Ottawa Redblacks fire head coach Paul LaPolice

The Ottawa Redblacks have fired head coach Paul LaPolice, according to a report from Postmedia’s Tim Baines.

“Paul is an excellent man who has put everything he has into this job. But, unfortunately, we haven’t won nearly enough games,” OSEG CEO Mark Goudie said in a statement confirming the news. “We are committed to getting back to what RNation deserves which is exciting and winning football.”

The 52-year-old LaPolice was hired as the team’s head coach in December of 2019, shortly after winning the Grey Cup as the offensive coordinator of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He did not make his debut along Ottawa’s sideline until August 2021 due to the cancellation of the 2020 CFL season amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Redblacks went 3-11 under LaPolice in 2021, finishing fourth in the East Division and eight points out of a playoff spot. General manager Marcel Desjardins was fired with three games remaining in the regular season and replaced on an interim basis by assistant general manager Jeremy Snyder.

Ottawa hired Shawn Burke as the team’s new general manager in December 2021 following a decade-long stint in personnel with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Burke and his new front office staff overhauled the team’s roster with over half of the team’s Week 1 starters in 2022 being in their first year with the Redblacks.

The club started the year with an 0-6 record, which was due in part to a leg injury sustained by quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. The team went 3-2 from late July to early September, defeating the Toronto Argonauts, Edmonton Elks, and Montreal Alouettes. Though not formally eliminated, they have since fallen out of postseason contention, recording their third consecutive loss on Friday against the B.C. Lions.

With 9 days to go before their next game against Montreal, Ottawa finally decided to pull the trigger on a coaching change. Veteran special teams coordinator Bob Dyce will serve as interim head coach.

“I have enjoyed working with Paul and thank him for his contributions to this team over the past two seasons; today isn’t an easy day,” Burke said in a team statement. “In this business, sometimes a change is required to help move a team forward and that’s what we’ve done here. We’re fortunate to have a coach of Bob Dyce’s calibre and experience able to step up and take on this role.”

Now 3-11, the Redblacks have four games remaining: two at home and two on the road. The team is currently 0-7 at home this season.

Edmonton Elks break record for longest home losing streak in pro football history

Call the Guinness Book of World Records, because the Edmonton Elks’ home ineptitude has reached historic levels.

Saturday’s 25-18 defeat at the hands of the Montreal Alouettes marked the team’s 15th consecutive loss at Commonwealth Stadium, setting a new pro football record for the longest home losing streak.

Edmonton looked to be on pace to avoid that inauspicious honour, taking a narrow 18-17 lead into halftime. However, the Elks were shut out after the break and committed two turnovers in the red zone — the first being a 100-yard pick-six by Alouettes’ linebacker Tyrice Beverette which would prove to be the margin of victory.

That broke a four-way tie for the all-time lead in consecutive home losses, passing the 1987-88 Ottawa Rough Riders, 1988-89 Dallas Cowboys, and 2008-10 St. Louis Rams.

Edmonton’s last victory at Commonwealth came on October 12, 2019 — 1,085 days ago –against the B.C. Lions. The intervening years have included an organizational name change, a global pandemic and four separate head coaches — Jason Maas, Scott Milanovich (who never coached a game), Jaime Elizondo, and now Chris Jones. None have been able to deliver a win for the hometown crowd.

The Elks will have two more opportunities to avoid going two full seasons without recording a home victory, with the next coming on Saturday, October 15 against the Toronto Argonauts.

Too bad about Lapo, he's a good guy but this is surely the end of the line as far his head coaching career is concerned. Maybe, like Mike Benevides, he is simply meant to be a coordinator.

As far as Edmonton goes, ouch. They had a couple more decent seasons after winning the Grey Cup in 2015 but then they hit the skids in 2018 and it has gone from bad to worse since then. In my mind, those Ottawa Rough Rider teams of the late 80s and early 90s set the benchmarks for sheer futility so it's hard to believe the storied Elks are now breaking their records. But remember Elks fans, it's always darkest before the dawn...

I think it's a curse, they've never won a home game since they changed their name from Eskimos

Hamilton still has a small glimmer for final playoff spot if they win out and Riders continue to poop the bed. I hope it happens as I really hate the crossover rule as it kills the eastern playoff rivalries.

Yeah wow, I think they must have counted everyone in attendance twice. Kind of surprised that they even bother opening the upper decks at this point.

Sadly, the four of us have passed on our Elks season renewal.

We were finding it harder to go/coordinate, but are just disappointed in the on-field effort and will return once it is warranted.

I hope Tre Ford can get healthy and do well next year as I think he would be an excellent spark to rebuild that fan base.

Watch out for the Alouettes now just 1 game back of the Argos, Stanback coming back and their schedule they get back to back against Ottawa followed up by back to back against the Argos. East Final at Molson stadium would be awesome.

If they could get behind him like the support for Rourke it would be great to see. He has the tools but I sure hope he hasn't lost the opportunity.

It's like they became an expansion team and are going through all the trials and tribulations of one. But hard times are when you need the fans and not have them jumping ship.

Toronto @ Calgary: expect Calgary to come out with a shot still at a home playoff game
4-0 this week. Nice. 43-22. Looking to go 0-4 this week...

4 tough picks though and the CFL site is experiencing some issues. No game results for weeks 7 through 17 right now and the standings only show up to week 6. So I have no idea what I'm doing. Sounds about right.

Saskatchewan @ Hamilton: Hamilton, because Saskatchewan deserves to lose and lose big this year
BC @ Toronto: yikes, BC because they really need this win.
Edmonton @ Winnipeg: Winnipeg even with nothing to play.
Ottawa @ Montreal: Montreal is going to cruise into the playoffs and be the East representative in the Grey Cup. I know I said that about Ottawa, but this time for sure!

Alouettes have activated Stanback off the injury list montreal looking like a very good shot at hosting the east final with their last 4 games against Ottawa and Toronto.

3-1 last week to go 44-21 on the season. I can hear HomeInMyShoes' footsteps...

For this week:

Saskatchewan @ Hamilton - A compelling matchup with Hamilton struggling to stay in the playoff race. This one is a tough call, but I'll take the Ticats at home. Hamilton.

BC @ Toronto - Another tricky one. Both teams are floundering somewhat, but I do think the Lions are the better team. BC.

Edmonton @ Winnipeg - Bit of a mismatch here, Bombers in a walk. Winnipeg.

Ottawa @ Montreal - Ottawa is alread yin next year country and the Alouettes seem to be getting better down the backstretch. Having Stanback back only strengthens the case. Montreal.

Disappointing week of football. No game was really all that exciting unless you were a Bombers fan. I'm glad the Riders lost to the Ti-Cats, missing the post season is the only way the team is going to make the shakeup it desperately needs.

Besides, the Ti-Cats making the playoffs is the first step to them finally beating the Bombers for the Grey Cup in the biggest underdog story in CFL history.

Bombers host west final nov 13th at IG field. I am not sure if you give Collaros the last 2 games off to prevent injury but risk him getting rusty or not. Dru Brown could use the starts to gain valuable experience.
