I would think proximity to the US market would come into play - i.e. if Sobey's Canada Safeway did anything to devalue the Safeway name or differentiate Canada Safeway that has impact on the US stores.

The Safeway opens tomorrow - Friday. Got a flyer in the mail today.. looks like they're going pretty high end and will be offering a large amount of local products.

Guess it was too far along to be branded into one of the Sobey's banners such as Thrifty Foods. The Sobey's purchase of Safeway was finalized on Nov 6th so I wonder if the Safeway brand will be short-lived at this location.

Sobey's has yet to state what it intends to do with the Safeway brand, however.

The opening is tomorrow (Friday the 13th). I will be working at this location.

A big welcome to everyone who will be coming!

Checked it out on Tuesday and it was pretty quiet. Nice and new inside, well stocked (because not many have been shopping there?). They're trying really hard to figure out the whole Asian market thing, but are doing a pretty poor job, IMO. There are some semi-decent offerings, but PriceSmart still has them outdone on that front with their Grandview Hwy and Richmond stores.

Its tempting to imagine one of the West side Vancouver Safeways being sold given the price of land. I doubt the Broadway safeways will go since they are perfectly located for development in conjunction with the UBC subway (Commercial, Cambie, Arbutus, Macdonald, and Sasamat) The one at Oak and King Edward is another development opportunity, but doesnt have a lot of competition there. The City Square Safeway despite the location may be feeling the sqeeze from Save on Food, Whole Foods, generally and from London Drugs (pharmacy) and kims (produce).

I would see this new Safeway is a good asset without a lot of local competition regardless of the sign being Safeway or Sobeys.

A lot of the existing sites are or will be redeveloped as the existing stores are dated and the land grossly under utilized.

Sites like: Kits on 4th, Arbutus or Point Grey on 10th could easily be re-branded without any confusion or downside. Vancouverites seem to love "new" names even if it's just for the sake of change and nothing else.

So they built this entire development around a 1-storey bank building on the corner??

its a drive thru bank, there is no way the bank could open a drive thru since they are banned in the city, too valuable to give up for them i imagine

I doubt very much if Sobey's will keep the Safeway brand around, it's a US company and that would likely involve complex licensing agreements on everything from branding to store image. Sobey's has many banners and will likely re-brand the single-branded Safeways into a variety of formats and brands from Sobey's to Thrifty's to Freshco, much the way Loblaws does with Superstore, No-Frills, Loblaws and Independent here in metro Vancouver.

Sobey's will likely use this purchase to build brand-awareness quickly at the expense of the Safeway brand.

Gone are the days of just a couple of brands in the west and consumers seem to have little problem adopting new brands and banners in recent years. I think many urban shoppers see Safeway as one of the least innovative brands around with many stores in desperate need of renovations and updates.

WQRT the Competition Bureau, it was announced that the only local stores affected were the Thrifty's in Sapperton and Tswwassen (both Sobey's banners), both of which are closing.

Safeway's real estate arm seemed to be very keen on redevelopment (i.e. Davie St., Robson St., this project) - do we know if Sobey's takes that view as well?

I really like the wood-like appearance of the protruding boxes along with the black accents. I can't say whether I'll like it in 10 years time, but I wouldn't have thought what's commonly inside condos or on detached homes would look pleasing on a tower.
