December was a bad month for dead-tree readers: Maison de la Presse Internationale newsstand on Bank closed at the start of the month; Argosy Books, one of the few used bookshops left in town, on Dalhousie, closed at the end of it.

Salem Storehouse on Merivale is also closing.

Also noticed Vranjes Denture Clinic, next to David's Tea in the Glebe, is now closed.

And, a little further south, the temporary location that Whole Foods set-up seems to have been vacated, windows papered up, and an application for a liquor license placed in one window.

Finally. What a waste of a good storefront location.

The receptionist at the eye exam clinic (besides Vezina Optician) in Merivale Mall told me today Marshall's is moving in and they will have to relocate to the other side of the mall.

About time the mall has an anchor tenant (outside of SportChek) as I saw many boarded-up storefronts. Good location but too much competition from the stores fronting on Merivale. Traffic on Merivale will be even worse. I've been to the Marshall's in Trainyards and it's nothing special really but this will surely draw the Winners crowd as it's practically across from each other.

Is the mall interior being demolished as a result?

Not 100% certain but considering the size of a typical Marshall's store (picture Winners), I am sure renovations will be fairly extensive.

While waiting for my dad to finish his eye exam, I kept hearing booming noise and I thought it's the *frostquake* but the receptionist told me renos work is under way.

This will help spruce things up for sure as you have SportChek on 1 end, Farm Boy on the other end with Rockwell's and TD and Marshall's in the middle.

This is good news. I frequent the Marshall's at the Trainyards. It always has better selection and higher end goods than any Winner's, even though the store concept is nearly identical.

It's just a guess on my part but I think they will do the same as Heron Gate mall and turn it into a "box store" type of setup.

The two stores, along with Homesense, are owned by the same company - TJX Canada (which I believe is owned by TJ Maxx USA). They will essentially be competing against each other but will probably both continue to do well. The Lady and I shop Winners and Homesense a lot and I as well find that Marshalls does carry the slightly higher-end merchandise, and their store (Trainyards) has been significantly cleaner on the inside compared to Winners.

I drove by Westboro earlier today and saw signs for a Nestle Toll House coming soon. It will occupy the ground floor of 1 of those condos near Island Park.

There are still quite a bit of retail spaces for rent on the ground floor in those condos, I am a bit surprised as the location is good with lots of visibility and those condos have been completed for more than a year now, closer to 2 years?

After 22 years, the Coles bookstore at St Laurent has abruptly closed.

David's Tea is now open at Rideau. It was quite busy opening day. It should have been a bit larger.

Almost all the Otawa Dunkin Donuts closed a some years back. Many of them were converted into Tim Hortons.

I'm trying to remember this location. Where along Montreal rd was it located?

Some time ago Dunkin Donuts withdrew completely from Canada maintaining only four stores in Quebec. No idea where those are.

Tims had a huge expansion in Quebec a few years back and gobbled all those DD's up. I think there are like 3 on the island and 1 somewhere to the east (near Beloeil).

Mexx Canada liquidating stores before closing doors the end of February, eight in Ottawa

The Canadian Press ~ OBJ
Published on January 14, 2015

Insolvent fashion retailer Mexx is liquidating its 95 stores in Canada by the end of February.

By the end of this week, 25 locations and 250 jobs will be gone.

In addition to 1,700 employees at its retail operations, the company has 85 at its head office and distribution centre, which will close in March.

There are eight stores in Ottawa and one in Gatineau.

Mexx Canada, a Montreal-based company that operates in eight provinces, filed for bankruptcy protection late last year. It owes creditors $113.4 million, mainly to related companies Mexx Europe and Lifestyle.

Restructuring efforts in Canada and the Netherlands have failed to find a buyer that would keep the retailer open for business, even on a smaller scale, says bankruptcy trustee Gilles Benchaya of Richter Advisory Group.

Like other Canadian fashion retailers, Mexx has faced increased competition from U.S. brands that entered the market.

Sony to close all its stores in Canada

Vito Pilieci, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: January 15, 2015, Last Updated: January 15, 2015 12:35 PM EST

Sony Corp. will close all 14 of its Sony Stores across Canada as the company continues to struggle to reshape its business.

The company made the announcement on Thursday in a memo to the employees of its stores, one of which is located here in Ottawa at the Bayshore Shopping Centre, telling them that the stores will cease operations within the next two months.

The company confirmed the news in a statement released to The Citizen.

“Over the next 6 to 8 weeks we are closing our Sony Stores in Canada and will redirect all of this business through our national network of Sony retailers, our online store … as well as through our Sony-trained Telesales team,” read the statement. “Our network of Sony authorized retailers offer a full range of Sony products and will be supported by our in-store Merchandisers and Product Trainers on an ongoing basis in order to ensure that our past customers have continued access to knowledgeable Sales consultants who can support their ongoing Sony electronics needs.“

The company’s news came on the same day that Target announced it would be shuttering all of its retail stores in Canada.

Sony did not say how many jobs are affected by the decision.

The closure comes as Sony is struggling to reshape its business amidst years of losses. For the current fiscal year which ends in March, the company is estimating a $1.9 billion (U.S.) loss.

Within the last year the company sold its Vaio personal computing business and spun out its TV manufacturing operations.

It is now reported to be considering exiting the TV business entirely. The company is also considering options for its lacklustre cellular phone division.
