yeah it gets real weird in here sometimes with some folks obsessed with the "perfect" tower. All good though, I'm here for the supertalls

Rainier Square Tower looks tall. The Austin tower looks like the shortest tall building I’ve ever seen before. All the horizontal stripes and blocking of two floors together make it look like a 500 foot building.
Totally agree on all your points. And if we are all expected to agree all the time, then we might as well join up and become a human centipede. I am not in it just for the sake of something being a supertall. I should never have to be at risk for rebuke here by simply saying that I don't really care for this design despite its unprecedented height for Austin especially compared to the Seattle version, and also the fact that this will be our tallest for the foreseeable future. I'm literally not that desperate and I've lived here and been waiting for almost 40 years. It's not what I was hoping for, and they could make this the tallest building in the universe and it wouldn't change my mind. The argument against this attitude is almost like saying you don't care if its a Yugo, because its at least a car, on a car enthusiast forum. Not that I am comparing this building to a Yugo, hopefully you get my point.

I'm good with criticizing architecture. I don't care how tall it is, though, that is a good reason to complain, not because you're a nimby, but because big and tall and ugly is not a good combo. I'm gonna be able to see this thing from my neighborhood in several places. I mostly like it, but there are some things about it that bug me.

I also think the renderings aren't showing it at its full height. I'm sure that's intentional to keep the height nimbys at bay.

I like the podium, I like the facade, I don't mind the crown, though, I think it's far from worthy for a supertall crown. What bugs me the most is the split in sections and the seeming non-symmetrical shape.

This development in the Toronto area bears some resemblance to ours as well.

No, the Empire Eau Du Soleil is much more elegant and grand than the proposed 98 Red River. The 98 Red River proposal is an ugly, disjointed project compared to that beautiful Toronto tower.

I don't like the design however I'm willing to give it a pass since it'll be so damn tall. Austin needs a couple tall towers like that in the skyline. Between this and 6XG I'm salivating. I love the height and mass of indeed tower to the skyline. It's amazing and was much needed in that area of downtown.

I would rather argue over the aesthetics of a first supertall before any other 500' footer, or so, to be honest.

That being said, I don't mind the design. I think it's nice and agree with the other who said that it might turn out a lot nicer than the rendering.

Fencing and branded scrim is up.

That’s a great sign.

Happy New Year Chuckleheads!

Are you referring to this? Per the Quincy webcam some scrim fencing went up last Wednesday, and it looks like some core sampling may have been done as well. But it's on the Block 190/99 Red River site.

I'm not a fan of that suburban Toronto project. That's a really bizarre design, and the base/podium is awful. It looks like it can't decide if it wants to be a building or a cruise ship. I don't know why, but suburban residential high rises tend to be horrible for whatever reason. Sometimes I think it's just density for the sake of density, but good design is overlooked.

The ground level interaction of this thing is going to be insane. I'm in love with this aspect of it.

The big white asymmetrical pillars don't bother me, but those crooked brown pillar walls on that 5-story overhang are triggering my OCD. They are pointlessly crooked and clash with the straight vertical brown detail on the ribbon glass on the main part of the building. Makes my eye involuntarily twitch in annoyance.

Yes! I'm OK with the tower, and think it will turn out better than the renderings. I'm excited about the height, but I am most excited about the podium and its interaction with the creek and trail!

Yep yep yep. Spot on. I’m 100% a supporter of the podium. It’s going to make that corner of the Creek really exceptional.

The podium is great, street side and park side. Shame about the tower. This thing is going to be so prominent due to both height and position in the skyline. Why does it have to be damn ugly?
