Yes, let's put all this unproductive city-bashing behind us.

While I think that SJ is an underrated city and definitely has its share of detractors, stooping to the lowest common denominator does nothing to change anyone's mind, and just invites further mud slinging.

I used to have a bit of a defensive reflex when people would put down SJ or express the usual outdated and/or negatively distorted tropes, but lately I've taken to just letting them be - they don't know what they're missing out on.

I'm looking forward to another great year for development in SJ, and a gradual return to normal for local businesses as the pandemic begins to wind down.

speaking of moving on, and talking about development - anyone else notice the advent of million dollar homes? Would you ever think the Vancouver-like practice of tearing down big homes to build even bigger ones would reach our shores? It’s happening in K-Park. This is a sampling - mostly in Millidgeville / NE city

The one in K Park is beautiful. There's also a couple in Lorneville. I think acre architects built something out there that won some sort of award. The one beside it is huge too.

Well, there goes SJ's hope for a Tourism rebound in 2021.

The Cruise ship ban is extended to 2022. So the Maritime cities won't be able to have cruise ship visitors bolster their bottom lines again this year. Another blow for SJ, Sydney and Charlottetown especially.

One small light of hope, is the order could be rescinded early if conditions improve; but even if it is pulled back, I doubt the ships would come back until late summer at the earliest.

They're absolutely not going to pull back any restrictions. I wouldn't be surprised if they extend the ban through 2024 or something. Saint John should treat the industry as dead and pivot accordingly. Keep the lights on at the terminals, that's it.

SJ, Sydney and Charlottetown especially? Not sure I follow.

Halifax had 179 vessels and 324K pax in 2019 and was expecting better for 2020. Instead, the port now estimates the 2020 revenue loss at $165-$170 million. Who knows what 2021 would have been like, absent a pandemic?

Or did you mean that Halifax is better able to withstand the loss of the season than other Maritimes cities?

Pretty much the bolded part. While the other cities do have a varied economy, SJ and Sydney especially (not so sure about Charlottetown) were dumping a LOT of money into being appealing to the Cruise Ship industry to lure more ships to their berths for more tourist dollars. And now that investment has been shot to hell, outright killed for 2 full seasons, and looking at a long recovery period beyond that.

Halifax, while it gets a lot from cruise ships as well, has a lot of other irons in the fire, so losing the tourist/cruise ship dollars isn't quite as damaging to it overall.

Got it - thanks. And container shipping is really buzzing and Halifax has just added another line, so point taken.

But as for the cruise industry, a lot of waterfront businesses are really taking a pounding. I really wonder how many will be left on the other end of this mess.

The port hasn't put all its eggs in one basket with the modernization project. There's already been container growth and new shipping lines that have been announced over the past year.

Wayne Long did an interview recently, (Feb.5th, 2021), talking about the development.

Funding from all 3 levels of government has now been secured for repairing the sea wall and raising the site! Wayne also said the project will also include a makeover of Loyalist Plaza, a new boardwalk, and a completely different look of the face of Market Square. (The Harbour Passage will also be extended). Announcement is coming within the next two weeks and he said work will begin this coming spring.

After all this beginning preparation work has finished, then EMG (the developers of the new proposed mixed-use residential and commercial development for the former Coast Guard site) can begin work. The developer's initial plans (that were mentioned back in 2019), were that it could include residential units, retail and commercial space, a hotel, arts and culture space, public access to the waterfront, and green space. I would assume these ideas are still in the plans, but we will have to wait and see when they officially announce their plans.

Also in the linked interview, Wayne says there are other projects that he hopes to announce within the next 6 months to a year.


Overall, things are finally happening with this development! I'm looking forward to it starting this spring!
