My poor man's conspiracy is that this memo leak was intentional by the BC Cons. Don't be fooled by the (accurate) assessment that a plurality of Canadians don't care about this and will roll their eyes at the gimmick. I think it's to provoke a reaction from BC NDP, and the "ruling class" at large, so they can point to the federal government and their own antiquated use of the word Indian.

This would be a silly assertion until you see that every play by the populist right is like this: public inveigh with some kind of obviously inflammatory rhetoric, and then when the inevitable consternation and criticism swells upward, mock the pearl clutching of the woke establishment to gin up your base on TikTok/Western Standard/Rumble/etc. It's tried and true.

I think that's a little too much 3D chess for the BC Cons; anything more complex than cheap trolling is beyond them.

They also seem to have forgotten that a large chunk of their party and voters are Indians from India. At best it's confusing... at worst it starts to give CentreBC several defectors.

I have not once in my life heard of an Indo-Canadian person being upset about the usage of "Indian" to refer to Indigenous Canadians because it's "their" term. Frankly, I never even hear Indo-Canadians refer to themselves as "Indian". I'm Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali, etc. Never I'm "Indian". Do you think Indo-Canadians hear someone talk about the Indian Act and think, "Oh is this about me?"

Right now I think you sound like the people that went, "The Hispanic vote could never go to Trump, look at how he talks about Mexicans!"

Did I say that Indians would never vote Conservative (they clearly do as of one election ago), or did I say that there's bound to be at best confusion and at worst outrage?

Let's say the Caucasian side of the party decides it wants to grab more of the "Indian vote" in Surrey, or accuse "Indian reservations" of stealing BC back; even if all of said Punjabis/Gujaratis/Bengali/etc voters figure it out by context, will all the MLAs and campaigners spreading the message do the same? They're almost surely going to get some wires crossed over the next two years and beyond, just so they can grandstand right now.
