City of Vancouver shows just how bush league it is - MMA Expo canceled

By Chris Parry 28 Mar 2010

The province of British Columbia has spent about $800m building a world class convention centre to attract the corporations, tourists and business travelers of the world, but the knuckleheads at Vancouver City Hall have just pushed away an event that would have attracted around 10,000 people to the PNE forum when they told Gerry Chopik that his MMA Expo would not be welcome at the criminally underused venue if he opted to feature Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu demonstrations, exhibition grappling and MMA competitor assessments.

These are all, of course, completely legal sporting activities in Vancouver - or anywhere else - because they're done on an amateur basis. But the Ray Louie-directed PNE signed a deal with Chopik to host his show, only to turn around a day later and tell him that he wouldn't be allowed to stage anything but product booths at the event.

Chopik, rightly, told them to go to hell and pulled down the shutter on an event that would have brought companies from across North America, celebrities from across the world, and visitors from all over the west coast.

Back to Toronto goes the Expo, and MMA enthusiasts in this city continue to be told by their elected leaders that they're gang members who can't be trusted to watch a demonstration of martial arts.

If the city doesn't push through on April 6th and finally allow the Vancouver Athletic Commission to regulate the sport they said months ago they welcomed, the UFC will shift it's planned June 12 GM Place show to Calgary a week later, and Vancouver will never see the millions of dollars that follow a UFC event, nor the associated industries of gyms, promoters, trainers, fighters, and associated equipment trying so darn hard to set up shop here.

If Ray Louie has such a hate on for MMA that he'll turn away millions of dollars, a taxpaying industry, and a freaking international convention rather than offend his tender sensibilities, he needs to be put in his place NOW by Mayor Gregor Robertson or a very motivated MMA fanbase will turn out in numbers to toss these bureaucratic bunglers aside.

Mark my words, if UFC 115 goes to Calgary and Vancouver is left looking like an international embarrassment, Vision Vancouver won't just have irate voters to contend with, they'll have an international reputation, built so high by the Olympics, quickly turn to crap.

This really doesnt surprise me...Vancouver has to keep its reputation of being a "sober city"...!!!

There is nothing but good things that can come from holding events like this. Lots of money from events = good! lol

I'm probably the only one on here, but I agree with it. I think at least some MMA fans are scumbags, since I used to be in the trades, and most of the people I knew that were fans were illiterate white trash drug addicts with big violent dogs from south of the Fraser that bragged about setting cars on fire to collect the insurance money and complained their grow ops were discovered.

There are scumbag fans in every sport.

I dont think that is a good enough reason for it being cancelled.....

I agree. I don't think that's a good enough reason for the event to be cancelled. If that was the case, you could argue that hockey has their share of 'scumbags' (ie Cooke), but the sport is ever so popular.

Gambling has just as much if not more of a stigma attached to it (crime, social issues stemming from gambling addiction), yet we're apparently building a giant casino downtown. I'm a fan of neither MMA nor gambling but all the same regret such lost opportunities. I simply can't understand council's reluctance on this matter.

I would love for council to explain why they would allow a giant casino built right next to a renovated BC Place, and not allow UFC into Vancouver? These people who make these decisions - they really shouldn't be in leadership. Vancouver becomes more and more known for blowing giant sized opportunities. When is it ever going to change?

Well to be fair if it was up to this council I don't think the casino wouldn't be approved either, but appears to be out of their scope at this point.

Do we still have the reputation of not being able to "handle" these events? Vision, our parents, are still keeping us grounded despite being on relatively GOOD BEHAVIOR!

What do we have to do to get out of our rooms?! Other than not rioting when the Canucks lose the Stanley Cup.

Not surprised. It doesn't fit in with the happy jolly moonbeam philosophy of life.

SOMEBODY think of the children!

It is just simply not acceptable that Gregor's subjects shall be forced to view such events. He always knows what's best for us!

Time to show Raymond Louie some MMA up close and personal.

The No Fun City strikes back!

Statement from No Fun City: "Take that, suckers! After the Olympics, you thought I was down, but you were so wrong, bitches! I'm back! You can't keep me down. Choke on it, you fun-loving chumps!"

It's been Raymond Louie who's been going against UFC, not Gregor.

Be that as it may, one of them is actually the mayor.
