^^ Interesting... You're probably correct. Parks and recreation is an approved use under the PD, so there's no issue building a baseball field. But who will actually use it?

If they want to have professional baseball here and charge admission, they will need a PPA license with a public review process. (I know, it's a stretch to call the Sox professional.) If they invite the community to use it, then they could run into opposition in a few years when they need to tear it out. More likely is a temporary event: one game or series, maybe with one of the Sox' farm teams.

My prediction is the Sox and Related will host a round-robin of little league games in early October for 2 weeks and they along with Mayor Johnson will claim that anyone who doesn't care to manifest it into a permanent 2 billion-dollar stadium at public expense is a hater of children.

What a great place to watch 120 + losses. For all 100 fans. And this is coming from a Sox fan. Get real Jerry.

Aside from the developing story of this makeshift ballpark.

Does anyone know anything more about the status of the DPI groundbreaking? I see that they held contractor bids in the spring of this year in March -- with a deadline of April 16th.

I'm just astounded that this single building is taking as long as it is to happen. It's not like it's a 700 ft office building. Maybe someone can fill me in on any gaps with this development.

Just vast thickets of red tape.

DPI is a Capital Development Board project... delays are to be expected. It's very possible the bids came back way over budget.

It's also tied in with the CDOT-led project to extend 15th St from Clark St under the Metra tracks. There was $85M quietly appropriated for that project last year but no news since then.

Do they need to realign the metra tracks in order to move ahead with the 15th street extension?

Per @brendenmoore13 on Twitter:

“ Sent to me by a lawmaker: an invitation from developer Related Midwest to “An afternoon river tour to The 78 with White Sox greats.” This is the plot of land in the South Loop where the Sox want to build a new taxpayer-funded ballpark. Appears they’re pulling out all the stops.”

The poster indicates the event is for Monday September 16th:

Yes. The $85M is supposed to cover both projects, theoretically.

Actually funny you should mention the DPI because I just saw today on the Clark construction cam website while checking Thompson center that there is now a DPI cam.

I'm not sure if this is new or if some reason it popped up into view recently. If it's new I imagine that is a good sign for groundbreaking.

Nice catch! The camera archive only goes back to 9/5, so it's brand new.

I suppose this is also confirmation that Clark won the job. CDB is a state agency, so they don't need to get a building permit from the city. We won't get the usual tipoff for an awarded building permit. Good news for this project...

On a side note, there's a weird symmetry here with Lincoln Yards. LY has 1221 W Concord, The 78 has DPI. Both are science-oriented/lab buildings, they even look similar (Concord is more blocky, DPI is more bulbous but the facade systems are very similar). When complete, both will be the "first stake in the ground" for these megaprojects. Here's hoping the UI system is ready to put DPI to good use on Day 1, and it doesn't sit vacant like Concord...

Is this a new design? I hope it's not just a concept, it looks cool.

I'm assuming it will never happen though.
