Are there any ped malls in Atlanta that have failed? The only ped malls I can think of-
Alabama St on top of Underground, which has its own set of problems, but I think that's unrelated to vehicle traffic. It's lined with active shops and restaurants.
Broad street for one block north of five points MARTA. It might look a bit sketchy, but it's a popular transit plaza area.
Several streets in Atlantic Station - very successful ped only streets.
Anyway, I don't think this really will be a ped mall per se. They're closing off one block, and it's a block that gets regularly closed anyway for various events. I'm guessing the city is just trying to improve traffic flow since it's such a weird intersection. If cars can't turn onto Broad, the Streetcar can't get stuck behind them.
And while you're right that a lot of pedestrian malls have failed, there also are quite a few really successful ones (Denver, Miami, Ithaca, Boulder, Santa Monica, New Orleans, Madison, Minneapolis, Boston, New York, Las Vegas, etc.). But again, I don't think that's what Atlanta is going for here. It's just closing off one block to ease traffic and increase pedestrian friendliness. There's already a huge pedestrian presence there thanks to GSU, office workers, tourists, and downtown residents, so I don't see how this could hurt anything. Nobody drives their car to the Jimmy Johns on that block.
