THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 5 : Grasim Industries is working out a business plan to convert its defunct pulp division in Kozhikode to a knowledge park. Both Centre government and Kerala government have received letters from Grasim on Wednesday to this effect.
"We have commissioned an international consultant to undertake a feasibility study," says the letter to Kerala government. The consultant is expected to identify the right knowledge-based industry option for the Mavoor unit.
The DPR (detailed project report) is expected within eight weeks," says the Grasim communique.
Grasim Industries has plans to utilise 400 acres of the Birla industrial township in Mavoor to create an
IT-based hub. Much of the machinery has been moved out or sold, but the land, buildings and two types of employee quarters are in usable condition. The pulp division was closed in 2001. This was following charges of polluting the adjacent Chaliyar river and allied labour problems
