Plenty of blame to go around, including the CFR itself. Note that the cities who've tried to pry it from Edmonton in the past (Calgary, Vancouver, Saskatoon) didn't bid on it this time.

Again I’m sure those respective cities ran the numbers and determined it wasn’t advantageous to host the CFR.

Filling in this week in November with other events obviously had a better financial upswing. I can only surmise by the outcome!

Maybe also killing a viable facility with plenty of logistical space wasn't a great idea after all...

Just like all the companies and events that have vacated Edmonton over the last fifty years they must feel relief to get away from all the political mess that is Edmonton.

I know a few people that would head to Edmonton for the CFR. We used to have cattle at FarmFair every year for a bit.

But now that it's in Red Deer, I have way more friends and family going to it. And the CFR leads into Agri-Trade week here. Huge amounts of rodeo fans and farmers and ranchers from all over.

As an Uber driver here in RD, I say hell yah! Bring it on! The first year went pretty well.

A late post. Red Deer is big enough now to host large events successfully with the population now over 100,000 and several cities and towns in close proximity. It’s the centre of a very rich farming and ranching region for sure.

Will the announcement of the PBR finals replace CFR?

Curious to see how PBR does this time around given entry requirements.

It's back! Interesting choice by Mayor Sohi to not wear jeans nor a hat at the presser.

Cold is right, it's all about the spirit and supporting the event.
Mayor needs to do better. It's such a simple gesture, why so lazy?

Good attitude, why not tell all the "fake cowboys" who come to town to watch and be entertained that you don't need western wear to enjoy the show? Tell me how that goes

Meh. He'd get criticized for trying too hard, being fake, or trying to act like it's the same as Stampede if he did. People will find a reason to be mad either way.

Trying too hard is not something I associate with our current mayor.

On any issue.

Yawn. This whole thread reminds me of why politics is so shitty these days... Sniping comments that deliver little substance. Rather pathetic!

I don't know, my family comes from a region of Alberta where the rodeo doesn't necessitate the regalia wearing. You can have rodeos with different aesthetics. But if he wanted to lean into it, the plaid shirt really helps with it to make it feel comfortable for someone who wears a lot of suits.
