The entire tournament has sold 885 000 tickets. Well short of their 1.5 million goal. Hopefully Canada and the US advance far into the tournament and they can push well past the 1 million mark.

Once people know who will be playing where for elimination games, you should see sales pick up.

For comparison, the U20 Mens world cup in Canada played the same amount of games and sold 1.2 million tickets for an average of 23 000 per game. I think the 1.5 mil target was always too high and 1.2 mil should be the new goal.

^ I didn't think it was the most fan-friendly tournament ever in terms of scheduling and ticket sales. Many of the games are in the afternoon when people are working, and all I ever heard about tickets were multi-game packages. I didn't want to buy a tournament package, or even a 2-pack for the afternoon and evening game. I just wanted an evening game ticket, but I never heard anything about it so I didn't bother.

I am marginally interested in the tournament but not so much that I'd go out of my way to get ticket info. They kind of overlooked fans like me.

Why is it in June and not July? In order to avoid conflicts with CFL games?

I might have taken my kids to a game but June is the end of school, exams, end of activities, etc.

Not very practical.

The World Cup is always starts in June. Mens and Womens.

But another reason is because the Pan Ams are in July and no way they were going to host both games at the same time.

A poster on another forum mentioned ticket sales would have been higher had Toronto or Hamilton hosted games. That would definately boost sales as Moncton is apparently doing the poorest in terms of ticket sales. If the Pan Am committee allowed it, Toronto or Hamilton would have been hosting instead of Moncton and more tickets would have been sold.

Fun fact: I can't remember what it was in the context of, but I recall that around 12 years ago one of the Edmonton sportswriters mentioned that consideration was being given to expanding Commonwealth to accommodate some event that Edmonton was chasing at the time by wrapping the upper deck around the south end to push capacity up to 80,000 (it was 60,000 at the time with the old red/orange seats).

It never happened but it's interesting to consider what a monster of a stadium it would have been. I guess it can't happen now - at least not fully - with the training centre in the way.

Thanks for the tip re the single games, Cold. I hear the games involving the USA are all sold out but maybe I can snag tix to another one or two matches.

If anything they should cut out the end zone seats at common wealth. The stadium a itself is still way to big. 45k with patio seating at the ends expandable for the big events would be perfect. Its way to big today.

Yeah, I agree. Going up to 80,000 or whatever the end result would have destroyed the atmosphere at Esks games. Somehow CWS seems to work even when the place is 2/3 full, unlike Skydome where you relaly notice it if the seats are more than 1/4 empty. Better in the long run that it didn't happen.

No way jose. 60K was a bit too big, but 52K now is great. Edmonton just needs to make sure it's at least 75% full for games and the atmosphere will be great... I've been in there for sellout and near sellout crowds, and the atmosphere is fantastic.

Commonwealth actually seats 56K with the new seats. the 52K figure is the capacity of the World cup because some seats have been converted to media spots and others aren't available.

And yes she is a beauty. Just keeps getting better with age.

Agree that the start times for the women's world cup are awful...at least in Winnipeg. No weekend games and no games starting in the evening...even the one game that is not part of a doubleheader.

Looking at the ticketmaster for Winnipeg Stadium, it appears 4 of the matches are sold out (these are parts of doubleheaders involving the US), the last double header with one of the games involving Germany appears to have sold around 20,000 and the Ecuador vs. Japan match I would guess has sold around 17,000.

so 4 matches * 33,000
2 matches * 20,000
1 match * 17,000

Works out to an average of 27000 per match (counting the doubleheaders as two matches as you are paying more for those than the lone single match). That's a pretty good number considering the start times for these matches and Winnipeg's lacklustre support for soccer in the past. I don't remember what the Winnipeg Fury drew per game but it couldn't have been more than a few thousand.

I've been to many Eskimos games over the years when the bombers were in town. It feels empty when theirs 40k in the stadium. For everyday CFL use 45k would still be to big as they don't attract those numbers anymore. Plus its usually the end zone seats that are empty to begin with. Its very rare that commonwealth ever sold out at 60k in the last 2 decades 42-45k with standing room and party decks for the Eskimos would be ideal. Expandable to 50-55k for GC's, big concerts, Hockey games ect. Edmonton doesn't need a Stadium with 50,000 permanent seats for the 1 or 2 events it hosts a decade that needs that amount of seating. It needs a 40,000 seat stadium that will sell out 8 CFL games a year and can expand 20,000 seats for those huge events events. Endzone seats are Terrible to begin with but with commonwealth they are a special kind of garbage because they are 35 feet from the field. Covered in tarps almost always....get rid of them. Put in decks in the end zones. especially the jumbo trim side. you could make a great big concourse their and put some kind of rum hut thing the way Winnipeg does it. would definitely close up the feild a bunch make it feel alot more intimate
