BTW -- I'm going to be posting a story over on blogdowntown this evening with interior construction shots, but just a quick tease right now that Ed and I got a tour of the ImaginAsian Center yesterday and I think it's really going to come out looking great. Very tentative opening date is now mid - late October, and it sounds like ImaginAsian plans to do an A-list style kickoff.

If you missed the renders we posted on that project, you can find them here:

Only problem is if I & most everyone else had nothing but pollyanna type tudes here, where nothing bad, negative or sad were ever spoken, then this forum would end up being about as informative as a meeting of the stepford wives HOA.

As for the kind of postings that I don't like seeing, many of them are typical of what I'll come across at esp a forum like SSC, where a new message on a thread all too often leads to not much more than: "when is that going to be built?", "Is that 30 stories or less?", "I don't know about that", "I wish it were nicer", "how can they do that?!", "what are you talking about?!", "I knew that!", "I drove by there last wk", "I think it should be a different color".

Well..we are all cautiously optismistic about the projects downtown. Espically the major ones like Grand Ave and Park 5th. But we have to be paitent and not rush. The more you rush, the slower things become. A positive outlook will result in positive rewards.

Lord have mercy I sound like Steven Segal.

I'm still a bit confused on how the new ordinance would affect future developments on the large surface parking lots in South Park. The LA Times article mentions that the, "new rules encourage developers to build high-rises without leaving space between the buildings." Well, I assume they're not talking about infill projects like Hanover because building wall-to-wall style is the only way to go when it comes to infill development, unless there's an alley between it and the adjacent building. Would the new rules allow for partial development of large scale parcels like the Moinian Group's LA Central site?

Wow! How exciting for DTLA to get this specific theater! I believe it'll be one of the first ones of its kind. Another "Only in DTLA" to add to the list!

Is that Zhang Ziyi on the screen there in the cross section rendering?

Hey guys, I just realized something....what's the status of the Angel's Flight Redevelopment?
Is it going to be torn down?

^ No, Mr. Welbourne is still securing funding for the project. About a year ago, Jan Perry had brought up a motion to the Council to consider taking Angels Flight away from Mr. Welbourne and putting the project into the hands of the MTA. But that didn't go thru because he was so adamant about finishing the project himself. But it's stalled and stalled and stalled and who the hell knows when this project will finally open!!! I'm getting so impatient!

^ That's a pretty damn good guess, LA420. The Southern California Earthquake Data Center shows a magnitude 4.5 quake this morning at 12:58 a.m. 4 miles NNW of Chatsworth. I'm actually glad to have little shakers like this that cause little to no damage, and relieve the stress of the faults. It's those 7's and 8's that can really suck.

I wouldn't worry about the highrises being built downtown. A 4.5 that far away isn't strong enough to cause any serious structural damage. At the very worst I would expect it to delay these projects a few days as they carefully inspect for any damage, no matter how minor.

The interior shots are up now:

It's hard to get a real sense of the space while everything's still just framed, but I really like how they've laid things out. The lobby should be very airy, and should push a lot of light onto Main at night.

LA Central (from Curbed LA):

Quote:
Oh, happy days. Lovely renderings from a loyal reader:

"Here are renderings of the LA Central development that is going to the City Planning Commission today.... large mixed-use project...across the street from the Staples Center....860 condo units, 222 hotel rooms (a fancy schmancy boutique hotelier), sit-down and quick serve restaurants galore, several large and small retail spaces (with high hopes for a Mac store) and a supermarket (rhymes with schmole schoods). [ED: WHOLE FOODS!] It also has two paseos to chop up the large block and a big plaza with some cool landscape features along Figueroa. The first person to complain that it isn't pedestrian-oriented can eat it.

Yeah, go eat it complainers! More fabulous picture love after the jump...

looks good, but I wish at least one of the towers had the bulk of its mass on Fig.

Glad to hear the mid-block paseos are intact. It was hard to tell from the earlier massing render.

Looking at the renderings with Jardin included, I wish Jardin was taller!

LA Central should really compliment the Ritz Carlton/Marriot really well. Even though prefferably all these projects should be ped-friendly, since most of the people going to the restaurants, etc. are going to have driven there to go to the Staples Center, this is one of the few projects that can get away with being more auto/travel oriented. Glad to hear that it includes a hotel, the region around the Staples Center is soon gonna be a prime tourist spot.

The taller tower looks to have a penthouse with a 360 view. Sweet.

^^^ So I don't get bitched at later, I'm ok with the fact that it's not more pedestrian oriented.
