Micron to idle and layoff 2,850 - Will not affect Lehi Plant

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,700265346,00.html

Friday, October 10, 2008 Micron Technology Inc., the largest U.S. producer of memory chips, will cut about 2,850 jobs over the next two years and reduce production, in an industry glut.

The cuts represent about 15 percent of its global work force of 19,000. Micron will stop producing memory for digital cameras and mobile phones at its Boise headquarters, according to a statement Thursday.

...The Boise closure won't have an impact on the joint venture with Intel, Chief Operating Officer Mark Durcan said. Micron and Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., operate plants in Lehi, Utah, and Manassas, Va., that produce the chips...

Git 'er done!

What are we waiting for? Let's get The Point done! I got a fairly strong back, albeit old, and a fairly sharp shovel with a fiber-glass handle. I can move a few yards of dirt. Not much good with my hands, so I can't do any of the work that requires real skill. Also got a few bucks ($20 or $30) I can throw into the kitty. I figure if there are about a million other folks with my enthusiasm for the project, we'd have about 1% of the financing in place. The place will be an icon...absolutely nothing else like it in the world! I think the horizontal piece at the top of the tower has to be some kind of ultra-sophisticated wind turbine, taking advantage of power Mother Nature always throws at the location, besides mirroring the balanced rocks of Southern Utah. Sheer genius!

Come on, Brandt. Set up a development fund where a few dreamers like myself can send a few bucks and make believe we are part of the most significant project ever to be built in the State.

so, i drove past the new development in orem-- the proposed 8 story buildings, but are now 5 story buildings.

um....ok, maybe it's just me, but the pictures of the development don't look like they'll fit in that little neighborhood. looks out of place for me.

i think tall buildings should be around other taller buildings....nothing of height is over there, and the area isn't really a "fit" for buildings of that size...IMO

the look of the buildings looks REALLY block-like. not much architecture to it...and the land, sure it's a big enough foot print for it, but does it FIT in the area? my suggestion is no....so, now i'm glad they are only going to be 5 stories and not the 8.

honestly, i think orem is a strange place sometimes. it's just so...hap-hazardly developed. just sprawl. drives me crazy.

I've gotta agree with that. As I posted on the Provo thread, I was down in that area for the first time in a long time this weekend, and I was impressed with how nice Provo is, and how much potential it has. And then I drove up the hill to Orem and I was appalled. The area around the University mall made me ill.
I'm not trying to bash the area just for the sake of bashing. I'm sure Orem has many redeeming qualities (I do actually like the UVU area), but I think that Orem is the prime example of poorly planned and managed growth. That city has grown so much over the last two decades, it's a shame it wasn't handled wisely. I hope other cities that are experiencing rapid growth learn fro Orem's mistakes.

In general I agree with you Scott. At this time, I wouldn't want to live in Orem, unless I knew that imminent change was just around the corner.

However, to be fair Orem is very clean, has spectacular vista's of the Wasatch, very low crime, and now many beautiful homes. Their grid would allow for some excellent future density, if they will but inherit a few citizens with a more progressive planning approach.

I'm not against people who prefer a home and a yard, and I hope America will continue to afford that opportunity to the average citizen. What I don't like is when suburbia is the only choice. Let's hope that cities like Orem will have the sense and ability to evolve into a much better mix of choices. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens to Orem as Front Runner arrives and it's build-out capacity comes to a head.

"Meanwhile, some of Midtown's investors are duking it out with project contractors in a lawsuit over who should get paid first for work done on the project. Big-D Construction and several other contractors and subcontractors say they are owed about $20 million, while Midtown investors BankFirst filed a $62 million lien, and First United Funding filed liens totalling more than $16 million, against the property."

What a mess.

Other Midtown Villages

I wonder how many other Midtown Villages we are going to see before the mess in the housing markets turns around? I am sorry for the people who bought the four sold condos and Orem City.

Once the lending market gets straightened out I imagine somebody is going to pick up a pretty good deal with that Midtown Project.

Is the proposed Utah Lake bridge dead?

http://www.heraldextra.com/content/view/284974/17/

Rep. Ken Sumsion : "in the next 30 years we are going to be building Salt Lake City in Cedar Valley, that is the population projection Sumsion said. "Eagle Mountain has the potential to be the largest city in the state of Utah."

Uhgg, that area needs an urban growth boundary and fast! People should live inside the town in which they work! Building a bridge across Utah lake would mean people are working in Provo and living in Eagle Mountain. This is unacceptable!!! Also, Where are we going to get the water?, not water used for drinking and bathing, but the water that people will use to water their unsustainable grass lawns. People and developers here act as though we live in England, and it's wasting our precious water resource.

UTPlanner, I've never thought of your posts as rants... more like objective, common sense.

Long-anticipated Orem corridor now open

http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705256968,00.html

Stuart Johnson, Deseret News

The corridor is now a seven-lane roadway from 400 West to 1000 East and consists of three lanes in each direction with a median lane. Right turn lanes were added and an effort to focus left turns was fostered in order to increase safety...

... Lieutenant Gov. Gary Herbert, State Senate President John Valentine and Orem Mayor Jerry Washburn, all of which reside in Orem, expressed their initial worries about such a large road coming through their own city. But after years of not supporting such a grand scale parkway, they eventually understood the importance of it.
"If we hadn't done this, the impact locally would have been unacceptable," Washburn said. "I think that is one of the reasons why Senator Valentine, I and others realized that we must increase capacity here or our other roads in our neighborhoods would be clogged and congested to an unacceptable level."

The project cost just under $63 million to complete. Along with the widening of the road which required several residences and businesses to be purchased, street lighting was improved and landscaped pedestrian-friendly walking areas were also incorporated.

Herbert said that because of the support and vision of Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., transportation has and will continue to improve over the coming years.

"We understand and believe that transportation is something that needs to have a high priority," he said. "It has not always been a high priority in our state, but right now we have over 200 projects going on across the state thanks to the good work of UDOT, the funding by our state legislature and the leadership of a good governor who understands that it is not just a quality of life issue, but an issue of economic survival."

hhhmmm....i don't live in this area, and never really use this road much..but seems to me, that the widening of the road didn't do much.

don't mean to be pessimistic, but....think about it...they only widened it along a small stretch. then, it goes to 2 lanes again. but, the way they widened the road, a whole city block in some parts are used for grass, rocks, and landscaping.

in other words: they took out houses and planted trees and grass. nice look, but was it REALLY necessary? that road was busy, but two lanes seemed to be fine. it wasn't THAT busy. univ pkwy is A LOT busier than 800 north in orem.

i'd like to see the traffic studies on it. i don't know...seems like a waste of money to me. i think they should have done it ALL THE WAY to the canyon! instead, it tapers down to the canyon and no one knows the wiser. the trees in the middle of the road are nice, but i don't see the NEED for it. it was a busy road, but did it warrant 63 million dollars to plant trees and grass?

yes, 63 MILLION DOLLARS!!

i don't know...i'd rather see the money spent on more important projects at the time: like widening university parkway from provo to orem state street! talk about a BOTTLENECK!! going from provo to orem up univ. pkwy and down again is a JOKE!! ....now there's a start!
