I think you probably nailed in Potgut. That piece of evidence will be telling for the investigation. How the hell did you catch that, and so quick!

What are the current URLs for the tower cameras? The old URLs haven't worked for awhile. Thanks!

Bummer to see the setback. Read the operator fell 20 ft and was seriously injured. Hope the operators able to make a full recovery. That’s quite the fall.

Astra drill and Convexity

Today I noticed you can see the Convexity site from the Regent St. parking garage.

If there is a few month delay for Astra, this could but both Astra and Convexity rising at the same time on nearly the same rate. This is only based on the look of Convexity being approximately 2 months behind Astra.

Looking at concretecole's first photo more closely (see below), it looks like the drill was completely retracted when it fell. Makes sense since it probably wouldn't have tipped over if the drill was in the ground.

Given this, my guess is that they were in the process of moving it when it fell.

I'm not sure what the weather was like last night in SLC, but down in Utah County we had some pretty intense wind gusts. I'm wondering if that may have played into it, as well?

They could likely have a new drill pretty quickly, hell they may even repair this one on site. It's the investigation that will take a while. Hopefully it's something trivial that can easily be remedied. As someone who has operated heavy construction machinery, big machines like this punish any mistake with death, I'm very relieved to hear that the operator is alright.

Edit: I'm looking close at the pictures, the drill appears bent. It'll need to be removed.

It was calm (no wind) and lightly raining. I was actually on top of Liberty Sky looking down at the active Astra site about 25 minutes before this happened. I left and drove right under where it fell about 15 minutes before, which is crazy to think about.

Here are some pictures from the area that I took at various times yesterday:

Looking at these picture it didn't appear to have it's outriggers deployed when it collapsed. I agree that it was probably being moved when the incident occurred. The site has been muddy all spring, that definitely contributed. They'll probably be required to grade the areas the coring drill will be used and properly use the outriggers. Interested to see how quickly they can get this coring drill off the worksite.

Looking back at all my pictures, I have seen them drilling with the outriggers properly out whenever I passed by.

Doesn't seem to work, unfortunately. It's been stuck on that image for a week.

Try clearing your browser cache or opening it in an incognito tab. I see a tipped over coring drill.

Nice pictures Atlas! Hopefully Liberty Skys pool furniture is either anchored or brought in before big wind events lol. Very nice view from the pool.

Looks like the drill just barely missed the Pawn Shop. Can you imagine the headlines this morning if it had smashed into the Shop!

Beautiful pictures Atlas!! Here's the latest update from Kier on Sugar Alley. Somewhat self-explanatory on the delay of that other side. Looking at this rendering I can see why they would be using the steel framing on the side to the right.

The only was a commercial building permit that was filed for the site: https://citizenportal.slcgov.com/Cit...ncyCode=SLCREF

I don't know if that is still the plan, but it has a description saying:
"58 Unit Multi-Family Residential Apartments. 5-on-1 Wood Framing Over Podium, Type IIIB Construction"

I have never seen a rendering or anything for the site though.

It seems weird to demo two historic 3 floor buildings just to build a small 6 floor building. It doesn't sound like a good trade up, at least to me. The building could be amazing, who knows. Here's hoping.

Does it? Seems on brand for Salt Lake.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. I seem to recall that Architecture Belgique is the architect on the project, so I'd expect something pretty standard-looking. They did SkyHouse and Central Station Apartments, for example. The most interesting thing they've ever designed is the forthcoming Sugar Town (Snelgrove) Apartments.

Thank goodness I was wondering what was going on. This is probably my favorite multifamily apartment building design we've seen in Salt Lake. I wish the units were for purchase.
