They counted all of us too. City of Tuscaloosa got really angry when the census estimates weren't accurately counting UA students, about 9,000 to 10,000 students.

But, students living off-campus weren't accurately counted, cause most of them just didn't care to fill out the forms. So that's about 8 to 9,000 that didn't get counted. College towns are difficult.

BUT, I was sure to not be counted on my parents' form

Same thing happened to me. I live in Champaign, IL most of the year (I'm about to graduate in a month) but my mother told me she filled me out for Chicago, so I didn't even bother filling out the census for Champaign.

TBH, I didn't even think about that. I assumed my parents would know I didn't live at home. Then I asked, and they said they already included me.

Legality aside, I think that it's better to be counted twice than not counted at all.

With respect to the Maps of US Population Change, the increase in the west is really bothersome to me, not to say nobody should live there. There's still that north/south line of "settlement" just west of Wichita, but the major metropolitan agglomerations seem to be really spreading north to south. I guess I fantasize about that 1950s light pollution map showing the large darkened areas east of the Mississippi.

I am still a firm beliver that this 2010 cenus undercounted pretty much every major and mid major metro region in this country. I think that they used the gop math on 2010, otherwise show me why they did not in this 2010 case.

The first numbers to come out of the 2010 census was an estimated undercount of anywhere from 4-12 million people. The inter cities paid the largest losses and the largest metros also had to pay a price that was not needed.

That said due to the general and national undercount, we expected anywhere between 8-12 million more people that were accounted for.

I expect no better for the major MSA's of this Union to do any better in another 9 years. It seems the system is stacked against a real true count.

Here is just one news account, thanks to a fellow fourmer.

With the 2010 Census showing Chicago suffering steep losses in population, some city leaders are moving to seek a recount, a move that could have ramifications for the city and for national politics as well.

The census showed that Chicago lost around 200,000 people in the years between 2000 and 2010, which will mean a significant drop in federal funding for the city.

"It translates into hundreds of millions of dollars over a ten-year period that will affect the city of Chicago," 2nd Ward Alderman Bob Fioretti said, according to WBEZ. "It will impact on everything we do - from roads, new construction. So if we can find the numbers, we ought to have a recount."

Forty-four other alderman signed on to a resolution urging the Census Bureau to re-figure the city's numbers. The city would have to pay for such a count, but even a small increase in population would make up for the cost in grant monies.

And Fioretti and others have reason to believe that the Census figures might be low.

The American Community Survey for 2009, an annual project that tracks population trends in years between the decennial census, pegged the population loss at only around 70,000 since the year 2000, although that is more of an estimate than a hard count.

That said all of the population losses of the city limits of the big ones means true, real dollars, of millions of federal monies that will not be repaid from the blue cities that have over-paid the fed for several decades.

It seems as though these big cities and metros learned little from the 2000 census and just took it over the barrel for not other reason than sloth and [ it is what it is... ]

GD I hate that statement. [ it is what it is... ] Talk about giving up ones own jugular and upper aorta at the same time and
saying oh well, at least I am alive for the moment. Capitulation is what it is.

Cities don't pay the Fed. The Fed is the Federal Reserve, which is a quasi-independent organization overseen by the federal government.

Hey urbanguy, what do you make of this site here.
http://www.s4.brown.edu/us2010/segre...0/Default.aspx

It seems that something is off or I am misreading something. For instance, you have this for Houston CSA.
Houston-Baytown-Huntsville, TX CSA
White alone: 3,652,582
Black or African American alone: 1,045,232
American Indian and Alaska Native alone: 38,796
Asian alone: 390,357
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone: 3,896
Some Other Race alone: 738,746
Two or More Races: 181,754
Hispanic or Latino (of any race): 2,124,875
Total: 6,051,363

But on the link, it looks completely different.
http://www.s4.brown.edu/us2010/segre...?metroid=26420

It has 417,000 Asians for Houston's MSA. Shouldn't the Houston CSA have more than the 390,000 that you listed? Or did that link make to much of an emphasis on Asian Hispanics or whatever. Just wondering. Thanks for your work.

@ unusualfire Hi, it's because Hispanic or Latino is not a Race thus can be of any race which includes those of mixed races/two or more races.

@ TexasBoi, my best guess is that they are combining the numbers for people that are part-Asian (mixed race) & Asian alone.

I guess I should be happy in case I ever get stranded there I can open a phone book and call someone. Speaking of which, I was up in Vermont last fall and found myself running late getting back to New York so I stopped for gas and another Poly happened to drive by-a Samoan who worked at a college. Anyway we got to talking and he invited me to his home for dinner and I had fun visiting with his beautiful family-anyway I wound up spending the night on their couch-complete strangers aside from our common Polynesian hertiage. LOL.

*Note if you include those that are part-Pacific Islander the number as of April 2010 was 1,225,195 (we finally broke the million mark!)

As for the numbers for the micropolitan areas on the other islands of Hawaii those are for the entire counties or islands like Oahu.

Lastly, as for places like Fayetteville, AR, Spokane, WA, Salem, OR, Killeen, TX & some AR-OK border town in Oklahoma it has a lot to do with the Marshallese moving those areas. Many from the first wave to Arkansas started out working for Tyson foods. There are also many in Salem that work at canneries. There has been a huge exodus (relative to their country's population) of Marshallese from the Marshall Islands & Chuukese, Pohnpeians, Kosraeans from Federated States of Micronesia & Palauans from Palau to the US over the past decade probably comparable to Samoans & Chamorros in the past.

Another sneaker is the rapid growing Pacific Islander population in Anchorage which grew by 145% or by 3,625 (2,497 -> 6,122). From my understanding there has been a substantial increase of Samoans moving there.

Really? I guess they've updated factfinder2? Im late. LOL.

Can you give me the link for the updates.

*Note if you include those that are part-Pacific Islander the number as of April 2010 was 1,225,195 (we finally broke the million mark!)
That seems like so much more than I would have ever guessed. Maybe we're finally answering the census correctly.

WOW...That is so interesting. Thanks. I knew you'd have an answer.

Another sneaker is the rapid growing Pacific Islander population in Anchorage which grew by 145% or by 3,625 (2,497 -> 6,122). From my understanding there has been a substantial increase of Samoans moving there.
There are Tongans there too. It is a sneaker though. There is a Tongan Ward(Mormon) there now long time. I know of many who work for on fishing boats.

Those that are at least part-Pacific Islander for select states (2010):

Hawaii: 355,816
California: 233,405 (Dayum, there's a lot of our peeps in Cali)
Washington: 64,689
Utah: 34,819
Texas: 34,506
Florida: 31,138 (Way out in the FL!!!) LOL!
Nevada: 28,415
Oregon: 23,486
New York: 21,768
Arizona: 20,167
Yes, Florida is a surprise. I have relatives in Tampa, Orlando and Miami and they tell me locals think theyre Brazilian or something like that. My relatives were the choreagraphers and managers of the Polynesian show at Disney World patterned after the shows in Hawaii.

About North Carolina, this Tongan family from SF moved back there like 30 years ago-one of their daughters was the one married to that NFL player who died and for a time, there was suspicion that she did it? My sister flew back there to attend the funeral.

Its really intreresting how we dont think about our diaspora until we actually think about it. LOL.

As far as the West Coast, we see each other everywhere. Our relatively small number really doesnt make much of a difference. We find each other.

I went to a Hawaiian-Samoan-Tongan-Thai wedding last weekend in Redding of all places. It was off the hook.

Now if only we Tongans and Samoans can get a hold of some of our kids and smack the sense into them. Too many fall through the cracks. One day we'll get there.

^Do you get mistaken for a lot of different ethnic groups or races? I do all the time. I've had people mistaken me for Native American (even by Native Americans!) in the upper plains, Malaysian in South Korea but most of often Latino (Mexican, Puerto Rican or Dominican) & even Cambodian (by the cashier & a customer) at a Khmer Market I shop at on occasion for hard to find ingredients.

Anchorage does have a fairly long history with Polynesians settling there but i'm just surprised at how fast it has grown over the past decade.

As for the West Coast, I think that the Bay Area's Pacific Islander population grew faster than LAs & if it continues will probably become larger in the near future. Seattle's is also growing very fast with the steady stream of Samoans, Hawaiians, Chamorros, Fijians & various Micronesian groups moving there.

BTW, Here's a link to the updated Census information.

Also, in regards to Tongan & Samoan youth -- why do you think that rivalries between the two continue to exist in some places? I remember there being some tension between the two back in Hawaii growing up (not really sure if it has improved) & have also read of a recent attack on a couple of Tongans in New Zealand by a Samoan gang (because they were Tongan).

People never know what I am. In Brazil, people assume Im Brazilian. Its usually on the West Coast and Hawaii where people have a general idea-that Im Polynesian and something(mixed with Irish-English; hence my olive skin, green eyes and reddish brown hair). Hispanics in California are always speaking to me in Spanish and I usually play along since I speak Spanish(hehe).

I have no clue why this rivalry exists in some places. That was never my experience growing up in the Bay Area.

But Tongan kids are so bad sometimes. Many of my dearest friends from my mission days Brazil have since moved to Utah(where Tongans are known for robbing banks and being the catalyst for gang warfare on the Wasatch front-SMDH), and they are like, 'yikes I didnt know Tongans were like that'. To which I usually reply, 'excuse me Cidade de Deus?' LOL. All in good fun.

Anyway, I am pleased that as the years go by, more and more of our youth are finally taking advantage of the incredible opportunities for education and advancement that exist in the US and Australia and NZ and UK and so on.

I've noticed a relatively large number of Tongans in continental Europe now too. Germany especially. Its very fascinating.
