Bets on how many publications will call this our "new tallest tower?"

Very true. It is not necessarily a sign of immanent construction. It's a positive step, however.

One example (of a myriad) was for a tower in Dallas a few years back. It was being developed by a Turkish developer. They filed FAA paperwork for a 1080' tower. However, to my knowledge, not site plan was approved for the project. The Republic has an approved site plan.

If this is true, should the height of this tower change to 710'?

The released elevations have it at 708'. So the difference in the height must be based on updated elevations that have not yet been released. The Plan Review hasn't been approved and no info has been added to it yet. Hopefully updated elevations will get released. If we don't get any new elevations, I would go with 710'. It could even be slightly taller since the FAA doesn't necessarily calculate the height like we do.

The construction dates on an FAA filing are far from a sure thing. City permit info is much better.

It was/is. Then they submitted that Plan Review for some apparent tweaks including the mysterious "museum".

Our tallest buildings for years have been skinny residential point towers. One of the reasons Indeed tower has made such an impact is that it's wide as well as tall. This thing is even wider. Along w/ 8x it's going to make the Austonian and Indy look like skinny sticks. This is big city bulk

I like both - bulk and skinny. I also like the angles on this one, which makes it unique among all the boxes we currently have - and I'll count Independent in that description despite the fact that it's more interesting at least from the north/south views. Obviously the Sail is different, and I love it. In any case, variety is a good thing in skylines.

Republic is classy and sleek, despite its bulk. I'm a fan.

For a city our size, the variation in design we're getting is really kind of amazing. Even after the demise of 5C's original design (RIP), we've got the Independent, the Sail, the Republic, the Molar, and Indeed. It's a pretty wide variety.

Would this make the case for Austin's defining tower?
