This is the construction site of the interchange for the A-440 (autoroute Charest) and A-740 (autoroute Robert-Bourassa) in Quebec City. Work for the $260M infrastructure upgrade began in 2009 and should end next year. It is one of the busiest interchange in the city with approximately 200 000 vehicules using it each day. It is part of a plan to widen the A-740 to 3-lanes in each direction.

Do they plan on doing anything to the interchange of Henry IV (A 73) and Aut Charest (A 40-A 440), specifically the cloverleaf linking charest eastbound with henri iv nonrthbound?

Yesterday I was on a tour showcasing infrastructure improvements in Mississauga, Ontario (a city next to Toronto and larger than Detroit). One of the projects showcased was a 'lane doubling' of Highway 401 which included the expansion of an interchange with Hurontario Street, the 'main street' of Mississauga.

It wasn't the greatest day weather-wise but I did manage to take a bunch of pics of the construction work. You can view them here if interested: http://www.dropbox.com/sh/2e5lsmi0w5136v1/4-MyPtLO09

I just filmed that video in 2010. It's the A640 in the north shore of Montreal.

It's supposed to be a northern shortcut but unfortunately it isnt joining the A40 on any both sides. The new A30 will do that job in the south shore soon ( Next december )

Anyway, enjoy.

Opening this December I think. Pretty good that there will be a full autoroute bypass of Montreal Island for traffic going from Ontario eastwards to Quebec City and Atlantic Canada.

A30 looks like a fantastic piece of badly needed infrastructure for the Montreal region. A bypass of Montreal Island. Finally.

Oddly, it has to be one of the least-talked-about projects (even in Ontario and Atlantic Canada), even though it will have a really big impact on transportation between these two regions.

I don't mind driving the A20 through the Island but i'll admit the A30 looks promising for East-West traffic. A much needed bypass.

I believe I read something months ago about A30 being a toll road: is there any truth to that?

Just the new bridge over the St. Lawrence at the far western end of the highway. I think it will be $1,40 each way.

It is indeed in the plans of the MTQ. In fact, a big part of Henri IV will become a worksite as soon as the upgrade of the A-440 and A-740 interchange is finished (supposedly early 2013). On the following map, the red circle indicates the location where the A-73 reduces from a 6 to a 4 lanes highway. The goal of the project is to widen the highway to 3 lanes in each direction (excluding entry and exit lanes) starting near the interchange of Henry IV (A 73) and Aut Charest (A 40-A 440) all the way to the Félix Leclerc highway.

The bulk of the money for this project, which is estimated to cost $400M, will be geared towards widening the interchange of Henry IV (A 73) and Aut Charest (A 40-A 440):

Nice! That is a good looking project! Just wondering though, will there not be clearance issues with that bridge crossing the St Lawrence?

Nope. If you look at the map of the project, you will notice that the new highway will cross waterways on two occasions. A first bridge, built over the Beauharnois Canal, will have a clearance of 38m, enough for ships to pass under it and continue on the south side of the island. The second bridge doesn't require such a high clearance because bigger ships will not pass through that side of the island.

Any plans to eliminate the remaining traffic lights on highway 20 between Vaudreuil and Ste. Anne de Bellevue? That stretch through Dorion (possibly the ugliest suburb in the Montreal region) is truly atrocious. Many people make the mistake of continuing from points west to Montreal via the 20. Seems as though one or both of the bridges linking Ile Perrot and Montreal Island are always under reconstruction.
