According to a (front page) article in the Spec today, the Scottish Rite on Queen will soon be opening its private dining room to the public. From the newspaper's brief description of the menu, it will be fine dining (how could it be anything else with the way it looks?). Pretty neat addition to the restaurant scene.

Have any building permits been filed? I've been curious about how high they will go here.

Also anyone know if the renovated part beside it will have offices or apartments on the upper floors?

I believe the building/land is owned by the same people who renovated the buildings on either side of it. I think they're planning to make a connector building between the two with a courtyard or something. Don't think it'll be a huge condo or anything.

Tried State & Main today at Upper James and Rymal and it was excellent. My meal was about $13 for veggie burger, jalapeno mashed potato and cornbread. Good pricing.

Keep forgetting to post this... There are signs up at the old Boo's Bistro. It's going to be "Nellie James Too."

The latest in the Mex-I-Can saga...

They've been closed since July in Hess Village for "renos", and yesterday they announced:

I think they will thrive at Hess Village, with all the partiers needing their late night snack.

I bet being forced out of the James St location will show to be a blessing in disguise.

I thought the Hess Village location was a stopgap until they could find something permanent downtown. Renting someone else's kitchen couldn't have been ideal.

I really hope they do reopen downtown. I saw them checking out the place next to BMO where the bake shop just closed unfortunately didn't have time to stop.

depends.

theres already smokes poutine. hot dog vendors. vida la pita. lots of pizza shops. burrito boys.

also if its a nightclub and restaurant they can just let other ppl in from other clubs to purchase food if they're over capacity.

is it going to be a sitdown restaurant where the kitchen closes early? or will it be more of a smokes poutine type place open till 4am

Great news! The Kelsey's location at Main at Longwood appears to be closed!

This is the closest restaurant to McMaster Innovation Park- something better (by which I mean absolutely anything) is needed. Maybe we'll see a restaurant (I mean anything- anything would do) better replace it.

From what I gather, Angel Avalos (the son of Mex-I-Can’s founders) opened the Hess Village location — initially referred to as the Mex-I-Can Food Cartel, now rebranded as Agave — and was said to have been in negotiations to open two additional locations just three months ago.

Closer to downtown, Veronica Sanchez (Mex-I-Can’s head chef) is apparently opening Mesa Authentic Mexican Cuisine at 255 James North.

So in theory there's potential for four Mex-I-Can spin-offs. That's about $26 per restaurant.

The former Mex-I-Can building at 107 James was of course found to be structurally unsafe and from what I could see over the last couple of weeks, it seemed to come down like it was made of tortillas.

Lou Dawgs (Toronto BBQ place) is opening up in Hess Village.

I've been a few times in Toronto as it's right by my office and I think they're very overrated but they could potentially do well in Hess. Good luck.

Also I saw this place during Supercrawl. Looks like a less grimy version of Work inside (think Portuguese bar with zero effort put into renos), but I haven't seen or heard anything from them since so maybe there's more changes afoot before they officially open.

which spot in hess village are they taking up shop?

I see they only have 2 locations in Toronto. I wonder why they took the plunge in Hamilton.

Menu prices look reasonable. It appears to be a sit down restaurant? Kinda reminds me of Memphis Fire BBQ in Winona.

Wonder if they'll be open late with a fast serve type counter for the late night bar crowd.

Not sure where exactly in Hess. Based off the pictures I assume it'll be on George.

They're definitely going after the same drunk crowd that Smoke's is catering to.
