This is such a cool development. Gotta love what that Shopify money can build, I hope those guys build more condo projects.

The line of buildings to the west between this development and the Metro will be first up.

I'd love to see the Shell station replaced with something better, too, but i'm likely dreaming for a bit on that one.

Not a strip mall, but those buildings were pretty much expressly built to be temporary.

One vertical band of what I think is the terra cotta cladding has gone up on the east side of the tower. If so, it has a nice warm look to it.

The terra cotta cladding is now going up on the west side of the tower and it is looking quite interesting. Pretty much the colour of flowerpots, in contrast to the vertical band of brown on the east-facing side. I don't think there's anything else like it in town.

Occupancy will begin this spring and continue throughout the summer for the remaining five units. Of these five units, two are 2 story townhouses. Pricing for available units is not to be distributed publicly but starts in the low $900’s. There is only one penthouse unit left - a four-bedroom plus den, three-bath which is described as a 3,923sqft “custom home” complete with 270-degree views and a 426sqft outdoor terrace.

In recent months, the new St. Charles Market (SCM) development has been rapidly taking shape, and 2020 promises to be a breakthrough year for the project. André Cloutier, Director of Business Development for project builder The Lake Partnership Inc. (TLPI), reports that first occupancy of the condo units will start in late April, beginning with the lower floors in the new building. When we spoke in early January, only five condo units and two townhomes on Barrette Street remained for sale, and time was running short for prospective owners to choose finishes.

A centerpiece of SCM’s commercial portion is to be an exciting new restaurant. According to André, TLPI has been immersed in discussions of restaurant design with some of Ottawa’s top firms and expects to have an architect and design team chosen within the next few weeks. Restaurant construction will begin immediately thereafter. André is optimistic that plans are on-track for a restaurant opening in the fourth quarter of this year, but admits that “the big question on everyone’s mind is who will be operating this restaurant?” Alas, that all-important detail is not yet available for publication, but André promises that the NEN will have the scoop “as soon as the time is right.”

Passersby may have noticed that ModBox, the marketing and sales arm of the SCM development company, recently moved into the heritage house at 96 Beechwood Ave., former home to a succession of restaurants, beginning with El Meson and ending with Arturo’s. The venerable building is now a sales centre for ModBox projects, including The Grid Lofts in Hintonburg, Kenwood and Churchill in Westboro, Lambton Avenue in Lindenlea, and of course, SCM on Beechwood. –JH

The renders promised warm glow while the reality is -- flowerpot. Nonetheless, I like this unique cladding. Will be interesting to see how it weathers.
