Infact one article mentioned the building made room for another tower to the west, but honestly I think the block could easily support two more towers, one the west and north. Of course there would be demo then.
Thanks, Kevin, you are corrrect, of course. I guess I should have looked at my own model before asking.

Greetings and thank you for the update. Great news!

Just out of curiosity, who's providing the interim construction loan for the project?

Also, when will the tower be complete? We know it's slated for sometime in the later part of 2009...However, do you have a better idea as to a specific quarter, or even better, a particular month?

Don't mean to bug you, but would you be able to elaborate on the possible (slight) change in the buildings design (specifically the crown) and will this add or subtract any height to the tower.

Thanks for the warm welcomes. Unfortunately, I don't have that information. I was just curious as to when it would start and she sent me that reply. I love the new sleek design. Although the other with a crown was impressive. Reminded me of a cowboy hat.

I have to say I don't care for the change. I really liked the "halo" around the top. Looks unfinished without it. I'm bummed.

^ Me too. I loved the crown. Had fun modeling it with my Legos and thought it looked really nice. We've never had anything like that before so it would have been awesome. The building looks naked without it.

Hey guys!

I was in town this past weekend and took a stroll downtown looking at block 21, the Austonian site, as well as the Altavida construction.

When did they breakground on the Altavida? I guess I hadn't been paying much attention because I was surprised how far along that was. I remember when the crane went up, but had they started digging before that?

I just looked on urbanaustin.org and they say it started September of last year! Maybe I was just oblivious these past few months or so that I have been interested in the constuction going on around town...

Yeah, they broke ground in September. It's funny, when thinking of "the list" in my head I've actually forgotten about Altavida also. I guess the crane for it kind of hides there being huddled up next to 100 Congress. It'll start to make its impact soon enough, though.

When you guys talk about the halo on the Austonian, to what are you referring to?

I haven't seen the crown change too drastically lately...

Go to the very first page of this thread, scroll down to the 2nd post made by me, there's a list of renderings for all the highrise projects. Find the one for The Austonian, (listed under 'approved'). Click on the thumbnails to see a larger pic.

Wow this is first I've seen or heard of the halo being removed, what a shame! Why would they omit what possibly could have made it iconic, I was very excited to see the lighting scheme with the crown arranged with the ringed edge. Is this a money issue? I am looking at their site and the building feels unfinished. It pains me knowing what could have been!

That's unfortunate, this is the first that I have heard of this as well. Looking at the new rendering, that steel overhanging made a big difference!

One thing, though, the crown/penthouse does look taller. I'll have to send them an email tomorrow to find out what's up.

Oh! Okay, Yeah, I thought that overhang was what you guys were talking about, but I just hadn't seen the new renderings on the Austonian website with it removed.

On the photo gallery section, it looks like the whole "Fitness Skylounge" thing is removed as well, but they haven't modified the floorplan section...

Also it appears to only have three penthouse floors in the new rendering, while the floorplan still shows four.

Maybe we will still see something up there besides the top floor of the penhouses, straight to crown.

Or maybe the crown is where the new skylounge is supposed to be?

Off subject here, I spent the night with friends on Lake Travis and while driving out and coming back today I was nearly shocked at all the construction going on while driving on 2222. Jeez I had not been out there for a year and now there is businesses and homes covering the roadway where possible, especially near 620. I think I saw a Target attached to a HEB on the north side near 620. I inquired of my buddy what will this look like in 20 yrs? That road will need to be expanded to the point of being similar to an expressway. My friend who lives near Hudson Bend says after 7 yrs he still isn't used to the daily work commute into town. He misses living in alandale, but his beautiful 3k sqft house must make it bearable.

I don't like the change to the Austonian crown either, that's really disappointing. Like most of you guys said, it would have been much more unique if they had left it alone.

Thats a bummer, regarding the Austonian crown... I too loved the 'ring'... very distinctive.

Also...FYI. There is an extensive special section on our emerging downtown Condos in this week's print edition of the Austin Business Journal. Its a must-see... be sure to check it out (Barnes and Noble, Randall's, etc)

It looks like what happens when someone shaves their eyebrows off. They look completely different, and not for the better.
