I believe it's this one. Oof, it's ugly:

I wish developers would put some design into these shorter apt buildings. I really like this one planned for a block west:

You posted The Dewitt, which is what is being built in the pic I posted. I was asking about the activity to the west immediately in back of Dewitt

New SLC Project: 800 South - Design Review

Speaking of the Granary District, a new project filed today:

https://citizenportal.slcgov.com/Cit...howInspection=

Address: 330 W 800 S

Developer: Convexity Properties

Project Basics: 8 floors, 336 residential units (1,2, & 3 bedroom), 6,440 square feet of ground level retail. Project includes the addition of a midblock pedestrian access between 800 S and Kilby Court. Project will have 291 parking stalls for vehicles and bike parking for 98 bikes.

Project Description (from developer):
800 S is a mixed use development located at 800 South 330 West. It is envisioned as a focal point to its central block location that adds activity to the growing Granary District. Retail space intended for small local-serving vendors is planned along the 800 S frontage and a diverse mix of apartments are provided on the south / east side of the site. The site is unique in that it is adjacent to and provides access to the existing Kilby Court music venue. A mid-block pedestrian connection lined with green space and private patios is proposed along the property’s eastern edge which is in alignment with the Mid-Block Walkway Master Plan -- reinforcing the music venue as a destination within the existing neighborhood.

The retail and apartment structures are organized around a parking garage in the center of the site, screening it from the street. Studios, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom apartments are planned around a large outdoor amenity courtyard. Additionally, 2-story 3-bedroom ‘townhome’ style apartments with roof decks that encourage outdoor living will bring life above the 800 S frontage and activate the rooftops.

The structure is composed of brick masonry to establish a base that relates to surrounding context, and metal panels above that build upon the historic industrial character of the neighborhood. The 5-story portion of the building has a slightly different material strategy than the 8-story portion to provide diversity along the primary facade. The building massing has subtle movement to provide interest above the pedestrian level. The retail is set back 10 feet from the property line to provide additional green space and patios along the building frontage and invite pedestrian activity to the middle of the block.

Not bad, some minor adjustments and I would like it even more if I was being picky but it incorporates a lot of what most of us have been looking for with these infill projects. I really appreciate the retail and the set back from the street with dedicated outdoor space. That’s really nice compared to what we typically get. I would like to see the long massing broken up a little bit visually but that will be a nice project for what it is. More of this infill please. This would have been nice to see on 400s.

Good to see these kinds of developments stretching southward.

Does anyone else find it odd that none of the city's granaries are in the Granary District? I had assumed the old 5th South granary was in the district, but according to this map, it's not.

Yeah… and now they are trying to tear down West High.

I think a lot more people are going to object to West High then the theater though… so hopefully that don’t happen. I know some things are already being organized on the west side too fight against this.

They need to rip down all the extensions that have been added over the years, restore the main building and then do a new extension on the back that looks better and is not such a cluster****

There is no way they would tare down that school. They just recently had an expansion. It’s the state’s oldest high school, and it’s actually Being used with no other high school close in proximity to take in the students.

This isn’t some derelict theater people forgot about and hoped someone would buy and repair. Now, if there was a high school being built to replace it, like the new North West Jr. replaced the older one…that still current exists, I could see something happening.

I know they want to rebuild West High but I hadn't heard for sure that it would involve tearing the old building down. Maybe it'll get the Ogden High treatment.

They will likely demolish it like they demolished East High, which was frankly far more beautiful. They already put it out to bid as a new build and demolishing the old.

They don't demolish the old school until the new one is built. They just build the new one somewhere else on the property, like the football field or that athletic field across the street to the east.

Chill nobody knows what is happening with West yet lol. It's an old building in need of serious upgrades, but I wouldn't be surprised if they kept the historic part of it intact.

Yeah. See, that makes sense. I’m not a fan of the idea but not surprised. It’s my old high school. I remember going to SLCC South City Campus (old South High) and thinking how beat up West High seemed, even though I liked its overall interior design better. Granted, college students treat things differently than high school students.

They just built those new concrete bleachers and the extension to the west. I bet they built it across the street to the east.

Flash back to memories of having to jump trains to get to school. 2003 seems so long ago.

What about the other buildings?

Originally the other two buildings south of the theater were set for demolition, 156 S and 160 S (The Down Under Bar and Twisted Roots). Processing status has been on hold for a long time at the city for demolition. Anybody know anything about what's going on?

Losing West would be indefensible. We already lost East, which was a fucking gem. Salt Lake has a pathetic stock of historic school buildings and if West is torn down, that basically will only leave South as the last historic high school in the entire valley (now that Granite has been demolished).

Really frustrating how other cities can somehow preserve their beautiful schools (like Boise High School in Boise) but Salt Lake can't seem to figure it out. What they did to East should be considered a war crime.

Also, Highland is likely to be torn down and rebuilt too but that one is a bit more forgivable as the school was built in the 1950s and has always looked ugly (and I say this as someone who graduated from Highland).

They already did a lot of work in 1996-1997 to West High. They were originally going to do a full referb but I think they just ended up doing the seismic upgrades. They spent the money back then to preserve the building… now they need to just finish the job and do the full referb…. I would like to see them go the rout that south high did, that building looked gorgeous after the referb.

East and south both looked better from the get go… but West needs to be preserved. I am in the district of West High and have not spoken to anyone in the area who supports tearing down west.

If they did tear down west I imagine they would just build a new one across the street… but I think this idea is going to get canned when they open it up for public debat.

It blows my mind how districts here tear down so many amazing historic schools. Utah in the early 1900s really knew how to build badass looking schools. Utah now knows how to tear them down and build the most bland looking garbage in their place.

This all coming from a dude who graduated from a school that looks like this.

SLC has demolished ALL of its historical schools, except West at this point. I was especially sad about Uintah Elementary and East High, which were especially beautiful.
