T’PURAM: Virtual Reality. We all know it now — An artificial environment or system created with computer hardware and software. And this revolutionary technology has now arrived at the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram (CET).
A virtual reality (VR) lab,
a first of its kind in any engineering college in the state, has been installed and commissioned at the CET Department of Computer Science and Engineering by Tata Elxsi Ltd. The Systems Integration Division of the company in the city has set up the lab for
advanced 3-D viewing and immersive visualisation effects.
So what exactly does it mean? “For example, today car manufacturers design and make several models digitally and decide on which model to launch after seeing and experiencing the various digital prototypes virtually on a VR lab,” says Jeemon Thomas, area manager, Systems Integration Division, Tata Elxsi, Thiruvananthapuram.
To enter this environment and interact with the system, one makes use of special peripheral devices such as goggles, head-mounted devices, special gloves and force feedback devices.
“Stereographic image projection creates virtual reality with the help of sophisticated hardware and software,” says Jeemon. The application areas of the technology include digital prototyping, CAD/CAM, automobile, 3-D content and game development, aerospace, drug discovery, molecular modelling, training and education, history museums, oil and gas exploration, architecture, defence and medical field.
The college has procured the facility as part of the World Bank-aided Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme of the Government of India, says V Santhakumari, professor and head, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, CET. “The facility was installed recently and our staff will now be trained in dealing with the technology,” she says.
The CET aims at providing cutting-edge technology infrastructure to students and researchers.
Tata Elxsi has commissioned and maintains many VR installations in the country. It delivers outsourced product design and R&D services and solutions to customers worldwide and provides solutions through product design services, design and engineering services, system integration services and visual computing labs.
