Well it's nothing new look at every other downtown in the US that suffered from "urban decay" SF at least is surrounded by a lot of wealth so it's probably better off than the downtowns that just had middle income families moving to the suburbs.

San Francisco is a lost city. I am happy having visited a couple times many years ago but never again. Visiting Tenderloin and Oakland was very sketchy.

Interestingly also Portland is losing thousands of residents, but nobody knows why.

It's a very similar story to San Francisco. Having a third of the office space empty doesn't help. Rising crime, and a huge homeless population, (from 3,800 in 2015, to 6,297 in 2023, (4,000+ unhoused, 900 more than a year earlier) and a stagnating economy (in the city, rather than the region) suggests lots of out-migration to work from home, or a switch to hybrid work. It looks like some people moved to Vancouver (Clark County) where house prices have risen 6.4% in the past year, but are still $32K less than Portland, while Portland has fallen 6%.

For anyone who ventures down to Bellingham, Daiso has just opened in the same shopping plaza as Safeway and Panera Bread.

Article says it's in Hastings-Sunrise.. I've never come across it.

EDIT: Actually just read another article about the house and they mentioned some more details on the neighbourhood and I found it on Google Maps. Do you think it's okay to post the address?

I found it too; The pictures in the article make it abundantly obvious where the house is, so I don't think I'll post the address. It's certainly not anywhere I would regularly go, I'll say that much.

According to the Daily Hive report, there were several businesses damaged or destroyed in the blaze: Nando’s, Deer Island Bakery, Yummy Yoghurt, Westside Vapes, Sandy Farm Market, and Pho Tan Vietnamese Restaurant.

ah that's too bad.

in other news, the train should be running for Christmas!

Vancouver's Stanley Park train to return for first time in 4 years
Train last ran in 2019, faced bevy of problems ranging from mechanical issues to coyotes

Akshay Kulkarni · CBC News · Posted: Nov 06, 2023

The Stanley Park train, a beloved Vancouver attraction that has been kept off the tracks since 2020 due to a range of issues, is set to return for the holiday season in 2023.

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim announced the miniature train would return at a news conference at Stanley Park on Monday, saying the train's return would not have been possible without donations from a range of charitable foundations.

Tickets for the attraction are set to go on sale Thursday, according to the Vancouver Park Board, and the train itself will begin running on Nov. 30.

Officials cautioned that the train still has to pass an inspection before it can run again, but said they were confident enough to start selling tickets Thursday on the park board website.

Great to see the ABC Parks Board members correcting yet another error from the previous administration.

What did the new Park Board do? I have not been following the train saga too closely aside from costs.

Was it going to be scrapped if they didn't get sufficient donations by the end of the year?

EDIT: Holy crap $650K! And $500k coming from donations.

Parks board hasn't done anything substantive yet; They just have a dedicated pool of money to work with now. (They would have had more if they weren't spending money tearing down infrastructure, but I digress )

You weren't complaining about the lack of funds to repair the train when they were building said infrastructure?

A bit odd that this came from donations not City or PB budget, but whatever. Keep track of who donated and relevant council decisions in the future I guess.

Maintenance issues for the train weren't publicly revealed until last year, a full year after the bike lane was installed, but I guess you didn't look that up.

I'll be in Vancouver from Jan 21-25 for the AME Roundup and am considering staying a few extra days after. I was wondering whether you guys had any recommendations on things to do while I'm there. I don't ski or snowboard and I'm quite introverted, so bar/nightlife stuff isn't really my sort of thing.

Right now I'm planning on renting a mountain bike and riding at Seymour - it's obviously not prime-season, but weather will be a lot nicer than at home that time of year. Regardless, it's going to be highly weather dependent, so it's not something I can really count on doing. In a similar vein, renting a bike and riding around the sea wall/exploring Stanley Park sounds nice.

On the more cultural end, I'm interested in the Bill Reid Gallery, and would have loved to check out the Museum of Anthropology at UBC (closed until June, unfortunately). I'm more broadly interested in natural history/geology as well.

Any restaurant recommendations would be welcome too - we're staying at the Fairmont Waterfront, and likely will want to stick to something more easily reached from downtown (ie. walking/transit).
