That's Jason Kenney. Alberta did petition for five games but there was never a rejection of that by FIFA and Vancouver was already back in the process when that petitioning letter was released. Edmonton was screwed, not so much that they weren't chosen but that it seems FIFA had no intention of ever opting for them and let them continue the process. Because Vancouver was allowed to weasel back maybe Edmonton knew the jig was up and made an impossible demand, we'll never know.

Even though I didn't like what Vancouver did (in the process) I know they'll make a great host and will be a good look for Canada (if they can keep those idiot protestors off the field).

Fight Club's rule #1:

Don't tell the IOC or FIFA what to do.

Rule #2:

There is no rule number 2.

Good point. I completely forgot the provincial government stuck their nose in like that. Shame they did, because it seems like Edmonton lost out through no error of their own.

I can guarantee you Edmonton was out long before that letter ever saw the light of day.

Yup.

While it is setting in and obviously a very competitive process, Edmonton should feel a bit robbed of this opportunity.

While I am happy to see Vancouver selected and from the get go I feel it is an obvious choice, I do wish Edmonton was given at least a couple matches.

Also seems odd that Toronto, despite being the largest city in Canada, and larger than many (most) on the list, has the smallest seat count by a large margin (only 30 000).

BC place seems to be the fourth smallest on the list (54 500) but is in similar company with many stadiums.

I’m not really in the camp of blaming the province for us not getting it but it is interesting how the city made such a deal about ensuring the provincial support was there. Now the mayor’s office has stated neither Ontario nor BC provided any official support commitments to the Toronto of Vancouver bid.

I don't what the excitement is about. FIFA has entered maximum grift phase with its new b.s. 48-team format. We're going to host 8 group stage games and a couple of knockout games. Everything from the quarter finals on will be in the U.S.
Does anyone remember where any early round games were played in any previous World Cup?
The U.S. offloaded the preliminary crap onto us and hogged the high profile matches.

What a scam!

And BMO Field is going to be the most tragic stadium - by far - of the lot.
Although that in itself may make it 'memorable'.

Toronto lives in your head rent free, it's hilarious. There is no "western bias" going. BMO Field is undeserving of hosting any of the games, and yet Toronto made the cut anyways. Based on the merits of each facility, it should have been Vancouver and Edmonton hosting.

Any other city with a 30K-seat stadium would have been denied. There has been a bit of a compromise here - let Toronto host but allow Vancouver to host more games because they obviously have the best facility. I’ve yet to hear anyone being upset with this arrangement?

So Toronto will spend $290 million hosting their games as per sportsnet and bc will spend $240 million. Not sure how much of these amounts will go to stadium improvements BC place seems fine not sure what it would need? Bmo expansion to 40,000 will be temporary seating they said as tfc and Argos obviously don't need that much.

For BC Place its mostly the real grass installation.
Security as well.
Maybe for staging the Draw.
Signage etc

No specific issue just that every World Cup stadium requires a lot of it.

it's a total racket. The cost I heard bandied about on Vancouver news was $250 million (wasn't clear if this was Canada-wide or BC only). If it is just for BC that's a quarter of a billion for 3-5 games! And our harebrained Tourism Minister was crowing about the expected hotel bookings while meanwhile it was pointed out we don't have enough hotel space unless more is built.

What a joke.

The new format does kind of suck, I much preferred the old 32 game format. Now teams can actually go 2-and-0 and out. Imagine following a high profile team like Spain/Germany or something and watching them - definitely not impossible - get knocked out in TWO games.

On the flip side, I think mathematically there is no group game that is "pointless" in that if you drop the first game, you can always win the second and still be into the next round. It would kind of suck to have bought tickets to a game with zero consequences which happens quite often to the final game of the group.
