I decided to hop accross the harbour from Dartmouth and check out some of the sites in Halifax first hand. I took my camera along and snapped these:

Nice photos!

I don't remember seeing this much construction in the city before and these are mostly nice projects now. Even though we sometimes complain that building designs are a bit behind the times, they have come forward a tremendous amount over the past few years. I could see this trend continuing since the city's economy is so solid.

The only sad part of this is that I wish you had a picture of a construction site for Salter instead of the parking lot.

One photo I'd like to see is the view down Summer Street from the block north of Spring Garden Road - I'm interested in seeing how much the lab buildings will improve the look of the area. It was kind of sparse on the south side before because it was the Summer Gardens "park" and then parking lots.

Nice photos Wishblade.

Good to see I'll have someone to take my place come Fall.

P.S. Someone123 I usually walk near that area when I'm in town so I can shoot a photo for you next month sometime.

I can tell you from being down there today that it looks impressive and when approaching SGR walking South on Summer it appears like the urban landscape continues. Now if Dal builds something in the parking lot next to this it would be great... especially something taller (which I think was in a campus plan posted recently)

Thanks guys

I promise my next ones will be larger. I forgot to switch my camera off low res lol.

I took the picture of the parking lot with maritime centre just to show the incredible influence the tower has on the area. Hopefully when salters is built it will mitigate this a bit.

edit: I added a couple more pictures from today. One of Fenwick tower and one of the salters site and new boardwalk section from the top of metropark.

Here is the Dal Master Plan blog:
https://blogs.dal.ca/campusplan/

And a link to the master plan itself (big PDF):
http://campusplan.dal.ca/Files/Report_Sept_2009.pdf

The proposed Carleton campus improvements are on page 32, basically a 4 story (over the current Tupper loading dock area), 6 story (on the corner of University and Summer extending to, and including the CRC), and a 19-story building (over the current Tupper link area and plaza). Quite a bit of intensification on the site!

This is very interesting. It is interesting to note that Dalhousie has 3.8 million square feet of space and the projection is for 4.3 million square feet by 2013 which is almost as much as all of the office space in downtown Halifax. Halifax would be a much smaller city without Dalhousie.

Its the cropped postcard image, but in better quality.

In the original image you can see more to the south.

Thanks for posting WishBlade. I noticed some holes in the ground that I was previously unaware of.

And the next time we get hurricane weather, one fewer city will have an urban path on the ocean

Found this shot on Spacing Atlantic's website. Its of Dartmouth sometime after 1970 (MacKay Bridge is standing). Click HERE to see a more bearable size and the associated article talking about an old proposal for the Dartmouth Ferry Terminal before the current complex was built;

Haha, on the website, in one of the conceptual pics, a woman is smoking inside. Oh how we've changed.

It's nice to see that there were some ambitious modern designs for the old ferry terminal. And it even looks like they had a design competition.

Does anyone know why we ended up with the terminals we have instead of something bigger and more formal such as these ones?

As you may (or may not have) noticed, all these designs ostensibly obliterate what was to become and is now known as Historic Properties. It was the beginning of heritage conservation in Halifax, which arguably at the time was direly needed.

As we all know the pendulum has swung too far the other way in recent years.
