I think the bypass is the one that should be labelled 17 (and the business route 17A).

^ That would certainly be more consistent with how the rest of the network has been numbered.

Another accident on a 2 lane highway. Fortunately, it was cleared in about 2 hours.

Someone in the Ontario road group on Facebook showed some photos of twinning of Highway 3 Essex Bypass. I’m surprised that it includes a set of overpasses.

Pretty rusty for "new" structures. I guess they just haven't been painted yet.

I am curious if they are weathering/Cor-ten steel.

They are weathering steel bridges. The exterior rust layer is a sacrificial layer that limits further rust. These bridges are tremendously common in Ontario.

There is not too many of those original structures left on the 400. A handful in Barrie and just south, no? Some of them date back to the 1940s and 50s, so they have done their time.

It has been awhile since I’ve been down the 400.

All are from the early 1950’s. I believe there is only Highway 88 in Bradford, Essa Road, Dunlop St, and Sunnidale road left of the original bridges, and all will be replaced in the next few years.

The oldest bridges on the 400 series network are the 401 overpasses in Oshawa which date from the late 1930’s, making them about 85 years old. Those are also due to be replaced soon.

My Father was telling me the other day that he used to walk across the Sunnidale Road overpass on his way to his elementary school and back home. He thought that it was pretty new at that time so the early 1950s makes sense. He was telling me how he and friends would bike to it during long weekends to watch the Hwy 400 traffic jams. Of course the cars were quite interesting to see during that era. It was only four lanes back then but would be very busy at times.

My Dad drove through Barrie on the 400 this Summer and was amazed that the overpass is still standing and being used. He obviously knows that it won't be there much longer.

Sunnidale will come down next year, I believe. Essa Road has already seen work start to replace it. Highway 88 is also scheduled for replacement next summer.

Dunlop will be replaced in 2024.

Bayfield will likely be the last one standing, currently scheduled to be replaced in "2024-2025".

Bayfield is the last major structure to be replaced on the 400 to clear the way for a widening. The whole highway will likely be widened to 10 lanes south of the 11 split by 2030.

One might extrapolate that if it has been jammed up even back then, no widening project will ever be enough.
