Damn, I wish it was THIS summer I was going to the Maritimes! Oh well, at least I saw Annick Gagnon in PEI. Not the best music, but she was hot.

Modest Mouse to play Halifax Forum in August

By STEPHEN COOKE Entertainment Reporter
Tue. Jun 16 - 4:31 PM

Washington State indie band Modest Mouse will be in Halifax for a concert on Monday, Aug. 17. (CHRIS ANTHONY)

Acclaimed Washington State indie band Modest Mouse makes its Halifax debut on Mon., Aug. 17 at the Halifax Forum Multi-Purpose Room.

The band, which formed in 1993, achieved wider mainstream success in 2004 with the platinum-selling Good News for People Who Love Bad News, earning it two hit singles and a Saturday Night Live appearance.

The following release, 2006’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, saw the unlikely addition of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to the lineup, which led to its first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, with hits like Dashboard and Missed the Boat.

After two years spent promoting and touring for We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, Modest Mouse recently released the single Satellite Skin in advance of a new EP No One’s First and You’re Next.

Due out in August, the eight-song EP will consist of unreleased tracks from the sessions for Modest Mouse’s previous two albums.

One song, King Rat, will be accompanied by a video directed by the late Heath Ledger, with animation by director/Monty Python alumnus Terry Gilliam, with whom the actor was working at the time of his death in January 2008.

Tickets for this all-ages performance are $30 at all Ticketpro outlets (www.ticketpro.ca or 1-888-311-9090).

You're gonna like the new entrance/exit to the Magnetic Hill site... a lot wider and *gasp* streetlights! No more staggering home in the dark.

The summer concert season starts this weekend...

Ticket sales heating up

bowie.adam@dailygleaner.com

Ticket sales have been steady for FredRock 2009, but festival organizers are hoping spontaneous Maritime concert-goers will bump this weekend's show closer to a sell-out.

Promoter Nick Zildjan said a maximum of 15,000 fans will be able to attend the two outdoor concerts - featuring headliners The Black Crowes on Saturday and a Sunday evening performance by Live.

He said a lot of tickets will have to be sold before they reach that mark, but the organizers aren't worrying about the numbers.

"We're probably at around 40 per cent of our goal, but we know this town," he told The Daily Gleaner earlier this week.

"We've put on hundreds of shows around Fredericton and we know that a lot of people wait until the last minute to buy their tickets. And this is a first-time festival. This event was never supposed to compete with the bigger events happening around the Maritimes.

"As long as we get a good crowd and everything goes off well, we'll be happy."

Tickets are available at www.ticketbreak.com or as printed hard-copy tickets at local CD Plus stores, Tony's Music Box Ltd., Reid's Newsstand, Winner's Lounge, and the CANEX mall.

Music fans can purchase a three-day pass, a two-day pass, or a one-day pass. Zildjan said sales have been stepping up as the event draws near.

"They've really picked up lately and that wasn't surprising," he said.

"The hard tickets have been selling really well. And we've been pretty surprised at the popularity of the one-day tickets. Both of those nights have been selling really well -whether that means someone could only make it to one of the nights, or they're only interested in seeing one of the major headliners."

Joe St.Coeur is planning to pick his tickets up soon and he's looking forward to seeing a great rock and roll concert.

"I'm buying tickets for the Saturday night show," he said.

"I want to see The Black Crowes. I've got some friends that have seen them and they told me they were a great band to see live. And I work a lot of weekends, so this might be the only show I'm going to make it to this summer."

---------------

Nice to see ticket sales aren't as bad as first thought...there were rumours as late as last week that they were so low the headliners might not even take the stage. ~7000 seems to be a decent number for something like this....I'm hoping the rain won't be as bad as they're saying.

As I've said before, I'm a die-hard Black Crowes fan so I'm super stoked for tomorrow...anyone else coming?

Noise complaints still echoing after Fredericton rock concert
Last Updated: Monday, June 22, 2009 | 10:53 AM AT
CBC News

Fredericton's three-day rock festival is over but the debate over the controversial event is continuing between organizers and local residents.

Heavy rain during Saturday's top show featuring the Black Crowes kept many people away, but the weather did not drown out the loud music.

"It was extremely noisy, it was extremely bothersome," said Chris Baker, a Fredericton resident who has led the opposition against the FredRock music festival.

He said the rain helped limit the number of people who showed up for the concert, and those who did show up left quickly after the band finished.

But Baker was still upset with the noise, especially since the Black Crowes continued their set well beyond the 11 p.m. deadline.

Baker said didn't he expect the plug to be pulled at the deadline, but he said the promoter took advantage of that.

"Mike Babineau said, 'Well, you know, we're going to need some extra time' and stuff like that. But he clearly left us with the impression it would be shorter rather than longer," Baker said.

However, Babineau, the event organizer, said he received permission from city council to go to 11:30 p.m.

"Should there have been problems on the stage or they wanted to go on for an extra encore, we wanted to have that buffer zone to 11:30," he said.

Babineau said about 6,000 people turned out Saturday, an acceptable crowd given the weather.
More meetings planned

Many people in the Sunshine Gardens opposed the concert plans from the outset. A community meeting was held to give residents an opportunity to voice their concerns with the event.

Fredericton's transportation committee eventually approved parking restrictions for the neighbourhood.

Now that the concert is over, Baker said, another meeting will be held to discuss FredRock's impact.

Baker said he and many others will object if promoters want to have another rock concert next year.

"It might have been successful for [the promoters], but it certainly wasn't successful for us," Baker said.

Oh, boo hoo. These guys really need to get a grip. It's two evenings out of the year for a concert that's great for everyone. These NIMBYs drive me crazy. Their only concern in the world is that their little properties exist in a special bubble that protects them from the world. None of them ever seem to have a concept of the greater good. Or that living in society often means you have to put up with inconveniences now and again.

Drum festival announces lineup for 10th anniversary show in 2010

The Cape Breton Post

SYDNEY — The Cape Breton International Drum Festival will mark a successful first decade with a star-studded lineup in 2010.

The festival recently confirmed that some of the biggest names in drumming — including Roxy Petrucci, Pete Lockett, Dom Famularo, Virgil Donati, Carmine Appice, Jerry Mercer, Alan White, Denny Seiwell, Paul Wertico, Bill Cobham, Scott Atkins, Dylan Mombourquette, Billy Ward, Steve Wilton, John Morrison, Pete Lockett, Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie, Asani/Ed Mann, Skip Hadden, Danny Seraphine, Liberty Devitto and Chris Sutherland — will take part in their 10th annual event, May 22-23, 2010 at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay. Special guests for the event will be Sean Mitchell, Moe Hashie, Mark Marshall and Ben Ross.

“We are very excited to confirm world drumming megastars Virgil Donati, Denny Seiwell, and Bill Cobham will be amongst the drummers performing at the festival next year,” said festival co-director Jennifer Nemeth. “In a bold move that clearly shows the high regard the Cape Breton International Drum Festival holds in the world drumming community, early commitment from many of the world’s finest performers has enabled the directors to confirm a stellar lineup at such an early date.”

“Ten years is a big milestone,” noted fellow festival director Ryan MacArthur.
“So many drummers and percussionists wanted to be here and we have an amazing lineup and people will be very happy to see past favourites such as Bernard “Pretty” Purdie and Pete Lockett return. New York session giant Billy Ward, who was at the first and fifth years, is back to share the historic 10th year celebration. We couldn’t imagine doing it without him.”

The 2010 festival will also feature two master classes, which will be available for a special two-for-one ticket price.

The 2010 Legends Awards will be presented to Appice, White, Mercer, Petrucci, and Donati for their significant contributions to drumming and to education.

Tickets for the drum festival will be available July 1 online or at the box office at the Savoy Theatre, or at Centre 200 in Sydney.

Ireland’s Laoise Kelly will perform at the 13th edition of the Celtic Colours International Festival, which will have a special focus on Irish culture and music. Submitted by Laoise Kelly

The Irish are coming!
Lineup for 2009 Celtic Colours International Festival announced

LAURA JEAN GRANT
The Cape Breton Post

SYDNEY — The plotting begins for thousands of music fans now that the Celtic Colours International Festival lineup has been announced.

With 45 shows and approximately 425 artists featured as part of the nine-day festival set to take place Oct. 9-17, there will be some tough choices for people wanting to take in as much music as possible. Tickets for all shows go on sale July 6 at 9 a.m. so there’s just two weeks for many of those decisions to be made.

“The best thing to do is to go on the (Celtic Colours) website now, search out all the people that you know and you don’t know and figure out what concerts you want to go to,” said festival artistic director Joella Foulds, after the official release of the ’09 lineup.

It will be the 13th annual edition of the world-renowned festival which this year will have a special focus on Irish culture and music.

“We’ve got 24 Irish artists coming over and we’re incorporating them throughout the festival in a huge number of shows,” said Foulds, noting that Irish culture has never been specifically highlighted at Celtic Colours. “We’ve had Irish artists every year but we’ve never really looked into the depth of the Irish culture and that’s what we’re doing this year. We’re going to look at the various traditions and bring over the people that are the very best representatives of those traditions.”

Celtic Colours enlisted the help of Liz Doherty, a traditional Irish fiddle player and renowned teacher, in preparing for this year’s festival and finding the best of the best in all facets of Irish music including fiddle, harp, piping, accordion, dance, singing and storytelling.

Some of the visiting Irish artists fans may recognize include harpist Laoise Kelly, Maireád Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan, and Liam ó Maonlaí, who was a big hit at last year’s festival. Other lesser-known, but incredibly talented musicians, singers and dancers will also be making the trip.

The festival kicks off Oct. 9 at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre with Island to Island: The Cape Breton-Ireland Musical Bridge, which will showcase a mix of Irish and Cape Breton performers. Other festival highlights include two performances of the Suite Silver Dart, featuring Symphony Nova Scotia, a show entitled The Fiddle Tree, showcasing luthier Otis Tomas’ instruments and music, as well as a special tribute to fiddler Jerry Holland, which will close out the festival.

“Jerry is renowned all over the world and we really can’t take that for granted,” said Foulds. “We just want to tell him we love him.”

Other performers set to take the Celtic Colours stage in 2009 include fiddle harp duo Chris Stout and Catriona McKay, fiddler Sarah McFadyen, Mairi Campbell and Gaelic singer Brian Ó hEadhra, all from Scotland; Le Vent du Nord from Quebec, fiddler Sierra Noble from Manitoba, and Abby Newton and Kim Robertson from the United States. A full slate of well known Cape Breton artists are also set to perform at home including Ashley MacIsaac, the Barra MacNeils, Carl MacKenzie, J.P. Cormier, Marc Boudreau, Peter Gillis, Rachel Davis, Shelly Campbell, Wendy MacIsaac, The Men of the Deeps, Tom Fun Orchestra, and many, many more.

For the full schedule and lineup of artists visit www.celtic-colours.com. Beginning July 6, tickets can be purchased online through the website or by phone at 567-3000, or 1-888-355-7744 (toll free in North America).

Remeber this is the same bunch who complained about the flag being too loud at the Superstore on Smythe Street which is absolutly ridiculous. I also remeber seeing a letter to the editor in the Gleaner not too long ago about people in that neigborhood complaining that the air handling unit at the CARIS office was too loud. These people need to get a life.

Its too bad attendance wasnt better for the concert, im guessing the heavy rain might have had something to do with it. Hopefully it happens again next year.

Final preparations underway for Bon Jovi concert
June 26, 2009 - 3:52 pm
By: News 91.9 Staff

MONCTON, N.B. - Final preparations continue for tomorrow's Magnetic Hill Music Festival, with headliners Bon Jovi.

Ian Fowler with the City of Moncton says attendance will be in the 20 to 25 thousand range.

He says that's what they expected.

Those are the same numbers that country shows at the Hill have drawn.

He says they're expecting approximately 60 thousand fans to attend the AC/DC show in August, the same numbers that the Rolling Stones and Eagles drew.

Meanwhile, a number of improvements have been made to the concert site, including a wider main entrance, and better drainage to decrease the muddy conditions.

Everything went quite smooth...but the only complaint I had was the fact that ALL of the lights on the road (between the zoo and the water park) were turned OFF! Very dangerous, and whomever's bright idea this was should have a lot of explaining to do.

My only complaint, about the show itself) is that they should have screens further up the hill (like at the Stones) so those that don't want to stand down by the stage can relax on the hill, listen to the music and still 'see' what is happening on the stage.

Otherwise...very smooth, comfortable concert.

According to the T&T today, the final attendance figure for the Bon Jovi concert was in excess of 33,000!

This was a much higher figure than promoters had originally been hoping for. Ticket sales had originally been only quite modest; partly because of competition from other regional megaconcerts this year and also because of a dodgy long range weather forecast.

The day ended up being partly cloudy, humid and mild. Because of the favourable weather conditions, many people bought walk-up tickets for the concert (in fact more walk-up tickets than for any other concert in Magnetic Hill history). This pushed attendance to over 33,000.

The concert went off quite well. Burton Cummings was heard exclaiming from the stage: "this has to be the best concert site in North America!!"

Well........the T&T does tend to suffer from a chronic case of excessive civic boosterism but I don't think they would artificially inflate the attendance figures for the concert. I think 33,000 is 33,000 in this case.

Also, the Cummings statement is listed as a quotation, so I think there is some veracity there as well. Mind you, visiting artists are prone to say things such as "you guys are the greatest audience ever!!"; so what Cummings said may have to be taken with a grain of salt.

I was there...Cummings DID in fact say that, he also paused a second time and said something to the effect of "I can't get over how nice a site this is for a concert!"

I firmly believe the 33K...there were people pouring in all day...B-C were playing and people were still coming in.

PERFECT weather for a concert.

PS> Moosehead...you must be dreaming if you think I'm paying $7/beer.

Well everyone I heard from said the concert was great...and that 33,000 is either bang on or an understatement. Here are a couple pics from the T&T:

Not as big as that one, but "Rock the Dock" (Sydney's annual concert festival on the wharf) has announced their lineup.

Lineup for annual Rock the Dock event announced

The Cape Breton Post

SYDNEY — The dock will be rockin’ in early August.

Organizers of Rock the Dock 2009, a large outdoor rock show taking place Aug. 6-8 on Sydney’s waterfront, announced its lineup this week.

The annual three-day event, presented by Molson Canadian, will kick off with a bang Aug. 6 featuring up-and-coming alternative folk rockers, The Easy Bleeders followed by local pop rock band, Kick. Signal Hill, a four-piece acoustic guitar-based band from Newfoundland, will then take the stage, with acclaimed Celtic-rock group Rawlins Cross headlining the show. Rawlins Cross reunited last year after a hiatus and released Anthology, a 16-track CD which includes singles like Long Night and Reel n’ Roll.

The party continues Aug. 7 with local acts Gone Country and Forever followed by Canadian rockers Harlequin, whose music is still a staple on rock radio stations throughout the country with hits like Innocence, Did it for Love, Thinking of You and Superstitious Feeling. Headlining the evening will be the renowned Dr. Hook, featuring Ray Sawyer, who will perform many fan favourites including Sylvia’s Mother, Sharing the Night Together and Cover of the Rolling Stone.

The final night of Rock the Dock, Aug. 8, will be a tribute night, presented by Max 98.3. Tribute bands Green River, Tres Hombres and Desire will bring the sounds of CCR, ZZ Top and U2 to the stage.

Food and beverages services will be available all three nights.

A three-night super pass is now available at the special price of $25 while supplies last, and will then go up to $40. These deals will be for a limited time only.

The three-night super pass as well as individual nightly tickets, which are $20 in advance and $25 at the gate, are now available at all Rolling Phones-Bell locations, Mac’s Convenience on George Street, Cape Breton Curiosity Shop on Charlotte Street, and the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre box office or by phoning 539-2300.
