disappointing? absolutely - this is the first time the jets have defeated the oilers in a playoff series since they won the wha’s final avco cup.

and there’s probably no-one more disappointed than the oilers from the players through management to ownership and fans.

obviously the team needs improvement including how it’s built and how it’s managed on and off the ice. and possibly a bit more puck luck from the hockey gods when it counts - who would have thought any team would get to three consecutive overtimes and lose all three? mike smith on his knees with his head on the ice at the end said it all.

despite that, and despite playing with no fans, this has been the most enjoyable oilers season for a very long time. they didn’t win every game but with very few exceptions they tried to and with very few exceptions we felt they had a good chance to.

as bitter sweet as the season ending is at the moment, they were good value and hopefully the lessons learned - and some cap space - will turn into a good investment and a good return next season.

No puck luck whatsoever, Tippett’s line up stubbornness (Bear shouldn’t have played last night) and lack of depth (Ryan McLeod had 2-3 games of NHL experience before the playoffs) all contributed to the loss. The Oilers should have won at least two of the games, and probably three.

Next season will another further removed from the stink of Chiarelli, Klefbom will be back hopefully, Bouchard will cement his spot on the roster….

But I expect Nuge and Barrie to be gone. I’m mixed on the loss of RNH but he is not worth 6M over 5 or 6 years and he’s supposedly inexplicably demanding more.

And then there’s the goaltending question…

RNH will return

McLeod, with the exception of two giveaways last night, played harder than half of the team, experience or not.

I'm sure his agent is pressuring him to think he's worth more. What's the commission on agent these days?

Speaks to the lack of team depth. McLeod’s effort was fine, as was the rest of the team’s.

Nuge regressed this year quite a bit IMO, and aside from his beautiful goal last night he was quite non-existent the entire series.

I would like to see him back but at $4M to $5M at most. He did not do himself a favor this year with being a UFA now.

Exactly. Ineffective all year, and not required to do the heavy lifting like he had to do when he was 1C early in his career and was essentially thrown to the wolves.

Agree, the hockey gods were not on our side. But that's playoff hockey, expect the unexpected.

I have seen too many poor passes from Bear this season. I've given more then enough chances.

Goaltending, hats off to Smith. He played well. But I do think we need a solid starting goalie as Koski is not it imo.

rnh has accepted every role given to him since the day he got here. and since the day he got here the team has changed those roles and how they expect them to be fulfilled ad infinitum.

rnh has played for 7 different head coaches in 11 years (12 if you include his time in oklahoma) and 5 different general managers.

any regression this year is probably due more to how the team has been coached as the current coach and general manager juggled and assessed their assets to see what they really had going forward. within that, rnh probably got shuffled around from position to position and linemates to linemates more than most because of his ability to do that without complaining.

i hope to see him back and in a role that gives him more certainty than he's had to work with for a long time.

I 100% agree. Despite the disappointment, I enjoyed watching this team whenever I could.

My two cents.
1. Not one penalty was called on McDavid in four games. How is this possible?
2. At least there won’t be any idiot hockey fans ripping limbs off trees in Ice District.

I’ll have fingers crossed Monday for the Habs to beat the Leafs. They just irritate me and I’d love to see them beaten. For the lovely fans of Toronto that make fun of our Oilers I hope you are ready for this. You deserve to lose. lol

We can say things like “ how much longer are Mariner and Mathews going to stick around?” “How many more years are they going to waste their top talent?”

Insane
---

Since the EOCF launched online 50/50 in August, the support from Albertans has been amazing! Some of the highlights include:

$86 Million in total gross sales
$56 Million in gross sales from the 2021 regular season and playoffs
$30 Million in gross sales from NHL hub city bubble games
$43 Million to jackpot winners
$935,000 average jackpot for 2021

Haha haha Leafs. They were dissing us for getting beat in round one. So long T.O. Habs vs Jets should be a good series. Hoping for Winnipeg, western Canada you know but ok if habs win too.
