It does look like it's slowing down a bit... and in the mid-1800s people couldn't move west fast enough.

This is true of every big city. Most people move to the city when they get out of college. Obviously, most Americans do not plan to remain in the city for their entire lives. So it would stand to reason that a significant percentage of the young people in a city that is one of the largest magnets for college graduates would plan to move away at some point.

Of course for every young NY resident that leaves, another will take their place.

Or Phoenix, or Atlanta, or Dallas, or Seattle, or Denver. It's got nothing to do where population is moving and everything to do with the fact that like 90% of single college graduates move to central cities, while only like 10% of Americans living cities. Obviously a significant number of people plan to live in the city for a while and, wherever that city happens to be, move once they get married and start a family. And you can't blame them, because it's very expensive to raise a family in NY and many other major cities.

It's roughly following the path of Route 66.

I wonder how sharply and how much in a southerly direction, it will drift?

I see the center of population stabilizing right around the Kansas/Missouri/Oklahoma/Arkansas junction. There's just too many people in the North and East for it to keep going much farther.

@ Pesto, the official 2010 numbers for Salvadorans will probably be released at the end of the month or this summer. There's a high possibility that the population is over 500,000 but I don't know for sure of course.

@ brickell, thanks for the information. I was guessing that it was a combination of ex-New Yorkers & those straight from PR but what's amazing is just how fast the population in Florida has grown since 2000. Over 365,000 is quite an astounding number.

Here's something that I posted in another thread that got no love but I believe we will be hearing more of in the future as our country continues to grow & diversify.

A detailed examination of the future of the USA -- people of Two or More Races (Multi-Racial):

Some background info: There are six major race categories recognized by the US Census & they are (1) White, (2) Black or African American, (3) American Indian and Alaska Native, (4) Asian, (5) Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander and (6) Some Other Race.

Hawaii continues to lead the nation by percentage where 23.6% of all people are of two or more races while California has the largest number by far.

The number of people who chose Two or More Races was 9,009,073 or 2.9% of the total population -- an increase of 2,182,845 or roughly 32%.

Here's some data from the US Census & State Rankings including Puerto Rico & DC:

Kinda interesting, I am assuming since there hasn't been any major immigration from Japan in decades that the lost is mostly the result of inter-racial/ethnic marriages of Japanese-Americans. I wonder if any other ethnic group is similarly decreasing (maybe Native Americans?)

Salvadoran 1,648,968 <:: 655,165 ( 993,803 )
Would have never guessed the Salvadoran population grew that rapidly as well, surpassing Chinese in growth over the last decade.

Spaniard 635,253 <:: 100,135 ( 535,118 )
Where are these half-million Spaniard immigrants? Or is it mostly Latin American immigrants of Spanish descent claiming this?

Would have never guessed the Salvadoran population grew that rapidly as well, surpassing Chinese in growth over the last decade.

Where are these half-million Spaniard immigrants? Or is it mostly Latin American immigrants of Spanish descent claiming this?
Hi, as for the Japanese there are several factors that I believe are going on -- including both which you have already mentioned. I also believe a couple of other factors are the elderly population (which makes up a large share) are dying off & the younger generation are not producing many offspring. As for the Native American population it is continuing to grow. There are also many Native Americans from Latin America that are moving to the U.S. so we should get a better a idea of just how much because the US Census has included Mexican American Indian, Central & South American Indian categories for the 2010 Census.

As for the Spaniard/Spanish category -- I believe that there are a bunch of things going on there like (1) many Latin Americans claiming Spanish instead of going by their nationality, (2) Filipinos & others from former Spanish colonies claiming part-Spanish descent (which is not unusual & remember Hispanic or Latino can be of any race including multi-racial), (3) an increase in those claiming Spanish American (people with long histories in New Mexico & other parts of the Southwest)...Well, those are factors that come to mind that make the most sense to me because there is no large scale migration from Spain to the US going on.

^They are not leaving it's more than likely the older generation dying off, the younger generation mixing with other races/ethnicities (which at one time was a rarity as with Koreans) while those that are Japanese alone are not having as many offspring. Also, there are not as many migrating to the US as in the past. Keep in mind the Japanese have been in the US for many generations.

From 2001-2010 only 76,050 Japanese became legal permanent residents in the US that's very little in comparison to those migrating here from China, Korea, Vietnam, Philippines, etc. and No where near what it was during the massive migration which took place from 1900-1919 where over 216,000 migrated to the US which i'd imagine doesn't include those that were recruited to Hawaii as labor because it wasn't a state yet (but don't quote me on that).

I'm always surprised by how much the Cubans outpunch their weight in politics. I guess that's what congregating in a swing state gets for you.

Census Shows A Growing Latino Population

Listen: http://news.opb.org/article/census-s...no-population/

Quote:
The U.S. Census is offering a more detailed picture of how Latino populations across Oregon -- and the United States - have grown over the past ten years.

April Baer joins me now. Hi April.

April Baer: Hi Beth.

Beth Hyams: Hasn't the Census been rolling out these numbers for a while?

April Baer: That's true. You may remember some reports that came out last winter, noting that Oregon's Latino population grew quite a bit between 2000 and 2010. as of 2010 it stands at about twelve percent. There's a lot of variation from county to county.

What's new are the breakdowns of where Hispanic respondents come from, and in some cases, where they settled.

Here's a fun fact: if you want to talk about demographic growth, the fastest growing Hispanic population group was Spaniards. True, they number only 680 thousand people nationwide, and almost seven thousand in Oregon, but they did turn up with higher percentages of population growth over the ten year period.

Now, if you're talking about raw numbers, the numbers become more familiar. The census tallied that, asking how people described their or their family's country of origin. Here's the Census Bureau's Sharon Ines.

Sharon Ines: "In 40 states of the US, we found that Mexicans were the largest origin group. Now we found that most of these states were in he South and in the West."

She means. states like Oregon.

Beth Hyams: What areas of Oregon saw the greatest increases in Latino population?

April Baer: First off, Oregon's Latino population has grown due to both net migration and natural increase. People moved in, and people who live here had kids. We can say that births within the state represented a large slice of growth, but immigration into Oregon was the biggest factor.

I can't wait for the more detailed results but it's going to be rolled out over a 3 month period for all 50 states which is so damn long!
