228 king is the old shanghai site.
125 garry is the western canada lotteries building beside the keg.
440 edmonton is one of tyh4e central park buildings.

i'm surprised at all the small projects....there were many big ones applying....i wonder what will happen with them.

kind of sucks that two of them are retrofits of office buildings and not new projects.

440 Edmonton is the former Parkview Place long-term care facility. I was wondering if that building, vacant for a couple of years now, was going to be repurposed.

Those are actually my favorite. They rid the system of underused, out of date office space that isn't getting used. Also repurpose existing structures that IMO is more efficient and obviously more "green" than knocking it over and starting from scratch.

there's a lot of not for profits that didn't receive funding....with big projects...i wonder if there is a strategy for next time....they need to pray there isn't an election before the next round.

where is the bay and true north?

green shmeen...i want new things!

don't knock them over, but there are a lot of new parking lot fillers that were overlooked....the existing buildings will eventually find a use.

As far as I can tell the 261 Princess st. part of 228 King St. & 261 Princess St. already exists. Anyone know why it's listed like that? It looks shady.

^ one of the developers we work with knew that the accelerator fund money was a bit of a long shot, but is waiting for a few more programs that kick in next year.

The way I look at it is, as long as there are a bunch of empty or underused buildings around, there probably isn't a great chance that the empty lots are going to get filled. The more buildings are occupied and used, the more pressure there is to fill in the empty spaces that remain. Our downtown is still too "big" - especially office spaces around Broadway. That entire area should be slowly converted back to mostly residential.

yeah, i get it....i just see this as a once in a lifetime opportunity....this funding is going to go away and never come back...it would be great to get some transformational projects, not just dusty old buildings with a new use.....I'd like to change the image of downtown and central city....building re-use is more likely than parking lot fillers in the open market....it doesn't really need as much help to be feasible.

Lots of great projects, especially in the west Exchange/China Town. That area needs lots of investment. I am a little disappointed not to see a new skyscraper (similar to a 300 Main) and nothing on one of the Graham Ave surface parking lots. But maybe those were unrealistic expectations for this type of grant.

I'm not sure the best use of this money was the plethora of indigenous organizations that got it - they already receive federal funding on all projects so it's kinda like double dipping. I'm sure they'll provide good services but I would have liked to see more money directed to a large project or two.

TrueViking - will the lack of funding put a nail in the coffin on your designs you've been referencing?

That is a great list, more than I thought. I was hoping for more projects that I didn't already know about (I knew of 8 out of 11) but I am happy none the less.

I too, being a skyscraper/development nerd was secretly hoping for some bigger projects as well...even though I have previously said I like the smaller grain projects. Hopefully they will announce another intake soon.

Clearly this is a concerted effort to address the homeless problem facing the city.

I do respect that. Don't get me wrong these projects will address huge needs but I think I was hoping for another 20+ story haha.

Yes. The sexier projects will have to wait. We want our parks and riverbanks back.

one of my projects is market lands, so it will go....i'm working on renderings for the media right now.
another is the first major building at kapyong, and it didn't apply, so its fine.
another is the forks led building at Railside...affordable housing...net zero....we will see if it is part of the next round.

The list of projects is pretty good. 11 projects in total and all are affordable housing or have an affordable housing component. A nice variety of locations too.

I think we need to keep in mind that all these projects come from only a $25 million incentive. That's a drop in the bucket for the federal government. $25 million is the cost to build a 4-5 story apartment building nowadays. So for the price of one apartment building, the federal government managed to get 11 projects the green light.

Also, I agree with Drew that although conversions of old buildings into a new use isn't flashy, it's an efficient use of money and materials.

Was Revera ever held responsible for the shit show that went in their facilities during COVID?

but is retrofitting the best use of this specific money....a once in a lifetime grant.

hopefully the province steps up and joins in....this is their portfolio after all.

also hopefully we can keep an election from happening until all four rounds are done.

^ it's not that much money.

Given the numbers involved, this level of grant is almost within the reach of the Winnipeg Foundation. Maybe they can be convinced to get involved in offering a small number grants at a similar level and similar purpose to this on an annual basis.
