MTO widening approximately 75 km of highway to 10 lanes from 6-8 lanes in 8 years? I would love to see it, but I think we're more likely to see pigs fly.

Always the plan by 2030 for 10 lanes. Will be tight - after Dunlop they have to widen/build tiffen structure.

Dunlop will probably take 3 construction seasons. I can't see it starting before 2025.

Pre-Widening work will be done for the part thru barrie - at most will just need a repave to get proper slopes. - At least that was the plan.

Was just down in Windsor today and got to see how the 401 widening between Tilbury and near Merlin Line is going. The new lanes and median are complete from near Merlin Line to just past Queen’s Line, but the lanes are not yet open. There appears to be additional work happening on some of the drain overpasses. Between Queen’s Line and the Tilbury OnRoute, the new lanes are complete, and they are currently compacting the granular into the median, with some small sections of the median wall poured already.

Looks like they could finish by end of construction season.

They got bridge replacements lines up for the next 3-4 years. So optimistically if they start widening in 2025, they might complete in 2035 with the entire 75km. That's still optimistic but not out of the realm of possibilities.

They have pre-widened sections on the 400 near the King City and Highway 9 interchanges, so it is mostly a matter of repainting lines to increase the number of lanes though.

I would imagine the MTO would focus on the Barrie to Innisfil section first given the volume there.

The highway is already being widened south of Highway 9 with construction underway, there is only about 45km remaining. The highway has already been widened south of King Road.

And as others have said, basically all the major structures are done now or will be done by 2027 or so. Structures are the largest time sucks, it's mostly grading left over, and even then a lot of the bridge replacement projects are doing the grading already in their project limits.

2030 may push to 2031 or 2032, but I would be surprised if it's later than that, subject to it getting funding when it needs it, which it should given the current government.

yay! I drove to Chicago in July and between the 401 single lane construction zones and what felt like a half-dozen single-lane zones on I-94, it was a very frustrating drive. I took I-69 / the 402 back and it was a lot easier, plus I-69 has a 75mph limit which is nice

Of course after that part of the 401 is done they will start on the next stretch west of the 402... so it'll just be replaced with another single-lane zone.

It is kind of mind-boggling how big an interchange Highway 11/124 is for the traffic it handles.

There's a bunch of super-interchanges on the newer highways in Northern Ontario.

It only seems large as they used the old alignment for the new highway 124 extension.

Honestly I never really understood why the 418 was needed at this point in time, 35 does basically the same job.

This is probably why:

The knocks against 35/115 are the 90-kph speed limit and the westerly tilt to bypass Newcastle. Notice how there are 2 disjoint segments of Durham Regional Road 17. As for the 90-kph speed limit, even though most do 120 km/h, it’s always possible that O.P.P.‘s just lurking around at one of the shops on the way.
Of course, once Bowmanville grows and starts congesting 401, 418 will get a different use.

35 is a pretty lousy connection back to the 401 from the 407. It backtracks too much, and the interchange with the 401 is pretty outdated. They'd have a ton of truck rollovers if they expected truck traffic to use the ramps linking the westbound 401 to the northbound 35/115 and vice versa.

The 418 isn't very busy by Toronto standards (though, drivers still use it, and it's busier without tolls than it was before hand). The 418 is in an area that is rapidly growing, I bet by 2050, Clarington has 250,000 residents or more, and even as is, the 418 is still probably busier than any section of Hwy 69 north of Parry Sound.

It would be nice for the province to remove tolls on the 407 between the 418 and 35/115. That would create a full toll free freeway bypass of the 35-115, and both the 418 and 407 itself would serve as 'gateways' or feeders to the tolled section.

Maybe that could be a election pledge for 2026. Support was strong when Douggie removed tolls on the 412 & 418, and maybe he can maintain that with scrapping the 407's easternmost section toll too.
