The Mountain West already invited Utah State, and they turned it down. Comcast and The Mtn West are reaping what they have sowed with The MTN. They developed a substandard product, that took way to many years to make it to satellite, and gave the same amount of tv revenue to all schools, giving Utah and BYU the same money as Wyoming etc, screw over your money makers and they are going to leave you. Now they are attempting to recover their largest television market by a small percentage by recruiting Utah State and try to capture some of the SLC TV market.

Expect to see USU and SJSU to get an invite within a couple days...

The real loser in all this is Boyzee State. I almost feel bad for them.

Don't feel too bad for them. They will continue to get the "easy road" to the BCS, even in the new MWC AKA WAC 2.0.

I still wouldn't be surprised if Utah State took them up on their offer this time.

The Mtn West has decided to not invite Utah State into the conference at this time.

It would be interesting to see if the Mountain West would have officially sent USU an invite. There's a possibility they were just trying to figure out what was going on regarding BYU and the WAC by gauging USU's interest in coming over to the Mountain, and to at least try and get BYU to stick around. If USU would have actually gotten in that day though, it would have been more luck than anything. I'm still crossing my fingers as the Mountain West would be much better than what the WAC is becoming, but as of now things look to be staying the same ...for a season.

Some news from the CV:

(c) Storee Powell

http://www.cachevalleydaily.com/news...119005989.html

Quote:
Herbert signed House Bills 4 and 57 Tuesday at Utah State University. House Bill 57, sponsored by Rep. John G. Mathis, R-District 55, allows for the development of the first doctoral-level veterinary program in Utah.

House Bill 4 is the General Obligations and Bonds Authorizations Bill, sponsored by Rep. Gage Froerer, R-District 8, providing funding for a new business building and a new Tooele Applied Technology College building located on USU land on the USU Tooele education corridor.

The big news out of that is the announcement that funding has been received for the new business building on campus. Renderings from a couple of years ago:

It will connect to the current business building with a skybridge I believe.

Quote:
“As for the bonding, building costs are extremely attractive right now, and we can build buildings for significantly less than we expect to be able to build them in a few years from now,” Draxler said of the new business building. “We have some encouraging signs in our economy that hopefully means we are on the upswing. The timing was now for both of these issues.”

The business building, totaling $30 million, was funded with $14 million of state funds and a $16 million private match. The building will be approximately 100,000-square-feet and located just south of the current George S. Eccles Business Building on the USU campus.

The $14.9 million Tooele Applied Technology Building received $9.9 million in state funding and $5 million from Tooele City. The 67,000 square foot building will stand on property owned by USU immediately west of the new Tooele County School District Community Learning Center.
I'll post a more comprehensive update of projects with pictures in the next week or two as spring arrives.

Picture update on recent Logan developments

Downtown Chuck-A-Rama is finished. How it faces away from the street, and the parking leaves a lot of be desired for a downtown location, but the material and look of the building is pretty top notch.

The Riverwoods complex continues to develop. The 200+ unit apartment complex is nearly complete. Additional office space is also now starting to rise, seen in front of the apartment complex

The new Ag building at USU is nearly complete. This building is massive, especially the glass portion which looks to be 5-6 stories in height. You can see the glass portion from nearly anywhere in Logan. It really stands out.

Very nice Tony, Logan is looking as beautiful as ever. Whoa...That's definitely the best lookin Chuck-A-Rama along the Wasatch. The Ag building is very cool. It reminds me a little of the new Convention Center in Provo.

Yeah they went all out on that Chuck-a-rama. There's a lot of other features they put into it like the wagon, as well as another replica inside with other vintage replicas.

Speaking of Provo, the Ag building reminds me a little of the Novell building there:

Neighborhood Centers

Logan approves new 'Neighborhood Center' zone 3-1

The parameters by which Logan's new "Neighborhood Center" zone will operate are now set.

...

Designed to enhance walkable communities, development in neighborhood centers may occur in and adjacent to residential areas so long as it is compatible with the neighborhood.

The neighborhood centers must be limited to parcels located at least a quarter mile away from other centers and commercially zoned properties. The ground floor footprint for buildings in the center is limited to 3,000 square feet, which may be increased to 5,000 square feet with a conditional use permit.

Zone changes for downtown Logan approved
By Jennie Christensen

Story Created: Sep 22, 2011 MDT

Story Updated: Sep 21, 2011 at 10:25 PM MDT

Quote:
One by one Logan's municipal council Tuesday night took actions that could over time mean dramatic changes for downtown Logan. Following public hearings the council approved a resolution supporting a joint plan between the city and the Logan Downtown Alliance to encourage housing in Downtown Logan.
Quote:
The council also voted four to one to change the zone from Public to Town Center at the northeast corner of Church Street and Federal Avenue. The zone change involved a little over one-half acre (.59 acres) at 76 East 200 North. Councimember Laraine Swenson abstained from voting saying she was concerned about the density that could be part of a housing project at that location.

Supposedly there's been a mixed-use project downtown proposed by Cowboy Partners.

Logan's surprise high rise

Posted: Sunday, September 25, 2011 1:00 am | Updated: 11:10 pm, Sat Sep 24, 2011.

By Kate DuHadway

Quote:
A proposed six-story, 140-unit student housing development near 600 East and 1000 North has left neighborhood residents wondering how such a dramatic zoning change was made without their knowledge — and what, if anything, they can do about it now.
Quote:
Housley said at this point, from a legal perspective, it no longer makes a difference what residents think of the zoning change because the developer, who has already bought some properties, now has a “vested right” in the current zoning. Even if the planning commission were to change the zoning back to single family at this point, the developer would still be legally entitled to develop the property according to how it was zoned when he bought it.
Quote:
Housley did say, however, that the specific project still has to be approved through the Planning Commission, and neighborhood residents can still make their voices heard when it comes to whether the proposed development can achieve a “density bonus” that will allow for 140 residential units to be built on the relatively small parcel of land.

More on the potential Cowboy Properties downtown development:

Quote:
The changes will allow Utah-based Cowboy Partners, a potential developer of the site, to go forward with plans to build a complex. Retail businesses are planned for the ground level, and residential apartments for the top two levels.
Quote:
The potential development on Church Street and Federal Avenue is still in the planning stages, Lofgren said. He expected the plan for the area to be finished and submitted in three to four months. If approved, he hopes to begin construction by the spring of 2012, and open the structure for businesses and residents the following year.

Lofgren said the nature of the development would resemble the Liberty City Walk, a recently completed development built by Cowboy Partners on 300 East and 200 South in Salt Lake City.
http://news.hjnews.com/news/article_...cc4c03286.html

I'm glad the city has been proactive in ensuring this development be mixed-use. The Liberty Citywalk in Salt Lake doesn't even have ground-level retail.

USU proposals

A lot of activity going on at USU:

A new 30mill rec center has gained momentum. The fields should be completed next year and the actual rec center a year or two after:

http://www.usu.edu/aggiereccenter/

The athletic department has announced construction of a new 7.5m practice facility that will be used for volleyball/woman's basketball, practices, etc. Basically freeing up more time for the Spectrum.

They've also announced a new high-end strength and conditioning center. The cost is in the 6m range and they have a private donor of 5mill already:

More: http://news.hjnews.com/news/article_...cc4c03286.html

The new business building addition will be known as Huntsman Hall, and will connect and surround the current 9-story building. They're currently selecting a contractor:

http://huntsman.usu.edu/huntsmanhall/

There's also two new large student housing projects.

BlueSquare is a mixed-use development that will house up to 480 students and have retail/commercial as well. This is under construction:

Independence student living will be 6 stories and house up to 600 students. It's been approved and the developers have already bought the land. There's been a lot of controversy over this project regarding the height though and they're conducting a traffic impact study, so we'll see if it goes through as is - http://www.cachevalleydaily.com/news...135176338.html

There's a few buildings actually going up on campus right now as well and I'll have some pictures soon.
