^ Thanks for the update on that one. I don't think it has an actual name other than its address - 450 - 454 W Belmont (https://ca-ventures.com/new-18-story...east-lakeview/). Looks like that one is either topped out or almost topped out.

When we were in town last weekend, we walked next to this. I like how the black portion turned out, but the base is truly weird. If you walk by it, it looks like wood actually. Like they did a lot to put some design into it to make it look like wood from a small distance. It's concrete though.

It’s called ‘board formed’ concrete. Can be made to look really interesting.

It should be called form formed concrete - the pattern is from a rubber (?) form that is backed by plywood. Same way they put "bricks" on the Hudson (N LaSalle) that is a prime exhibit on how it looks when poorly done.

^Whether it's executed poorly or not, I would prefer this over smooth concrete on street-level any day.

Ah cool. Good to know. It actually looked pretty real and was cool. My comment about the weirdness of the base by the way doesn't have to do with this specifically. More of an overall design. The black glass is pretty great though.

That whole little area has definitely changed a lot for the better since a few years ago. I'm sure emathias is slightly happy.

Originally this was how all concrete was formed, but with actual boards and not rubber forms. This is an attempt to recreate the character of old concrete construction that was built in the era before plywood and definitely before teflon lined modular form systems like we see used on skyscrapers today.

Yes, the basement of our 1920s house looks exactly like this. I suspect they were not thinking of it as a trendy wall finish back then.

I find it very interesting that these days it's being done with a rubber pattern, but makes sense as they would then reuseable, whereas wood could only get a good texture once.

Also important to note is that the rubber mock "board-formed" pattern allows for an exaggerated wood grain/texture for aesthetic effect that wouldn't actually look like that if using actual wood planks unless they had been sandblasted or something. As well, it provides for the obvious benefit of preventing seepage between the boards and pieces of wood and wood fibers stuck in the surface of the cured concrete, which I have seen in old board formed walls from time to time.

It gets even crazier than that. Was just reading about Miguel Fisac in Spain who poured concrete into “formwork” basically made of rebar and garbage bags. It creates cushion-like textures or even abstract patterns without the repetitiveness of modular forms.
