I had no idea the screens could link up and form bigger screens like that. Pretty darned cool. I hope advertisers will want to put up some unique signage there.

Mandarin Oriental Announces New Luxury Hotel And Residences In Dallas, USA
http://www.mandarinoriental.com/hotel/520001161.asp

Hong Kong, 10 May 2006 - Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has today announced that it will manage a new 120-room luxury hotel and 90 branded residences which are planned to open in Dallas, Texas in 2009. The project provides Mandarin Oriental with a further opportunity to extend its prestigious brand into another key US destination.

Mandarin Oriental, Dallas will open in the city’s dynamic new Victory Park development, a USD 3 billion, 75-acre, mixed-use project located in the heart of Dallas. The hotel will occupy the first eleven floors of the new 43-storey, 650-foot Victory Tower, the architectural centerpiece of Victory Park and one of the tallest residential structures in the state of Texas. In addition to the hotel and luxury residences, Victory Tower will also house 75,000 square feet of internationally-recognised luxury retail shopping and 275,000 square feet of premier commercial office space.

Mandarin Oriental, Dallas will be a showcase of elegant, contemporary design with a strong sense of place, while taking inspiration from the Group’s oriental heritage. With average room sizes of over 750 square feet, the 120 guestrooms will be amongst the largest in the city. All guestrooms will offer state-of-the-art entertainment and customer-centric technology systems, a hallmark of Mandarin Oriental hotels worldwide.

Six dining and cocktail venues, including a signature restaurant and an all-day dining facility, will feature the exciting culinary creations for which Mandarin Oriental is renowned. An elegant Lobby Lounge will offer light refreshments, while a stylish and chic Bar will provide the perfect venue for evening cocktails. A dedicated Spa café will feature healthy, alternative fare, and an outdoor pool bar will be a popular choice for relaxation.

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Dallas will offer holistic rejuvenation and relaxation in a tranquil, meditative setting. Incorporating the most comprehensive range of wellness, beauty and massage treatments in the region, the spa will feature life-enhancing signature programmes created exclusively by Mandarin Oriental. As with all Mandarin Oriental spas, the 30,000 square foot space will include private treatment rooms as well as significant water and heat therapies. The spacious Spa area will include a lap pool, private Spa cabanas and a Spa café. European-inspired beauty salons for men and women will also be featured. The fully-equipped fitness facilities will be complemented by dedicated Pilates and yoga studios, as well as a large outdoor swimming pool.

Business travellers will find the latest technology in all guestrooms as well as a full-service business centre. With over 9,000 square feet of meeting space, including a ballroom, four private meeting rooms and two boardrooms, Mandarin Oriental, Dallas will be ideally suited for upscale meetings and functions.

The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Dallas will be located above the hotel, on floors 22-43, offering spectacular views of the city. As with all Residences at Mandarin Oriental, owners will be treated as permanent guests of the hotel and will enjoy privileged access to the services and amenities provided on property.

The project is being developed by Hillwood, a Ross Perot, Jr. company, which is the developer of Victory Park. The world-renowned architectural firm Kohn Pederson Fox has been commissioned for the design of Victory Tower.

“We look forward to bringing Mandarin Oriental’s renowned levels of hospitality to the city of Dallas and specifically to the vibrant new Victory Park development,” said Edouard Ettedgui, Group Chief Executive of Mandarin Oriental. “This project presents an ideal opportunity for Mandarin Oriental to extend our luxury brand in another important business and leisure destination in the United States."

“This announcement marks a major milestone for Victory Park in our endeavour to create Dallas’ premier neighbourhood,” said Ross Perot, Jr., chairman and the founder of Hillwood. “The entry of Mandarin Oriental, best known for its unsurpassed properties in cities like Hong Kong, London and New York City, will raise the bar for hospitality and luxury living in this region.”

As part of Victory Park, Mandarin Oriental, Dallas will be ideally located in one of the country's most innovative master-planned urban districts, with myriad attractions, including shopping, sports, fine dining and entertainment for both leisure and business travellers. The property is a short walk from the USD 420 million American Airlines Center, a prominent component of Victory Park and the region’s premier sports and entertainment complex. After completion, Victory Park will feature over 4,000 high-end residences, four million square feet of office and retail space and recreational facilities.

Dallas is the number one visitor destination in Texas and one of the US Southwest's most metropolitan and cosmopolitan cities. It is the region’s leading business and financial centre, boasting the largest wholesale market in the world and is a top US convention destination. Mandarin Oriental, Dallas will be connected to downtown Dallas by the Area Rapid Transit (DART) light railway. The property is within 15 minutes from the Dallas Love Field Airport and is approximately 30 minutes from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, one of the most accessible airports in the world.

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group is the award-winning owner and operator of some of the world’s most prestigious hotels and resorts, currently operating 21 luxury hotels with a further 10 under development in Prague, Hainan Island, China and Riviera Maya, Mexico (2006), Barcelona and Boston (2007), Grand Cayman (2008), Dallas, Chicago, Las Vegas and Macau (2009). Abandoned building near City Hall slated for condominiums, retail
Board approves $15 million in public subsidies

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...1.22bd7346.html

By DAVE LEVINTHAL / The Dallas Morning News

One of downtown Dallas' oldest buildings is primed for renovation from abandoned hulk into condominiums and retail space, now that a City Hall board has approved $15 million in public subsidies for it.

Built in 1910, the structure at 500 S. Ervay St. will be converted to 321 residential units and 45,000 square feet of retail, according to Bisno Development Co., which owns the property.

The building, vacant for most of the decade, sits across Ervay from City Hall.

The Downtown Connection Tax Increment Financing District board approved the $15 million in subsidies, subject to several caveats.

One is a report from the developer about how it will fulfill affordable housing requirements.

The Dallas City Council must approve the deal, which probably will come before it next month, city officials said.

"I don't believe the project can go forward without the subsidy," said Robert Bisno, chairman and chief executive of Bisno.

"But it's a great project."

I saw that over at DallasMetropolis. That is one VERY impressive tower! With it being so much taller than the W, it almost seems like the two buildings should switch spots so they would step up in height from the freeway.

Oh well...beggers can't be choosers.

Farmers Market projects crop up
New housing stirs interest in area long dormant

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont....2203c43d.html

08:00 AM CDT on Friday, May 19, 2006
By STEVE BROWN / The Dallas Morning News

"On the northwest corner of downtown, construction cranes jostle for room at the booming Victory complex and along Woodall Rodgers Freeway.

But on the opposite side of the central business district, the excitement is about this spring's tomato crop and weekend shopping at the flower sellers'.

Dallas' Farmers Market district is a sleepy pocket of downtown that seems remote from the nearby skyscrapers and condo projects. Produce sheds, industrial buildings and vacant lots have dominated this part of Dallas for decades. "

REX C. CURRY / Special Contributor
"A high-rise condo building will sprout soon at Central Expressway and Canton, near the Farmers Market. Now developers are hoping that the addition of hundreds of residential units will turn the Farmers Market into central Dallas' next hot neighborhood."

".....Along with the recent completion of 284 apartments, two developers are preparing to start work on about 200 townhouses just north of the Farmers Market....At the same time, the city of Dallas is studying plans for a $5 million upgrade of the produce market and other improvements in the district...."

"..."Any residential development will support the Farmers Market."..."

"Builders' plans in the 1980s were bold – proposing everything from a $100 million festival shopping complex to sports facilities and even an office park.....But it wasn't until 1998 that a Houston developer – Camden Property Trust – took the plunge, announcing a $125 million apartment complex adjacent to the Farmers Market. Camden started with 620 apartments and a row of townhomes on Canton Street.....Camden just completed a second, 284-unit phase in its development along Central Expressway. The developer is also selling vacant land it owns to townhouse builders...."

"..."We are probably 90 percent leased on the new phase," said Bill Sengelmann, vice president of Camden. "We're happy with the project, but we can't build everything down here...."

"Camden has sold about four blocks to builders Jim Moore's Urban Innovations and Perry Homes, which have started work on two townhouse projects. "

"..."Our selling point isn't just the Farmers Market, but that you can live downtown," Mr. Moore said. "Normally, you can't buy homes like this in downtown Dallas."..."
