Hearing rumblings that the Suns arena renovation is basically a done deal. Approx $150MM from the City. Approx $100MM from the Suns.

The state of the Suns is so depressing and bleak. I'm not sure how they can make my situation better other than putting a good product on the floor. We are very comfortable in our suite with no suggested improvements to the concourse, service, food or anything else really.

The state of all the teams from the Phoenix metro area is depressing and will likely get even more depressing from now on. The Dbacks trading away Goldy, Cardinals can't seem to get a winning season, the Coyotes might be moving to Houston, and the Suns are still the same Suns from last year. Damn what did we ever do to deserve this crap? At least I can say that I was alive to see the Diamondbacks win the world series when I was a kid in 2001.

It's so bad right now. 30 teams in the league, why do we have to be the worst? I mean, the Mavericks are .500 right now, And the Nuggets are in first place! I really didn't see a difference in talent between those three teams when the year began, I thought we were better than both and are some how the worst :-(. Omg and man, losing Goldy, yeah, what did we do to deserve this? This is insane!

The Dbacks and the Cardinals have been decent in recent years. Jesus christ you guys are dramatic.

They traded Goldy but got a bunch for him. I think theyll be fine.

I didnt call the Suns decent. Not that I would know or care what basketball teams are decent.

The high-rises are pretty nice looking, but the layout is horrible. The proposal at Indian School could maybe work for something like HQ2 where Amazon would pretty much build their own micro-city. But there isn't even a reason to have those 2 office towers planned when even Block 23 has only signed 1 tenant so far. These towers should also all line up along Central and Indian School with the tallest at the corner, place the parking underground and extend your ground retail along the streets. Add some nice features to blend the development into the park for the tenants and then we have a good development. If the city sent the AC Hotel back to the drawing boards over a 43' setback, I'm thankfully sure they will be sending this one back for an overhaul.

The city of Phoenix and the Phoenix Suns have come to an agreement to make major renovations on the city-owned Talking Stick Resort Arena, one of the oldest arenas in the National Basketball Association.

The upgrades will cost $230 million, with the city paying $150 million and the Suns paying $80 million. Any additional costs will be paid for by the Suns. The renovations would start in 2019 and finish in 2021.
The renovation deal is contingent on being approved by the Phoenix’s City Council. The vote will be held Dec. 12. Details of the plans were first made public Thursday evening when they were published on the city of Phoenix’s website.

Phoenix will pay its end from the city’s Sports Facilities Fund, which is comprised of taxes primarily paid by tourists on hotel rooms and car rentals.

Also part of the deal, the Suns will build a practice facility somewhere within Phoenix. The city estimates that will cost between $25 million and $50 million, and the Suns will be responsible for funding that project. This practice arena is required by the deal to be completed by Oct. 1, 2021.

While proposed designs have not been released, the city outlined that renovations would include mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems. It also would include improvements to the roof, concourses, commissary, security system and technology infrastructure.

The Suns will agree to stay in the downtown Phoenix arena until 2037, with an option to extend its lease to 2042 as part of the deal. If the Suns decide to relocate before their lease is up, the team’s owners would have to pay the city $200 million.

During the next 12.5 years, the Suns and the city will pay $1 million and $2 million, respectively, every year into a fund that will be used for future renovations.

Glad to see the Suns staying. Talking Stick really anchors that area of Downtown and will be even more of a destination when Block 23 is completed.

Let's just hope that the D-Backs don't expect the same deal and try to strongarm Phoenix into paying for their upgrades.

They probably will, but their case is weaker. One of the arguments in favor of the City's decision to help fund arena renovations is the large number of non-basketball events held there. Chase Field is rarely used for anything other than baseball.

I think there would be tremendous pushback. In this case, Phoenix doesn't own Chase Field as it does with Talking Stick and also for the reasons exit2lef stated above. One could argue it hosts a bowl game, but I don't think that adds a significant enough economic impact to warrant Phoenix for paying for the upgrades. I looked up concerts and it looks like Chase has only hosted 3 stand-alone concerts ever (with Billy Joel coming in March)? Is that correct??

I suppose I mean the county, but I would bet public money will be used to keep the Dbacks in Chase.
