot lot in Chinatown fits the character of the neighbourhood. Something cool will be built there eventually. Its a great little spot.

I noticed that there is some construction activity on the vacant 25' parcel on the other side of the Keefer. Does anyone know what is planned for there? is it another "Flats" type building. I remember seeing a proposal for another one, I just can remember if that is the location.

Anyone know who owns that corner parking lot at Keefer/Columbia? Interesting to see if that will get redeveloped in the near future.

The City of Vancouver is proposing to spend $400,000 to give Chinatown’s 336 iconic “dragon fixture” streetlights a new coat of paint and upgrade the bulbs to LED technology.
Vancouver Chinatown Merchants Association director Henry Tom said on Thursday the lights were installed about 30 years ago and are badly weathered.
“When we first installed them they were lights — the existing street lights were inadequate — nowadays it’s become one of the city’s inviting signs for the area,” he said.
VCMA is expected to chip in $200,000 additionally for the refurbishments. Tom said LED technology would also allow the lights to change colour during special events.
“And it’ll be much more energy efficient than the old ones,” he said.
Tom said the VCMA will need to fundraise and seek sponsors to cover their share of the costs — the association shut down its annual night market earlier this year due to financial difficulties.

He said a next phase may be to build more of the iconic, dragon-topped lights, as Chinatown has grown its borders over the decades.

Hooray. The light fixtures have definitely been showing their age since I moved into the neighbourhood. Hopefully the refurb isn't as disappointing as the Granville St. tubes, the RGB potential should help.

The lighting upgrades at Main and Hastings have already made a significant improvement to the area.

Looks like they're still demolishing the underground parkade (?) probably won't see foundation work for a few more weeks.
