I am starting to hear of free transit happening so that riders do not come in contact with the drivers.

And in many places, there is no way to pay a fare if you do not go through the front doors.

Free unless you bought a monthly pass.

Riders in Ottawa can no longer use the train doors closest to the operator.

Toronto, Montréal, Vancouver and Ottawa's rapid transit systems have fare gates, so that maintains some of the revenue stream.

HSR (Hamilton) started that on Wednesday, I believe.

Here in Gatineau STO have announced that regular service levels are being maintained in spite of a major collapse in ridership.

The reasons give are that it's an essential service for many people, and that reasonably empty buses are actually good for "social distance".

Calgary is reducing the train service, but not bus service. Since the train served so many students and white collar workers, it has been extremely empty. 8 minute service at peak, 15 off peak.

I believe that’s the right thing to do. This is the one time when a 40’ conventional bus with 7 people seated far away from each other is a good thing.

London Transit also started free fares and rear door boarding today as well. Saw a few buses pulling up to stops where the driver stopped with the rear door near the people, and they started walking towards the front door, apparently not aware what was happening and therefore probably thinking the driver was an idiot lol.

They also announced they are cutting 6 or 7 routes, express runs mostly, and cutting back some of the weekend service on a few more.

Transit in Victoria and Nanaimo is free starting Mar 19 - rear boarding / exit. Can use front ramps if necessary. (the city of Victoria already provides free transit passes for youth under 18)

STO in Gatineau have said that they won't be debiting their customers who are on the yearly preauthorized monthly payment plan for their passes.

So basically the withdrawals scheduled for this Wednesday (covering April) will be cancelled. Passes will still be valid.

I know this as I have people in my household who are on this program.

Using PT is a bad idea altogether right now. Social distancing is impossible and you're bound to touch something while on board.

Do you know if OC done anything to compensate those who purchase(d) monthly passes? Probably not; they never did compensate anyone for the crappy service, other than holding the line on increases the already ridiculously expensive fares.

I'm just glad my partner and I pay our fares day-per-day instead of buying monthly passes. Even more glad we cancelled our downtown monthly parking earlier this year.

No idea but as you say it doesn't seem to be OC Transpo's style to give its riders much of a break even when problems are their fault.

In this case it's a nice gesture from STO but this is not their fault at all, plus they're still running their regular service. So they're holding up their end of the bargain even if their customers aren't taking advantage of it.

Obviously it's STO's way of recognizing that this is a challenging situation for everyone.

It really depends. Empty trains and buses are just fine just keep your distance as possible.

I guess, as long as you don't touch anything ...
