Happy new year! Here's to at least 3 new 20+ story buildings breaking ground this year and at least 2 new 20+ story proposals this year

Agreed, however, the more qualified, dare I say, "intelligent people" like a F500 CEO have followed the money into the private sector, whereas gov't positions will get the leftovers, if even that...

There's no denying that gov't is much less effective and wasteful at literally everything they try and put their fingers in... The accountability levers just don't exist and are rarely based on merit.

I am really fascinated by this silos on 5th project. This built out would be huge for the post district and a granary trax line. I hope they do go with modular construction and actually build it in 12 months like the article suggests they might.

I think I prefer this slightly different rendering with a new street behind the super long and skinny apt buildings behind this project. Does anyone know more about this?

Fully finished this would be a huge change for that part of the city. With the Post District across the street to the east, EVO Campus, Pacific Yard, and INDUSTRY Phase II to the south, and the RDA/UofU Innovation District planned for Station Center to the North, this area is gonna be amazing!

It’s also gonna be really important cause the 500 to 600 South blocks act as the entry and exit for many people into and out of the city because of the freeway, so it sets our first and last impressions. Which is why it would be sooooo nice to get rid of all those hideous billboards along there.

West Quarter Phase II - Block C

And so it begins!!!!!!
Footing and foundation commercial building permit filed for Block C (aka Residential 100 (the building along 200 South directly east to the existing ‘Jackson Apartments’)).

The description says it’s for a 16 floor tower, which looks to be taller then the more recent renderings show (about 13-14 floors), so the overall design may still be in flux. Unless, of course, they are counting floors underground (which may be possible). Hopefully that will be revealed soon.

Hopefully this means we are going to start to see more filings for this project as well as the finalized details for it (including construction start and finish timelines).

Speaking of new starts, does anyone know when groundbreaking is scheduled for the tower on the northwest corner of 4th South and West Temple/

I drove by there this morning and nothing has happened.

I think that the start of the West Quarter's next phase is pretty exciting. I am surprised that we haven't seen more comments. I hope the large part of this phase will start soon as well. Thanks for the update Blah!

Both block C and D are scheduled for completion in 24, so they better start at the sameish time!

A Few Thoughts about our new projects

I as walking downtown today, and had a few thought about our current projects.

For starters, does anyone know if the tower at 4th South and West Temple has
been delayed? No construction has started.

Liberty Sky:

I was just thinking how much better Liberty Sky would have looked if it was twice as tall as it is. It now looks kinda short and squatty ( and ugly).
Why on earth didnt Cowboy Partners and Boyer go with their original plans for Liberty Sky? It looked much better and sleeker (and taller)

Hyatt Regency Hotel:

I was thinking how the sleek new Hyatt Regency Hotel makes the nearby Mariott Hotel and the horrible Holiday Inn Express look really outdated and old.

Any thoughts anyone?

Thank you Blah for the update!!

This one project will be a incredible addition to downtown!
Excited to see it get started!

Meman; Not sure on the West temple project. You're right, the lot is gathering dust and is unsightly. I also agree that the CCH has had an enormous impact on the corner. I would think its construction would put pressure on the entire intersection to redevelop. (I.E. Demolishing the Holiday Inn, the two ugly red brick fiascos, and the squat, half parking 1/4 office thing to the east.)

Many Marriott hotels around the country have an odd type of construction. Most are not attractive. The SLC hotel is no exception. It looks outdated, is too small, and needs a do-over. I would be embarrassed if I were Marriot management at this point.

P.S. Cowboy partners is a non-starter. They should be banned from doing business in the area.

I would love to see a nice JW Marriott hotel tower in downtown SLC, especially considering J.W. himself was from Utah and attended the University of Utah. Here's Edmonton's JW Marriott, for example. Now that would be a great replacement for the cursed Holiday Inn Express.

Changing the subject, I'm very surprised that we haven't seen any development of the abandoned Dunkin Donuts on 400 S or the Sizzler in Sugar House yet. Eyesores on prime real estate.

This tweet from Ryan Sweeney is interesting. I'd love to see another Major League sport in Utah

Amen to you , Iornweed, I too believe Cowboy Partners should be run out of this state. They have no vision or imagination.

Its kinda funny that all of our new towers (or most of them) are being built by out-of-state developers which I feel is the reason they look so much better than what we have gotten in the past by local developers (with the possible exception of the LDS Church).
Just look at the Astra Tower (Boston Developer) and the Main Street Apartments (Houston Developer).

Speaking of Astra, it appears the excavation is complete (its very shallow for a 40-story building) as no activity was going on there today.

I mostly agree except for the fact that possibly the most ambitious large project in the entire city, WQ Phase II, is the brainchild of local developers: the Ritchie Group and Garn. Also PEG with the 465 Main project and potentially Dakota Pacific with the Regent Street tower. Credit where credit is due.

There's no way that excavation is complete. It hasn't really begun.

They're still doing the shoring work prior to the excavation. They still have to excavate for the mat footing, which hasn't happened yet.
