A new MSG could be the single greatest arena in the world.

A rebuilt Penn Station (Trump Station?) would be the biggest happening in NYC since the original Twin Towers went up in 1972.

We have a chance to TURBOCHARGE development in the world's greatest city.

Indeed. The Grand Penn plan will absolutely supercharge development in this area. Fifteen years ago, the Grand Central area was forlorn. The extraordinary transformation that it has had will pale in comparison to the metamorphosis that will occur in the Penn area and Herald Square generally.

P.S.: Vornado should build a colossal tower on the Gimbel's site.

I'm hopeful MSG moves. I've been cheerleading that for a long time and reminding NYguy he has no monopoly on predicting the future. But this news seems an awful lot like a readout of a meeting he had with the GPA people and we already knew moving MSG was part of their "plan". Not sure if theres anything actually breaking news here honestly.

What's your obsession with tearing down Gimbels? A supertall wouldn't even look good sitting right on Herald Square like that anyways.

I like the Gimbel's building, but it's inevitable that it will be redeveloped. The same is true of The Roosevelt.

It's actually not inevitable. It's incorporation into a 2 block megadevelopment seems the most interesting possibility.

I am confused why someone would be excited about an option that replaces a supertall office tower with a suburban lawn. But hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Dolan (a GOP donor) opposes moving MSG and Vornado (a GOP donor) opposes losing their office supertall. And no one in public office in NYC will support replacing a supertall office tower with a patch of grass.

I cannot imagine this ever happening. It wouldn't even get started until the person that shall not be named has lost all power.

Dolan's permit runs out in 2028.

Trump and the associated decision makers could iron out acceptable or even favorable details for Vornado and Dolan.

You hate Trump, which is fine (lots of people do), but you can't let it cloud your judgment here.

Whatever the plan is for this site, it will be a tough sell as it will bring out the ultimates of the NIMBY/Karen/ArmchairCritic crowd. It's kinda/storta like the choosing of the WTC design.

I wonder why these articles claim that the move is contingent upon the Dolans. The clock is ticking on the permit. If it's not renewed, the Rangers and Knicks can't play there, nor can concerts be held there, unless the Dolans are content to limit the spectators to a few thousand. Further, eminent domain can occur. Finally, the tax exemption surely would be as readily out the window as the Prague Defenestration.

If the ASTM plan is selected and MSG is wrapped in a new facade, the oldest and worst arena in sports will essentially be locked in that absymal Tartarus in ad finitem.

AFAIK Vornado has two concepts for the site, or maybe three: replace with new tower, new tower on top of renovated and incorporated Gimbels/A+S/Manhattan Mall a la Macy's tower, and possible restore and incorporate into redevelopment of the 7 Av side of the block. It's anyone's guess whether that is Penn15 or sonething similar or a new MSG.

Apparently, Madison Square Garden has approximately 5.4 million square feet of unused development rights.

This, together with unprecedented gentrification of this presently forlorn area, would trigger a tsunami of development. This area would transform from Tartarus to Mount Olympus overnight.

My monthly obligated REALITY CHECK to this thread. It should be a sticky at the top of each page so I would't have to do it. But here goes:

Firstly, as far as Trump goes, if the man says 100 hundred things a day, maybe 5 of them would be grounded in any type of reality.

Secondly, Trump himself KNOWS how NYC zoning works, and what you can and cannot do. I get that the general public (reporters, etc.) don't, but I would expect people who actually follow these things on a skyscraper forum to know better.

But nothing gets done unless the City is willing to do it. Trump (the government/Amtrak) only has say on what happens with Penn Station, which is underground. They could purchase the theater, but buying the theater alone was considered too costly, much less the entire MSG arena. They are trying to decrease the cost of the new station.

The city would have to approve any new zoning for an arena move, which itself would take a few years. Not only do they not want to increase the cost of this project, but they supposedly would like to get it started before Trump leaves office.

Now, all you people have to do (as you keep saying) is wait until June or whenever.

No one claims that anything is a slam dunk. For all we know, the third plan, which we know nothing about, will be chosen.

However, it will be quite an affront if the best plan is not selected due to cost considering the hundreds of billions we’re spending on Israel’s war.

There may be something to that as it can explain some of the bizarre stuff we have had to field in this life.

There doesn't go a day that I do not feel offended by having to endure a realm where we have to endure that type of abhorrent character as president of the greatest country/democracy in the world.
