Pleasantly surprised about how most people adapted to the icy roads on Saturday.
The Henday was relatively sane. Yes there were the few large SUV and Pickup drivers that didn’t seem to know there was no stopping but overall the traffic moved well.
Figured they should have moved that transport truck out of the ditch by now though.

I wonder if its possible for the new Queen Elizabeth pool at the Kinsmen to be converted to a hot tub during the winter?

Anything is 'possible'... but the cost to do it now would be prohibitive likely.

To Bad Rossdale is closed, heat could have been scrubbed off from that.

Banff Hot pools are topped off by boilers in the winter.

The hot springs pools we all know and love - Radium, Miette, Banff, Fairmont, etc - are geothermally heated by mama nature. So dig a hole deep enough and pipe water through there?

Would it be possible for the City to deal with slop downtown a bit better? parking stalls and loading zones were brutal, as was trying to cross the street... Maybe we should all just pedway I guess.

Downtown is far from the only place suffering from this, unfortunately. Hope the snow lets up for a bit so the city can play some proper catchup with plowing, windrow removal, etc.

On another wintery note, the latest Apple Holiday Commercial was filmed in Edmonton & St. Albert! Thought that was kind of cool, and the ad is pretty good as well!

Most windrows were removed downtown last night. They started on 104 street (north of 100) at about 8:30 and began picking up windrows a few hours later....which provide Mr and Mrs Shofear with great intertainment as the windrow was pushed into the northbound lane preventing people parked at the meters from being able to leave.

We watched some guy walk out of Kellys stand around by his car wondering how the hell he was going to leave. He hesitated, got in his car, positioned himself to drive over the windrow, realized it was a bad idea, stand around for a few minutes talking on his phone, then walk away in anger. It might not sound funny, but Mrs Shofear doesn't have the longest attention span and she fwas entertained for a good hour watching it all unfold.

Well understood, but downtown and places such as whyte should be cleared with priority.

I agree, my comment was more for general discussion and hope that the city eventually addresses this everywhere. Absolutely the city core should have priority on this type of thing - especially as we're trying to embrace the Winter City concept.

Areas that get large amounts of walking traffic (around LRT, Whyte, 124, 118, DT) have been cleared well.. and those areas should be done first

But the city has dropped the ball in more than a few locations on commuter roads, where 2 lanes are still more like 1 1/2 lanes

This winter I give the city a B- for snow cleaning so far

Experience a unique, family-friendly, French Canadian tradition at Cabane à Sucre. Taste la tire (maple toffee), catch a ride on a horse-drawn sleigh, strap on some snowshoes and enjoy the vibrant music of Les Bûcherons (The Lumberjacks). Bring your skates and enjoy the outdoor rink.

Cabane à Sucre is a sugar house (also known as a sap house, sugar shack, sugar shanty) where sap collected from sugar maple trees is boiled into maple syrup. During the spring when the maple sap is flowing, families and friends gather in these sugar houses to eat la tire and celebrate.

We're planning our third edition of the famous Parka Patio right now—for late February, with the theme of Ice / Land. This year, we're excited to hold the event at our new location for the first time—where you'll be able to move directly from the heated patio through the galleries, filled with music, installation art, food, dancing, and a silent auction.

Latitude 53's heated patio will be decked out with sparkling ice—and the gallery doors will be open, beckoning visitors into a warm, cosy chalet space, with installation art, live music and DJs, food and drink, and a silent art auction in support of contemporary art in downtown Edmonton.

Entering its twenty-fourth year, the Silver Skate Festival is the longest running winter festival in the City of Edmonton. Still rooted in Dutch traditions, in recent years the festival has become an extravaganza of art, culture, recreation and sports programming in William Hawrelak Park. This is no small feat and would not be possible without the support of our partners and in-kind contributors. Take the time to visit our partners page.

Our 24th annual edition of the festival will be a little different. The pond in Hawrelak Park is closed due to construction in preparation for the ITU international triathlon proudly hosted by the City of Edmonton in the summer of 2014. We are all very excited. The good news is that an 8000 sq. metre temporary ice rink in the southeast corner of the park has been created for public skating.

This year's sporting events will be hosted at Hawrelak Park and at our satellite sight, the Victoria Oval. Marathon skate races and the Kortebaan, a traditional Dutch long blade sprint race will be held at the Victoria Oval on River Valley Road while the Edmonton Winter Triathlon will take place in Hawrelak Park.

Festival Programming will include an expanded program of free events and activities to include even more recreational activities, snow sculpting, , roving performers, horse drawn sleigh rides, our international snow sculpture symposium, Live Performers in the Parks, four evening of the Silver Skate Folk Trail with fire sculpture installations, and our Heritage Village.

Attendance

Over 60,000 people enjoyed the Festival in 2013 and the Silver Skate Festival has become the premier winter festival in the greater Edmonton area. We anticipate even more festival goers in 2014
