So FIFA sent out an exclusive purchase window email for members and when I went in to try to book Egypt and NZ (my son is a big Mo Salah fan) they only have Cat 1 and Cat 2 tickets and the cheapest is $530 CAD. Cat 3 and Cat 4 (upper level) were unavailable to purchase for this. I cannot see BC Place full when they are charging that much, the prices have to come down, right?

I am also going to this game. I purchased via the Visa lottery. I paid $500 a ticket for Cat 3.

There is almost zero chance this gets cancelled. They can hold the World Cup in warzones and it'll still on even if civil war breaks out.

Brazil was the last real affordable World Cup. Russia and Qatar were good experiments.

FIFA has now designed the whole ticketing process to instill FOMO to reel in casual fans and influencers along with die hard fans. People are paying premium prices due to the artificial scarcity created by FIFA with multiple draws that sell out within minutes. The consumer has no time to think. For all intents and purposes...There were no Cat 4 tickets available in the draws and there were a very limited number of Cat 3.

Globalization and social media have driven demand for live events through the roof. Companies have also perfected their marketing to further demand. Just look at what happened to entertainment and sporting events like the superbowl, UFC and WWE.

People are shelling out crazy money just to be there and show others they are there.

FIFA could have just done a general sale for tickets and I bet Egypt vs New Zealand would still have 15-20k seats remaing.

I really hope we never host a FIFA tournament again. I'm going to openly voice a wish that some sort of a disaster or near-diplomatic catastrophe will take place that will make FIFA never consider Vancouver as a preliminary bid again and we can go back to hosting anything better than this clown parade.

This whole plan is absolutely retarded. What about people with mobility issues or physical disabilities? How are they going to get them to the stadium. That last mile pedestrian zone is going to be brutal for anybody with any sort of mobility or disability. It's going to be people on top of people.

Sidewalks, like roads, can be closed for an event, and often are. FIFA are the latest in a series of major events that limit access to specific parts of the city. The Indy and the Olympics both saw closures of roads and sidewalks, for example. FIFA's security perimiter and 'last mile pedestrian zone' seem extreme, and not being able to use the closest SkyTrain station to get direct access is weird.

There are any number of significant disruptions coming. The Courts are going to be significantly affected. "The Provincial Court of British Columbia has been advised that many peace officers/police officers will be deployed for public safety, traffic control and crowd management during the FIFA World Cup 2026. This will limit the police’s ability to participate in criminal and traffic proceedings. It may also impact the BC Sheriff Service’s ability to support court operations, including transporting accused persons in custody to court. In addition, it is anticipated that travel in some areas of Vancouver will be significantly impacted, in particular travel to the downtown core may be severely restricted, which will affect the ability of Court personnel and participants in Court proceedings to travel to some Court locations."

The East Van skatepark will be closed down, and the International Dragonboat Festival is cancelled (although the organisers managed to put on a couple of smaller competitions).

It will be a longer walk and I am not sure the plan for people with mobility issues, but the last few big events (Grey Cup, VWFC playoff game, Miami CONCACAF game were a zoo getting people into the stadium. There is not enough space for people around the stadium, proper lines couldn't be formed and it was a mess. If you move the gate outwards (red area on the image below) and have a bigger and smoother way to line up and get though the gate with all the FIFA requirements, I think it will be better

I can't speak for either but my personal bar for "lineups from hell" had to be the East Gate at Expo 25. From the exit of the station to the gate was probably 200 meters, but it was all arranged as a massive serpentine on a paved slab.
Almost two hours with no shade (hope you brought sunscreen!), nowhere to sit and no water bottle because you knew that once you reached the gate it would be taken away.

Here's the FIFA road closures link. There's some weasel wording about mostly keeping walking and wheeling access open, but I'm pretty sure the seawall isn't included in that, and will be closed where it's in the FIFA 'only one entrance to the stadium' zone.

In November the only entrance was expected to be on Pacific Boulevard, so the shifting it to the end of False Creek is new.
