That bridge completely changes the two neighborhoods and the connection between Brooklyn and Queens. I wonder if it shouldn't be built a straight vehicular bridge connecting west and 2nd sts, though. It could be done with good pedestrian and biking amenities, and be a lift or rotating bridge to keep access to the channel.

It's too close to the waterfront to be a vehicular bridge (the city is trying to move away from that) and would disrupt the parkland.

I went by this site yesterday and I can say that the first two towers of Hunters Point (sites A and B in the map below) are above ground!

Forgive the quality of the images...they were taken with an Android phone:

Looking north along Second Ave, from the edge of the LIRR railyards. The building on the left is the LIRR ventilation building...this will be the future location of Building C. Next is the dark blue-grey elementary school. Right in front of the elementary school you can see a backhoe and a crane base for building B. This building will rise to 32 stories and is already at ground level. Then beyond that you can see the crane for building A, which is already above ground and will rise to 38 stories.

The work on building B:

Sorry if this is off topic, but are there any renderings of both Hunter's Point South developments and the LIC developments in one shot. I mean, i've seen renderings for each one, but separately. LOL. Am I making any sense?

Last week, they opened the new park.

The buildings are already about 4 stories high.

Here you can see the completed school, and next to it the residential building in site A which is already 4 stories high.

wow- this is much quicker progress than expected- the park looks great! Last time I was there it was dirt, concrete shards and weeds, less than a year.

Hot implies exciting. Newly developed areas of LIC is anything but exciting.

That is a fantastic looking park, with excellent views of manhattan. I do agree this will become a drawing card for this neighbourhood.

antinimby, when was the last time (if ever) you walked the stretch of Vernon Blvd through Hunters Point? It's brimming with great bars and restaurants.

Yes, Vernon Blvd is lined with bars and pretty underrated. I don't really get why people bash LIC. Yes, Court Square is desolate, but other areas are quite vibrant.

You are absolutely correct and Court Square will be quite different (vibrant) in a couple of years as well. Since Queens West's inception, the Empire State Development Corp has done a wonderful job laying out these parks that continue with Hunters Point South. They are a true asset to this part of Queens and the city as a whole. I hope that the waterfront further up in LIC/Astoria will get the same attention in the future.

I know all that. Read my above post again. The older parts with the stores and restaurants are vibrant but the newer areas are as sterile/dead as can be.

It just goes to show how they still don't know how to create vibrancy. They know how to kill it but not create it.

First of all, you really need buildings with small footprints not these huge blockbusting towers that are cold and uninviting to street life. Even their attempts at putting retail on the ground floors fails to achieve any kind of charm/vibrancy.
