I don't understand why the made the sides of the Monarch two different styles and colors. It looks like they squished together two different buildings and put the same roof on top.

The offset windows on the end, the curved facade, the crown (very unique) and those huge bay windows at the top. I especially like those big bay windows at the top.
Just drove from Mopac into downtown using Cesar Chevez. It was just after sunset and the Monarch was gorgeous. You cant even see the orange planks from that distance. It just looks like a glass building. My wife mentioned she like the randomness of the bldg. And she has good taste, after all, she married me!

I love the way this building looks.

First off, that's BURNT orange accents on the balconies. Nothing wrong with that! Plus, I love asymmetry, something which this building embraces (on the narrow sides, lower floors, especially!) The colors are popular neutrals which should look appealing for a few more years. The crown is unique and interesting. And the balconies could be A LOT worse, I think. The Monarch's balconies are much more interesting to me than most of the typical condo developments one would see.

I wouldn't be suprised if the Monarch wins some architectural awards. Can't wait to see the lighting, too. This is really one of my favorite Austin buildings.

I agree, This is a very nice building, and really makes a statement on the Austin Skyline. I was looking at it yesterday while me and some friends were waiting to get inside the new Long Performing Arts Center. and I was thinking what an interesting neat building we have on the West End.

Here's a theory on those side windows. They always remind me of one of those genetic profiles. Might they represent or be inspired by ... butterfly DNA?

At any rate, I do find them interesting in an offbeat way.

They do look like Gel Electrophoresis, I hadn't thought about that. Interesting...

wonder if they are testing color? Projects often test large areas of paint before commiting.... ?

The top of the building has a line of lights running across it. The lights are blinking and if I remember correctly colored red then blue. Kinda like Christmas lights.

Really? Wow, well I havn't seen the lighting yet but It wouldn't be all that bad to have multi-colored lighting on the skyline if done tastefully. Austin does not have any multi-colored lighting on any building in downtown, unless its around Christmas or once in awhile 4th of July...

Well, that definitely keeping it weird. I guess the guys living at the top will need some good curtains in their bedroom if they want to get any sleep....

Monarch has the lights that paul was talking about going tonight. I would describe them as too small, but very similar to xmas tree lights that alternate colors of green/red/blue. They really don't create much drama to the building. In fact, they are dwarfed by the building and if your not paying attention you would not notice them.

I haven't seen them yet. But do you think maybe they could be for some kind of promo thing for the building? I really hope they come up with a nice lighting design for the building. It could end up being a VERY elegant looking building at night with the crown light.

Have no idea what they may be - never seen anything like it. They certainly would be unique, but not the type of dramatic lighting that one would expect. It is very understated. I was driving into downtown alone, so I really couldn't give it the attention they deserve for a fair critique, but gut feel says they could do much, much better.

I have yet to even see the lighting. Have they been lighting it up every night or just every now and then?
