It's more than crystal clear to those making the decisions at Raleigh Studio. Studios/soundstages will come to the Valleys as the industry builds. Don't be surprised though if the Park City area becomes a little Hollywood.

I was kind of wondering that too. I think it would be cooler if the "Motion Picture Studio" would be down here in the valley somewhere near SLC.

I never thought about the fairgrounds, but not a bad idea.
Oh well. I'm not going to push my luck. Park City is fine too.

Not sure if this has been reported yet on here, but right next to this development the Air force wants to build a 800 room hotel. KSL is saying this hotel will be bigger then the "Grand American Hotel" in Salt Lake.

Gov. Jon Huntsman signed a controversial bill into law Tuesday that paves the way for development of a movie studio and large hotel at Quinn's Junction.

The legislation allows builders to bypass strict local zoning codes to potentially develop a massive movie studio alongside an 800-room hotel under the Military Installation Development Authority Act, which officials sometimes refer to as MIDA.

Elected representatives in Summit County say they wanted the governor to veto the legislation.

The governor, however, did attach a strongly worded letter to his approval of S.B. 216 that addresses many of the concerns voiced by local officials...

Why in the world would the Air Force have any interest in a large hotel in Park City?

From reading the article, it seems that their only role is allowing the developer to use some obscure military installations act to bypass local planning and zoning laws.

The US military has vacation places around the country for their servicemen and women. This is part of building out a network of vacation spots. I don't see a problem with the spot, but I think deference should be given to local planners who have laid out their master plan.

I don't see how it makes sense to build a military hotel or a movie studio in Park City. So lets build them both as part of the same development!

Something about this whole proposal smells fishy to me.

That smell traveled about 2,000 miles.

If my opinion is correct, it is quite shameful that entities have to "legally" abuse the system to have things there way.

I call it the power of greed.

On the flip side, if my opinion is correct, municipalities need to pay a bit more attention to the connotation of their codes and regulations.

Whatever happened to the Market Station Development?

Was it completed? I have not read anything about it. When I have been there, I never really think about it.

It seems that it was listed as already under construction 2 years ago according to a very early 2007 post.

I recently met with the developers and got an update... they are back on track. They had to pause and restructure due to financing but are ready to move full steam ahead.

Utah is really doing quite well in this recession compared to other states. Building continues downtown, Broadway Park Lofts is coming along nicely, the new Hyatt at the Gateway, now this wonderful news about Market Station, the new movie studio and hotel just announced up at Quinns Junction. Not too bad. Let's keep it up.

I will be doing my part for the construction by adding on to my home. Excavation begins in a couple of weeks as soon as I get my permit from the City of Bountiful.

While I'm not adding on or remodeling yet, I'll try to do my part be repainting, reroofing and relandscaping my yard now that I'm back in my house.

It might be how things are run in that organization--remember the gov't doesn't often do things efficiently, but moreso who can get what, i.e. if your organization is given $500 M, you don't spend $400 M and then give back $100 M so that someone else can use it--you find something else lavish to add to your project to add on that $100 M--because otherwise next time around you will only get $400 M. Stupid? Yeah probably, but that's how things work and it isn't likely to change anytime soon. So once they got the money to build, they aren't going to give it back just because 'it is a recession.'

Ripping out grass I hope

People around here plant too much grass in the most wasteful spaces (strips between driveways, sidewalks, etc). I bet we could cut our water consumption by a good 15-20% just by getting rid of un-used grass. I mean, i understand why people want a patch to play on, but why not cut out all the grass you don't use? You'll save money on water, you won't have to mow as much, etc. Fast food and retail centers could also get rid of grass.
