Cool! The colours work well with the Shaw Tower streak.

Old Granville Street lighting, 50s and before

I just came across this artist's site... He has done some really nice paintings of downtown Vancouver back in the day.... The street lighting back then must have been amazing... I feel so sad to consider what we've lost, and I'm not even from here!

^Some amazing stuff there. So many great images. It's really interesting to see some of those such as the White Rock Beach circa 1929 one or the Victoria Inner Harbour one before they had the waterfront walkway all along there. Or the Lonsdale Quay one circa 1919 that has that one building in it that is still standing there today. Fascinating stuff.

Ok, here is what i am talking about. I wish Vancouver had one small block or one/two intersections in our commercial/entertainment district that has a flavor of the Dotombori district in Osaka. To me this shows how LED screens, fun advertisements, lots of neon and locally relaxed light/noise by-laws can strongly enhance a commercial/entertainment district, and become attractions themselves. Of course this is not everyone cup of tea, hence such atmosphere would be restricted to one or two small areas in Metro-Van, NOT ALL OF DOWNTOWN. Again the corner of Robson and Granville and adjacent area comes to mind.

Here is the link:

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=165802

Not my photos but i have been there and i loved it for a fun night out eating/shopping.

Also note all the towers with the red beacons on top for aircraft, the majority of these towers are around the same hight of Vancouver's towers yet how come we dont require beacons? Even though we have low flying aircraft incredibly close to downtown in a climate that often sees fog and mist? The funniest thing is all of our tower crane do have red warning beacons but the building they construct dont!

I saw them building that, i was hoping they would be the colours of the rings, but i will take that over what was there before Around here beggars can not be choosers. The funny-thing is for a city that experiences so much rain, fog, mist and general dreary weather for half the year (don't get me wrong, no where is better than here in the summer!) and high rates of SAD (and studies have shown that bright lighting can improve the conditions of those suffering from SAD) that we don't embrace more LED and neon lighting. As i have stated before such features are not meant to be a stand alone attraction, but they are a vital ingredient in establishing a more upbeat buzz in entertainment/commercial districts and indeed the entire city. the funny thing is such features do not have to be on all the time either, i don't see why we can not have more lights and screens downtown that turn off at midnight on weekdays and maybe at 1 or 2 on friday and saturday night (like they do in Japan) to make compromise with the downtown residents.

And i feel i should put on my disclaimer, Vancouver is my favorite city, 90% of it is perfect, but there is always that 10% margin that can be worked on, and city lighting and the management of entertainment/commercial districts (such as canceling the opening of bars on Robson because of NIMBYs, creating longer service/drinking hours for bars, clubs and restaurants, and allowing more dancing and music in restaurants, etc...) happens to be an issue that falls into that 10% that needs to be addressed. I could not believe that the Cactus Club closes at midnight on a friday night on Robson street! That is small town mentality.

yes i saw them do all 5 colours of the rings when I first saw them - like I said i couldn't get my camera ready fast enough

but for the most part when I was there they stayed white for at least 10 minutes and I gave up waiting for them to change

the video doesn't show what they can do entirely

the 5 colour rings were by far the most awesome - i love the way they loop and light up

I suggest everyone make a trip to the airport to see them in person - they really are worth the trip - well its kinda lame really to do that but its was cool

Yeah those are really high quality white LEDs. Most cheap ones aren't really exact "white."

At least the comments after the first are smart. I hope to see them myself in person soon (saw them about 10 times when under construction). After the Olympics i hope they are replaced by another lighting feature, that is if they are taken down (it would be great if they were permanent)

Interesting PDF of Winnipegs master lighting plan for Portage Ave, the main drag in downtown Winnipeg.

http://www.downtownwinnipegbiz.com/r...Plan_Final.pdf

Kinda makes you wish we had a few of their city planners transplanted over here...

Interesting stuff. I would like to point out that it's not a planning department initiative, it's their Downtown BIA that sent out the Request for Proposals. (Just to make sure we slag the right people locally.)

This should put a smile on a few faces here, I had hinted at this a while back, well the rfp went out today.

1. Introduction:

About Us:
Canada Place is the inspiring national landmark welcoming local residents, visitors and ships to the West Coast of Canada. Canada Place Corporation (CPC) is the financially independent federal agent responsible for ensuring the award-winning facility is a vibrant and inviting destination for visitors and the community. Located in the heart of Vancouver's harbour front, Canada Place will be home to the Main Press Centre, which is part of the Main Media Centre for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Canada Place welcomes 3 million visitors annually and is home to the Vancouver Convention Centre, Pan Pacific hotel, Port Metro Vancouver offices and Cruise Ship Terminal, IMAX Theatre and World Trade Centre Office Tower. CPC hosts a number of annual marquee community events including Canada Day and Christmas at Canada Place.

2. Project Description:

Canada Place is seeking a highly qualified, creative and dynamic company to address the architectural lighting needs of the facility and in Phase 1, design a year-round nightly light show on Canada Place's iconic sails. Since our inception during the Expo '86 World Fair, Canada Place has been a gathering place for the public and an internationally recognized landmark. The light show will serve to revitalize Canada Place, inspire our guests and create an emotional connection to Canada. Using various graphics and styles,
the light show will project images of Canadiana as well as demonstrating high impact colors, shapes and movements
.

3. Scope of Work and Objectives:

The project location is Canada Place in Vancouver, BC and its architectural sails. There are 5 ninety-foot high sails made of white Teflon coated fabric providing the roof structure of the interior convention facility. Phase 1 will include a year-round nightly light show on the West sails which will be changeable a few times throughout the year, specifically to highlight holiday seasons or events. The show could potentially operate in conjunction with our existing LED lighting system. The Phase 1 scope of work to include:
- Creative concepts and design of a year-round annual light show on the sails
- Infrastructure (permanent & weather proof)
- Installation
- Programming
- Technical requirements
- Electrical infrastructure

We would like to have Phase 1 complete and operational by November 1, 2009. Please indicate in detail how you would execute the scope of work above and address the following objectives:
- Design a dynamic nightly light show on the sails visible at the site and from
points around Vancouver including Stanley Park and the North Shore
- Connect Canada Place guests with Canada, 365 days a year
- Enhance the guest experience at Canada Place
- Deliver on Canada Place Corporation's commitment to being Inspirationally
Canadian
- Execute the program on time and on budget
- Work with CPC team in a collaborative and professional manner

Here's an idea at what Pavco is trying to accomplish, note the pdf is 10mb so download it before opening.

Cool...I'm guessing it'll be a permanent expansion of the Christmas light show we saw a few months ago.

I'm also guessing phase II is the east side of Canada Place?
