Just a minor update here: I have heard that the family is waiting for the CCH to be completed and see how well it is received before they finalize their plans for their project.

I would suspect that we won't hear anything about the project until mid to late 2023.

Outside of this, I think that there is a somewhat decent chance that we could hear about the apartment tower on the lot east of Harmons (1st South 2nd East) later this year.

Glad to hear things are still in consideration with the APS lot. Last time we were talking about that spot there were some coveted existing buildings that might have been threatened by a building going there. Is that the case still from your info?

Isn't the APS lot still completely empty? Or was there some chance that the buildings on 100S are in danger too? That would be no bueno.

Also, each new tower actually creates incredible mountain views for those inhabiting the buildings. How many cities can boast amazing city AND mountain views?

The last plan that was public, prior to the CCH, was that all buildings on 1st South west of, but not including, the Dinwoody building would be removed. This was the primary reason that Caffe Molise moved to their new location at the SW Corner of West Temple and 4th South.

I don't expect that this would change in their plans.

Check out this hockey arena complex in Tampere, Finland. Would love to see something like this in SLC if we get an NHL team! Not sure if Utah has the ambition for such wild architecture though.

I would hope they find a way to incorporate/adapt those old buildings into their plans instead. The Bennett Glass & Paint Company building in particular is a gem. The APS site is big enough for a large tower by itself.

Also, are there any diagram artists that read these comments? SLC needs drawings for a bunch of projects that have database entries including Liberty Sky, South West Temple, 150 S Main (Utah Theatre Tower), Sundial Tower, and Convexity (Worthington) Tower. I think I speak for all of us when I say that your efforts will be greatly appreciated!

Anything can block your view of the mountains if you’re close enough to it. My neighbor recently parked his RC in the street and now I can only see half of mount Olympus from my bathroom window while I take a morning poo. Really upset about that.

It's also interesting that even with all the developments the downtown area only grew by 6,400 residents in 10 years.

I don't really see the resemblance. The materials are similar (glass, white panels) but the designs are very different.

Eh, not really. Remember, the start of the 2010s was declining in reaction to the financial crisis, which hit downtown and Salt Lake City harder then the suburban areas. Utah stabilized faster than most states, but we have really only seen actual development growth since 2017 or so, City Creek not withstanding.

So we really only saw about 2-3 years of growth before the pandemic hit. The pandemic’s impact on Salt Lake’s 2020 census should not be underestimated. While many had already sent in their census responses, others had not. With the closure of the UofU and other colleges and universities, thousands of students packed up and left the city to go back home. Many not being counted in Salt Lake as they otherwise would have. Instead they were counted in the state’s suburbs or the states they came from as they hunkered down away from the density of the city.

I'll be interested in comparing them in real life when they're done. Looking at the renderings side by side, the portion of Astra Salt Lake with glass to glass windows is more distinct but if I look at the right side of the building I think they look very similar. They do have similar colors, heights, materials, corners, flat roofline... the vertical edges on both sides of the buildings have a slightly different design.

I think Astra SLC looks more like Central Station, even though the other two have the same name. Astra in Phoenix doesn't look like it will have the same rectangular design around that breaks up the glass like the other two. The glass also looks like it will be more of a blue tint than Astra SLC.
