Midland, Texas is where George W. Bush ran an oil company into the ground in the 1980s.

It was an impressive feat.

Possibly the most expensive uncompleted building in the U.S., the topped out and cladded Fontainebleau resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. $2 billion was already spent before construction stopped and another $1.5 billion is needed to finish it. Carl Icon bought it out of bankruptcy last year for $156 million and is just sitting on it. He spent a little to preserve it and is waiting out the Great Recession before making any decision on what to do with it.

In October 2010, owner, Carl Icahn auctioned off the furnishings intended for the building. Observers are taking that as a sign he has no plans to complete the resort.
This is a must watch documentary about a man who talks to the people who live in the flood control channels (a lot of whom were victims of the recession) in Las Vegas. He also breaks in and climbs the Fontainebleau Hotel. Really good stuff.

A little TLC and those Houston buildings could be real stunners. Conversion to condos/lofts?

Ah yes, once again, bulldoze another glorious architectural work of art from our historical past, and pave over it with a twisted glass BOX!

Oh how this will SURELY be looked upon as a wonderful leap forward for the city

...

BAH HUMBUG!

David Stott looks pretty good for a (mostly) vacant high rise.

Speaking of other vacant Detroit high rises... Pretty obvious which one is vacant. (The needs no introduction Michigan Central Station).

The Wulitzer Building is currently vacant though a developer has purchased it recently and has plans for residential renovation.

The Broderick Tower (on the left) is not vacant anymore and has gone through residential conversion (which is was undergoing in my previous picture). The David Whitney Tower (on the right) is technically still vacant, but it's going through renovations right now and should be occupied by the later half of this year, similarly to become residential and hotel units.

The tower on the left side corner is vacant and the shorter orange tower behind it has been demolished since this picture was taken.

Only a block away, the United Artist Theatre (the tall brown building) is mostly vacant though occasionally there's been hints at activity on the ground floor of the building. Nothing official.

The Vinton Building is vacant, though it has gone through extensive renovation for residential. However, it went up in the air at whatever point, but now Dan Gilbert owns it so it's likely to see activity soon.

The Farewell Building (the graffiti'd tower in the back) is currently vacant and reuse plans are kind of up in the air as of now.

And finally the dirty jewel of a tower that is the Cadillac Tower. I think it's currently the tallest vacant high rise in Detroit as well as the tallest structure in the world with an exterior fire escape. However, there hasn't even been rumors for reuse in quite a while but man when that day comes.

There's a few other notable vacant towers, but I don't have pictures of them as of right now.

In Atlanta, the Medical Arts Building is the biggest abandoned building I can think of.
12 stories, opened 1927, vacant since 1995.

Now for a little hope......

Locally, this 15 story hotel in DT Moline stood empty for around 12 years. A symbol of the collapse of the farm implement industry that hit us hard. It was rehabed in 1995 to apartments as the local economy slowly revived. That was at a time when many around here scoffed at the notion of bringing living spaces back to downtowns. The developers proved the locals wrong, though, and it proved to be very popular and currently the resurgence of downtown apartments is remarkable, they can hardly keep up with the demand (mostly in Davenport, Rock Island and Moline).

I'd like to give an update. As Shakman said, the one on the right (Texas Tower) is being replaced by this, a 49-story office tower. It's coming down floor by floor, they are moving pretty fast.

Here's a recent pic update, by Nate99 on HAIF. As you can see the top floors are now gone.

http://oi62.tinypic.com/2hnx26q.jpg

The white and black building hiding in the back is 806 Main, it's being wrapped in a facade that more resembles the original look of the building. When completed, it will be a JW Marriott hotel.

Construction pic by me:

The one on the left (Texaco building) is being turned into luxury apartments, they should be finished by 2015.

More vacant buildings in downtown Houston are currently being restored/redeveloped, but I'll post them later on. There's still a few more abandoned/vacant buildings as well.

That's absolutely insane! Surely they could've found an empty parking lot to build their glass damn box over! I'm pretty sure they're a bit more plentiful there than pre-WWII skyscrapers...
Shame on Houston for allowing this. This equals the creation of just one more downtown surface parking lot in my mind...

The replacement is far more beautiful than the old one ever was.

It was a piece of junk...

Yeah "Ugly" because you know any GOOD building would still look like a shining beacon after a decade of neglect and being abandoned…
Are you just trying to pic a fight with Traditionalists or what?

I'm saying that it was not a good building to begin with, and terrible compared to most other buildings from its era, and that the replacement is far better.

It's below average even without the hideous staircase they added later.

Don't accuse me of starting fights with anyone when every second comment of yours bashes modern buildings.
