If I'm not mistaken, at least during peak periods, an operator will board the back of the train at Bayview so the train is ready to turn around pretty much immediately once it reaches Tunney's.

I thought they added those stickers on the ground to tell people where to stand... I didn't see them at any station today.

Only at Lyon. I think the other stations are coming soon. I think Lyon has some bad crowding issues because it has really narrow platforms. I'm not sure why they didn't just arrange it like Parliament and Rideau to maximize platform space. The extra sets of stairs helps vertical circulation but it seems to be the quietest of the 3 tunnel stations, so I'm not sure why it has it.

Documents show confusion, misinformation during LRT delays

Tom Spears, Ottawa Citizen
Updated: October 24, 2019

Wrong PA announcements.

Wrong information on the overhead signs.

OC Transpo staff who “weren’t given enough time to move customers” when an LRT delay occurred.

And somehow, the wrong recorded announcement was able to “override” the correct one on the PA system.

These communications gremlins faced OC Transpo on the Tuesday of its first week of LRT service, during its first significant delay, which slowed the system for about 40 minutes. Details in an internal “sit rep” (situation report) were released through an access to information request after this newspaper could not get the information about that day’s LRT delay through regular channels.

That first breakdown (when a train had to be hauled away) happened while cross-town buses were still running their old service in parallel with the trains. Breakdowns and delays became more serious after Oct. 6, when buses were taken away and everyone had to take the trains.

Sarah Wright-Gilbert, a citizen member of the city’s transit commission, said communication surrounding delays has been a persistent issue for OC Transpo.

“It’s not good, to be honest,” she said in an interview.

She said it’s time for the transit system to work harder at keeping LRT passengers informed whenever things go wrong.

Wright-Gilbert said LRT service is usually “incredible” for her daily commute across the full length of Line 1. But she said passengers are too often left in the dark if there is a delay.

In September she was stuck on a stopped train “with absolutely no information from OC Transpo on Twitter.” (Transpo has since beefed up its use of the OCTranspoLive Twitter feed.)

She was delayed again this Monday, and the train operators “were giving only very generic information — ‘We are experiencing delays. We should be going in a couple of minutes’.” Eventually passengers were told to get off, and no one in Cyrville station could tell her what was happening either.

“And that’s my concern, when the rail operator is telling me one thing and then I’m getting zero information from the people who are the face of OC Transpo on the platform … And it’s not his fault. He didn’t have the information,” she said.

The PA told her there was a delay. The displays said the trains were “held.” That was all.

Wright-Gilbert was also disturbed by the contrast between the Sept. 17 “sit rep” and an email that general manager John Manconi wrote to Ottawa councillors the same day. She says the email “glossed over” problems that commissioners should have been told about.

It says in part: “Day 2 of this amazing new system was solid on multiple fronts … Overall we are exactly where we need to be, remembering that parallel bus service peels off on Oct. 6 making things even more precise while ensuring our number one priority is covered — our customers.

“On October 7 customers receive their final change and your $5.1 M bus improvement investment city wide which improves bus service along with the anticipated significant bus reliability from not having to run buses through the core/across the city.

“Bus service reliability will improve as planned.”

“I’m concerned,” Wright-Gilbert said. “We are told as commissioners that it is not our job to worry about operations.” But she argues that the commission’s role is to promote transit and to hold Transpo to account, which can’t happen when Manconi’s email “is not reflective of what happened that day. I’m concerned that the information in the email is not complete. We were not given a complete picture. And it’s clear from this sit rep that the communications were a serious issue.”

She is also annoyed that October’s monthly commission meeting was cancelled for lack of written reports to discuss. She feels it’s time to discuss the LRT, as well as bus reliability which many passengers perceive as declining.

On Wednesday of this week, the confusion around a delay continued. The official OC Transpo announcement said service was running, though passengers could only use the eastbound platforms at three stations — Hurdman, Lees and uOttawa.

On social media passengers complained they were not being told what was happening or how long delays would last.

Must be challenging when the platform is packed with rush hour commuters.

Update 10:15AM: Possible delays can be expected on O-Train Line 1 due to immobilized train at Tremblay. Updates to follow.

Second breakdown today.
I guess not a door issue, given that Tremblay is always empty.

Slippery platforms a danger, some LRT passengers say

Tom Spears, Ottawa Citizen
Updated: October 24, 2019

Some LRT stations have stairs and platforms that are dangerously slippery when wet, passengers are saying. And they warn that winter snow and slush won’t improve the situation.

A passenger named Lambert tweeted: “The floor at #ottLRT Lyon Station gets really wet and really slippery. I predict that there will be a few bruises, torn ankles and broken bones. I hope #ottcity (has) good insurance because Lyon station will be a paradise for injury lawyers.”

Kitchisippi Coun. Jeff Leiper says he is concerned and is dealing with OC Transpo about this emerging issue.

Many passengers report that Lyon and Parliament stations seem to have the slipperiest floors and stairs, possibly due to smooth tiles used there.

“Clearly, with the volume of social media stuff out there, there’s reason for concern. So I’ve raised it with OC Transpo,” Leiper said in an interview. (Eight councillors are members of the transit commission, but he is not one of them.)

Leiper said he has been taking the train fairly often, but has not personally seen slippery conditions. “But I’m not sure that I’ve been travelling when we’ve had those heavy rainfalls,” he said. “There’s enough discussion about it on social media that there seems to be an issue here that needs looking into.”

I heard the announcements but things ran very well between Tunney's and Parliament. Just a slight delay when pulling into Parliament. I decided to bike into town today and take the train for the last little bit. I found it quite easy and despite being pretty busy people were quite accommodating for me and my ride.

They are generally managing the delays pretty well now, they're just still happening to frequently though. It'll be a while yet until reliability is where it should be.

I had a curious situation on the way home from work. I was on a train where a set of doors didn't work. Rest of the doors operated fine and the train was in service. If they're able to isolate doors like that, why have they had so many issues?

I think it's because the door still needs to be physically shut correctly. It still takes time to close it manually, and if it can't be shut properly the train needs to be taken out of service.

The last couple of incidents didn't last very long, presumably only long enough so they could bypass the doors.

What annoys me isn't those people, it's the ones who board the train and immediately stop 5cm in even though there's plenty of room for them to keep going, blocking everyone else from getting on.

Winter jackets and backpacks can make it more challenging, but a knuckle to the spine combined with forward momentum is usually effective, the same as at the top/bottom of escalators ....

Yup; the old Ottawa Escalator (Revolving Door, Elevator, etc.) Manoeuvre.

The obliviousness of people in this town always astounds me when I get back here from almost anywhere else with these modern connivances.
