As someone who walks down to Broad st multiple times a week, every week, I'm very optimistic and excited about this plan. It's going to add to the vibrancy of the area, not detract.
Plus isn't it only closing the street between Luckie and Poplar? I don't think the street should be completely blocked to cars, but this would reduce the amount of cars passing through from Peachtree and make this already pedestrian friendly street even better for pedestrians. Also the tables are always packed so it really does need more seating space.

Agreed, which is actually the confusing part to me. I don't understand why they're only closing half the street. Anyone know? Is it to allow deliveries or something?

One thing it should do is help with traffic. That intersection (Peachtree, Luckie, Auburn, and Broad) is a bit of a mess, especially with the streetcar passing through in both directions. This will cut it down to a normal intersection instead of a mini five points, which will help pedestrians, cars, and the streetcar.

i frequent broad street quite a lot as a student; i've just seen so many pedestrian malls fail terribly that i'm worried the same thing might happen.

Comcast is going to have a 9 story tower at the new park. Also, the tower looks awesome...especially how it addresses the field. Some people can be negative, but this is shaping up nicely. The pics in the link are awesome!!!

Are there any ped malls in Atlanta that have failed? The only ped malls I can think of-
Alabama St on top of Underground, which has its own set of problems, but I think that's unrelated to vehicle traffic. It's lined with active shops and restaurants.
Broad street for one block north of five points MARTA. It might look a bit sketchy, but it's a popular transit plaza area.
Several streets in Atlantic Station - very successful ped only streets.

Anyway, I don't think this really will be a ped mall per se. They're closing off one block, and it's a block that gets regularly closed anyway for various events. I'm guessing the city is just trying to improve traffic flow since it's such a weird intersection. If cars can't turn onto Broad, the Streetcar can't get stuck behind them.

And while you're right that a lot of pedestrian malls have failed, there also are quite a few really successful ones (Denver, Miami, Ithaca, Boulder, Santa Monica, New Orleans, Madison, Minneapolis, Boston, New York, Las Vegas, etc.). But again, I don't think that's what Atlanta is going for here. It's just closing off one block to ease traffic and increase pedestrian friendliness. There's already a huge pedestrian presence there thanks to GSU, office workers, tourists, and downtown residents, so I don't see how this could hurt anything. Nobody drives their car to the Jimmy Johns on that block.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't this stretch basically closed for a large portion of the Streetcar construction?

Related group closed on the land for the 14th. St Project Feb. 28th. Expected to begin construction in the Third Quarter.

Whole Foods would anchor the second phase of the project and is seeking 60,000 sq feet on multiple floors.

Also the first phase is now 390 units and increase to 11,000 sq ft of retail.

YES!!! Really excited about this and the Eviva tower. These are my 2 favorites. 3rd quarter I am guessing is July - Sept, right?

So Drew Eckl & Farm is on the market for office space. I believe this means the West Peachtree apartment project by Trammel Crow is a go.

GOOGLE Maps certainly believes this news:

Does anyone know the exact footprint of the 2.2 acres (how close to Spring St it extends) and if any drawings of the towers has been shown?

Nice find Stairstars. Interestingly Google Maps notes Whole Foods is coming in 2017, but all prior publications have stated 2018.

I never realized that there are two phases to this project, I've only seen the rendering for the one highrise, where would the 2nd phase be on the property?

I walked by that site today along with many others. it's a pretty big lot, I can definitely see two towers and a grocery store there.

This is the first phase:

Across from Atlantic House along West Peachtree. No renders for Phase 2. This render also is based on original DRC when the building was to only have 6k sq. ft. retail. Now it has 11,000 sq. ft. so it is likely slightly different along the bottom.

I was clicking through the midtown alliance development tour and I noticed that Post Midtown Millennium is listed in the "Under Construction" section. I guess that means this one should be underway soon.

Atlanta's got an exciting amount of development happening now. Love that Related tower. Nothing special, but looks better than the Novare stuff, and taller than typical.
